The tofu shop, when the selection is there (you have to go at the right time, as they rotate the dishes throughout the day) is amazing!
There's not much by the way of decor. However, the place is comfortable if a little dated and retro. It is still run by the same guy who opened it 30 years ago, and the service is really warm. The food is all pre-made and displayed in the bain marie at the counter. Despite the 'pre-prepared' aspect, the food is fresh, cooked to the right degree, and at the right temperature. There are no limp salad leaves, dried out vegetables or overcooked vegetables. The ordering process is very flexible. Essentially you choose a bowl size (s/m/l) and have it filled with your pick of the dishes in the display cabinet.
The offering changes daily, but expect dishes such as Green bean sweet chilli tofu salad, Tomato tofu bake, Ginger tofu Asian broth, Baked pumpkin, Broccoli tempeh & black chickpea, Beetroot salad, Satay potato curry, White bean pot w spinach, tomato & paprika.
On the side, you have options of brown rice and condiments, such as soy dip, yoghurt dip, chilli and pickled ginger slithers.
It's really healthy and delicious food, at a good price point.
I have been going to the Tofu Shop for years. The food is quick, good and the staff are generally friendly. The food is healthy and delicious.
They have a good range of food on offer with choices of hot and cold dishes, they had dahl, beans, mixed stir fried veg, pumpkin dish and fennel oh and the very tasty fried tofu. I also noticed rocket lettuce and you get to choose from a variety of sauces such as peanut satay. You can also get falafel made up. dishes of course vary seasonally. The place is really small and tends to get rather crowded. Prices range from $10.00 for a small meal, $16.00 for medium and about $23.00 for the large. I had the medium and was sufficiently full. I think they offer value for money. they also have their own versions of healthy desserts such as apple crumble. I felt that the food - apart from the yummy tofu rather lacked flavour. I would go back but not regularly. they must be doing something right though as they are always busy. The owner is a strange man with some extreme views and he can be rather rude

This was an exceptional experience. This is a tiny little cafe style restaurant. Inside there are no tables, only benches. You order either a small, medium or large plate. All are reasonably priced. My friend and I both had the Medium plate which was $16 each. There are about 15 (maybe more) dishes you can choose from and they literally pile the food onto your plate. The flavour is amazing. They cator to people with food intolerances and clearly list the allergens on the menu cards. I would highly recommend this place to vegetarians or anyone who can step outside the box when it comes to food. You will love it.

another great vegetarian restaurant. a must if in melbourne and you are veg. everything is tasty. have not been disappointed yet!
Approximate cost: $15
Vegetarian meals and for myself as a meat eater I loved it. No lack of choices of flavour. Pick and mix between different dishes or grab a souvlaki and dig in. Will visit again for sure!
Approximate cost: $10
After having eaten at many vegetarian places in Melbourne, I'd have to rate this as the lowest.
We have only been there once, but that was enough to put us off going again. The food was expensive, the small serves definitely not worth the cost and the staff were bordering on rude. Perhaps they were having a bad day, but that doesn't make up for the overpriced food. First impressions count in the food industry.
Honestly, there are much better places for vegans/vegetarians to go to where they will get great food, friendly service and value for money.
Sorry, I call 'em as I see 'em.
You can choose from a range of dishes and have as many as you like in your meal. I get take away meals for lunch but you can eat in the store if you want.
The manager of the Tofu Shop is known for being exceptionally rude to vegans. He is an absolute nut job and I know many vegans and vegetarians who won't eat here because they are terrified of him. Do NOT ask which of the items on the menu are vegan because that will set him off on a giant rant fest about the war in Iraq. Seriously, skip it. Also really overpriced for tiny servings.
yes he is a strange man and I've experienced his rudeness, I wouldnt like to work for him.
The Tofu Shop is a Richmond institution and for good reason. I think even someone who doesn't get excited at the thought of vegetarian cuisine would be won over by the selection of delicious fresh vegetable dishes each with interesting flavors and textures. Included in the price are various dips and condiments. They also have really interesting wraps, which are made fresh and filled with salads, dips, condiments and if you like, various patties. Years ago they used to make the flat bread fresh on a griddle as well, but unfortunately those days are over! Seating is limited and counter style, prices are fair, and the staff are friendly and a bit alternative.
Excellent vegetarian counter-service cafe with a focus, as the name suggests, on tofu. A wide range of dishes are available, changing daily, with plenty of free extras like dips and olives available too.
