The first time I've eaten Vietnamese & was a pleasant experience. Plenty of variety on the menu & also a choice of 3 banquets if with a group. We decided to order 4 different dishes between us & share as well as a fried rice. The caramelised pork & duck stir fry were the highlights. Between 4 adults this was plenty. The waitress was very friendly & service was not bad. I have nothing to compare Vietnamese to however it seemed very similiar to Chinese to me. Overall a good experience.

I found the menu to be extensive. Many vegetarian options. The service was very good, the waitresses were very friendly and helpful. I LOVED the food. The servings were great value for money and wonderful fresh ingredients. The Crispy pancake was great and sooooo big it could have been a main. I then noticed others getting one to share. I will be going back

My only complaint is that my meal came out about 6 -7 mins later than than my friends and her main meal was only a salad.

Approximate cost: $16

My friend had been raving about this place so finally I went for lunch there on a Sunday. The menu is huge. Too difficult to choose from really. Service was a bit slack, food was avergae however on the upside it didn't cost a fortune.

We've been going to Viet King when it was first based on King St Newtown, so it was a surprise when it resurfaced in Newcastle! Unpretentious dining that's as close as authentic Vietnamese that you will get in Newcastle. Unlike the other two Vietnamese restaurants in the vicinity, they actually serve green papaya salad and rice paper rolls; always a personal favourite. Other highlights include the duck banana leaf salad and the caramelised pork (oh so tender!). I am surprised about another review suggested that they served uncooked chicken, but in all the years I have eaten at this restaurant, the food has been fairly spot on (and no food poisoning!) - not your fine dining experience, but if you're looking for good honest, authentic Vietnamese food that's good on the wallet, then this is the place. A great addition to the Darby street precinct!

I booked Vietking with hope of enjoying a good Vietnamese meal. I went with a group of friends who regularly enjoy eating together. The physical surroundings are pleasant- a lot of work obviously went into the design and the ambiance. However, the service and the food were a let down. The worst part of the evening was receiving a chicken dish that was still obviously raw, and then trying to communicate this to the young staff, who were unable to understand us. We were polite, but insistant that it was unsafe to eat raw chicken. After this incident, the staff stayed well away from us all night, didn't offer any more water, and didn't offer anything else from the menu. We even had trouble attracting their attention when we wanted to pay the bill. In terms of meal quality, the soft shelled crab was good, but the other dishes suffered from all tasting the same. I feel that Vietking has potential, but needs some work in the service area, as well as ensuring that basic food preparation hygiene is attended to,.

That is just crazy,we ate there and were so impressed with the standard of the food, the service AND the ambiance, that we now eat there regularly. The ingredients are fresh, and each dish was unique, with amazing flavours that just blew us away. Additionally, I am pregnant, and would not eat there if I doubted in any way their hygiene or food prep standards.

We have had many meals here and we think the food is fabulous - maybe the service is not always great but it is always good enough - love the food and have always enjoyed the time spent ther - favoourite is the steamboat, partnet goes regularly for the pho!!

Have been for lunch and dinner several times now. Food is fabulous - soft shell crab with lemongrass & chili... yummmmm!! Pho for a late breakfast made me feel like I was in Vietnam again. The service has been variable - from excellent to a little slow but seems like some of the staff lack experience and this will only improve with time. Gaining popularity so make sure you book on the weekends.
