One of my go to places in Melbourne for Thai restaurants since my uni days. Their crispy skin pork and fillet fish with chilli are my favourites.

First time I came to ying thai when I was met my wife. This place is good for green curry and the pad sie ew. Overall the food is perfect but some dishes bit over price for me but for my wife she said the price is still reasonable. Every time we going to melb always have a lunch and long queue.

Approximate cost: $15

Wait a bit for the food but overall the food is good. Better than most other Thai restaurant. I had the tom yum soup (prawn), their Thai ice tea, Pork skin, pad tai, and also the green curry chicken.
Tom yum is a must. Their "mild" spicy is really spicy for most people. So, make sure you tell them exactly how spicy you want it to be.

While a long time diner of this establishment, a recent visit for dinner on a weekday to the same crowded place with food that on retrospect, really isn't that much of value for money - although average on Lygon St and the service was poor with unhappy waiters/waitresses. We had the green curry, fried flounder and minced pork and it was acceptable although turnaround from trying to find a waiter to order to food arriving approximately 30 mins. In short - understaffed, overhyped, disappointing.

Killiney Kopitiam just two stores down on the other hand...is a whole different story much more deserving of business!

Approximate cost: $15

I agree its not a very good thai restaurant. My suggestion is go to chang mai thai restaurant in lygon street....

Personally I love thai cusine and this place is very average.

I had a mixed entree which was admittedly nice, but from what I observed of the meals from the other diners sitting nearby, the meals were not that appealing.

Sure it was packed during a weekday lunch hour, so it must be poopular with some.

Service was fast in getting my order, which was good as I had limited time to eat and run.

Whilst their food is really good don't expect to get what you see in the photos. We'order Chicken curry which had rice with it on the menu and when we got it home there was no rice. When we went back we were told we had to order rice separately. Should not they have told us that to begin with. I asked to speak to the manager but was told he was too busy to speak to me.

Approximate cost: $15

If you had to choose between Ying Thai in Abbotsford and Ying Thai 2 in Carlton - I would have to say #2! Regular diners in Carlton would not be happy with me stating this but I personally think the atmosphere and the food is slightly better.

If you are walking along Lygon Street, passing the waiter/esses trying to convince you to try their restaurant - ignore them. I think if it was a great place to eat, you wouldn't need people outside to attract customers. Although if this a a traditional thing, I can accept it as a bit of fun and conversing with them as you walk past.

Ying Thai 2 is one of the busiest restaurants (if it is open) on the street and for good reason. The food will speak for itself and it's always nice to pop next door for some award-winning gelati for dessert.

Highly recommended, great food, great price and unpretentious.
