On November 30th we took our beloved male cat to Hanly vet to be sterilised and we got a phone call in the morning to say there had been complications and he was having trouble breathing. we drove there and the vet then said he was stable and only allowed us to see him from afar in an oxygen box. We really wanted to come close so he could see us but were told we could excite him and were not allowed to do so. We were not advised that he could get worse, instead the vet spoke of the future when he said we could pick him up tomorrow so we calmed down and drove home. Very shortly after we ring them and are told he had died. We were in shock and rushed back to find our boy lying dead on the table.
Our question is why did the vet not warn us that he could get worse, we would've stayed so at least he could have seen us before he died and the fact he died alone has turned our life upside down. My mum can't do anything and cries everyday over the way that he died. He was only young at 10 months.
Vets should offer to do pretests for potential underlying conditions that could cause reactions to anaesthetic, if we had been offered one to check our boy we definitely would have done so.
In the end our darling young boy is in his grave and we don't know how to get back to our normal lives after such a huge loss!
We've lost the happiness in our lives and we always thought he'd live a long life with us.
