Poor communication, failed to follow through, concerns about nursing

On the one hand, I believe that, 'big picture', the vets here accurately diagnosed and treated my dog. On the other, I was repeatedly told I would receive updates and test results by phone that never eventuated and spent hours by the phone or having to call of my own volition to find out if my dog was okay. I understand this is an emergency care clinic and that things happen. I also recognise vets are incredibly overworked and there is a lot going on. But the entire time my dog was in hospital, I was constantly told I would be rung, or rung back, at a certain time and it simply never happened. On top of this, I received incredibly confusing and contradictory information about test results from different practitioners and had to chase and chase to follow up results. There was clearly poor handover or communication between different staff. My dog also developed symptoms and side effects I was not told about which ended up being unimportant but which freaked me out when I visited him, especially since information had been so scarce and hard to access. My dog was also covered in urine when I went there and had apparently been whining to get access to toilet and become upset, all of which I only discovered as I was literally there and saw him soaked in urine. Although my dog was mobile and should have had toilet breaks or been cleaned up, I understand these things can happen when an animal is anxious or if there is another emergency that has to take priority. But the lack of care to update the owner and explain things added greatly to my fear and stress during an enormously difficult time. If you don't have to call owners, ever, that's fine, but please don't make promises you will and then repeatedly fail to follow through. It makes us fear the worst.
