Foxy’s saga

We have been under the care of the internal med team at ARH since an emergency visit 8 months ago for our 8 year old greyhound. What appeared to be laboured breathing late on a Sunday evening was not the bloat we thought it might be, but instead the symptom of a catastrophic clot in her spleen.

We had to call in Dr Tim for specialist treatment and scans on The Sunday night, and eventually after she stabilised had to leave her in hospital with well managed and sensitive expectations that she may not have long.

Bloods showed she had significant Protein Loss in Urine and free fluid in her abdomen due to shunts stemming off her vena cava.

In other words she was incredibly unwell and in significant levels of pain. We spoke with Tim and Daisy continually through the first week, and finally were able to bring her home where she could be more comfortable. Again we were given a fabulous document detailing her care and what to look for to rush her back in for. We made it a week before we rushed her back in as the drugs doing their job meant small pets of the major clot was breaking down, but that meant they were travelling.

Back home, adjustment of pain management and diet. Specialist referral to vet nutritionist because appetite was gone.

Tenterhooks for another 3 weeks, back in for check up and med review… then again in another month and now we’re on 3-4 month check ins! Initially we were talking days, then weeks, then months and now quarters!

Foxy surprised us all and responded really well to medical intervention and diet change. She is now a bright bubbly cat dog greyhound again. Her major clot is all but gone and her bloods are all showing good things.

We were so lucky to have the team involved that we did, their rapid response and interventions have prevent us from having to say goodbye, which would have been the right thing to do if her quality of life and pain were unmanageable.

In thankful for the compassion and obvious care the ARH vet techs, nurses, reception, specialists, etc showed. It’s a high pressure, heavy mental load career choice and they are so very constrained by other humans choices and behaviours.

Thankyou all!

i only found out very late just how badly my dog was treated, and its just a fluke she lived on as long as she did, basically inspite of huge expense and many visits they prescribed and supplied piroxicam fluid but didnt tell me it had short expiry date and almost no life at all if not refridgerated ,but i doubt they even had it refridgerated as it wasnt cold when i picked it up anyway, and last bottle of it they had it there for months by looks of it yet didnt inform till almost expired so had to know what i using expired even if was refridgerated so basically it looks like rather then getting medication my dog was unbeknown to me getting worse then nothing ,ive since learned the fluid form is rarely used by anyone and some chemists i talked to didnt even know it exists. i say a fluke she lived so long because there was a delay in them getting it but had it came quick id say she'd of died over two years earlier..extremely careless of them because i went out there a number of times complaining of medication effects but they just told me to cut dose a bit or stop using a few days.cost was over $30000way over i think

Approximate cost: $35000

Whether you have pet insurance or not the level of care here is very poor. Don't expect empathy or compassion you won't find it. In a nutshell, go elsewhere.
This facility is not what it use to be, it has gone downhill very quick in a period of a few years. Do not let the excuse of COVID FOOL you due to their lack of humanity.
Perhaps the CEO needs to increase the Staff pay, instead of their own backpocket. That way,, at least you would get a mediocre service at best as appose to a very poor service.
Utterly Dissapointing !

Do not ever go to the opthamologist Matt Annear here! If I could leave no stars, I would! My cat has had Eosinophilic Keratitis since January. After my first consultation, Matt gave me 3 eyedrops to give her which made no difference at all. Matt advised the next option was surgery to remove the plaque in her eye to speed up the healing process but advised there is only a 50% chance this could work. After surgery, the plaque started to return after a week. At my post op appointment 2 weeks after surgery, Matt broke the news that my cat now has cancer in her eye and needs to go for surgery again only 2 weeks after her initial operation. I was extremely upset as I had just pulled out a loan to pay for the first surgery and knew I may not be able to open a second loan to remove the cancer from her eye before it started to spread. I thought it was about time I get a second opinion. On Monday, the 12th of April, I went to another opthamologist who pulled up all of my cat's records from ARH. Matt had never made note of having found cancer in my cats eye and they confirmed she does not have cancer. After just 3 days of using the eyedrops they supplied, my cats eye no longer has any more plaque, she is no longer squinting and no longer has a cloudy film over her eye. Her eye is almost as clear as her good eye in just 3 days! Fifi didn't even need to go through surgery the first time!!! Her eyedrops just needed to be changed up! They are money hungry people who do not care about your pets!! The receptionists have always been rude every time I've been there. Matt is a charlatan! He never explained anything properly, he always gave me uncertain answers, he never treated my cat in front of me so I have no idea what was being done or how she was being handled or if anything was being done at all for every $300 consultation I paid for!

I took a family pet there many years ago. An expensive x Ray plus all the vets combined there couldn't come up with a diagnosis. Dr David advised me that he would come good but never be the same again. I had to have my pet put down 2 days later by my local vet. All I got out of this was dr David telling us how good he was!

Responsive service for our cat, who was gagging and coughing. Staff could not have been clearer about possible tests and causes, and the costs, while high, were clearly explained upfront. Dr Natalie Watson was fantastic, even following up after our cat had been discharged, and on her day off.
Our cat is well, thanks to ARH. Thanks also to Kane in Admin who was very helpful.

Approximate cost: $3000

Would not recommend this vet at all. Unfriendly staff and lack of empathy and professionalism. We bought our dog in who had surgery for cancer - did not give us any updates during procedure. We were waiting on test results to determine the extremity of the cancer. No call or followup - I called 3 days after I was meant to hear about results only to learn that they had gotten the results at the beginning of the week. No compassion or empathy when telling me that the cancer was aggressive or apology for not getting in touch. We spent 10k getting surgery and doing tests. All they care about is money. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND for your fur baby.

A dangerous place for your pet.

I brought my cat in last week as she hadn't eaten all day and was looking ill, but was still alert and herself. She spent about 48hrs at ARH Homebush and returned to me in a state of collapse, incoherence and was brain dead. At no stage did anyone at the ARH advise me of her deteriorating condition, and instead continued to charge me well in excess of $4000 for treatment that somehow led her to become catatonic. I had no choice but to put her down. I have raised an urgent issue with them and I still haven't heard anything. I do not trust this place and it's staff, and I urge you to not bring your pet here, and certainly don't leave them there overnight.

Approximate cost: $5000

We had an issue which has been resolved to the satisfaction of both parties.
