My last 3 pets have ended their lives at ARH Homebush.

Most recently, my very young pup was euthanized as they were unable to control her seizures (which only began after they started treating her).

After a lot of money spent on tests, they were unable to diagnose the problem and told me the most humane action was to put the pup to sleep.

2 months later they call me late at night to ask what I wanted done with my pup's remains. Apparently, they had lost records of my wishes and had kept her on ice for 2 months.

The caller offered a casual apology for the error.

ARH have not managed to save any of my pets but they certainly have managed to charge me many thousands of dollars.

If ever I need to services of a late night vet again, I will be searching for options further afield.

I took my beloved little pet ferret Lupe into ARH who had been attacked by a dog and was dying.
Despite her critical condition I was forced to wait for 23 minutes while healthy animals were seen first.
When I finally saw a vet I asked them to operate because Lupe’s stomach was bulging and she was struggling to breathe.
ARH said they would perform surgery.
The next morning I found out they didn’t operate and instead simply left Lupe in oxygen. When Lupe was sent back to my vet, they told me her condition was now so dire that they recommended euthanising.
Instead, I went through with surgery to try to save her life. She survived, and it was discovered she had a punctured gut.
The problem from here because ARH had let her gut contents to spill into her belly for 15 hours with no surgical intervention.
So further surgeries were required to try and clean out her insides, and she died after the third surgery.
I sent a complaint to ARH about her treatment which was ignored and subsequently lost. After 9 days I followed up and they rushed a response back to me a few hours later which was full of inaccuracies and assumptions. They made no attempt to consult me on anything. On the 22nd of December, I sent a response and despite numerous efforts to get a reply I have been ignored by ARH staff who have yet to acknowledge receipt of the complaint.
ARH treated my pet, and now me as nothing but a number and I have seen no care from any staff member.

My Dog was seriously ill after delayed treatment by a negligent kennel. Once I got him to the Animal Referral Hospital, the level of care was exceptional.

Unfortunately it was not possible to save my dog's life due to the kennels delay in getting treatment, but the ARH did all they could to save him, and the team of vets kept me regularly updated on his condition.

A special thanks to the wonderful reception staff, so kind, caring and helpful during a very difficult time.

Our dog daisy was bitten by a snake and then ended up with complications requiring emergency surgery. The team at ARH in particular Dr Jody Braddock were amazing and caring to say the least. They kept me up to date on her condition throughout and allowed us to sit with her in the ICU while she was waiting for surgery. Having experienced another of Sydney's big animal hospitals where we had a completely opposite experience, I wouldn't hesitate to take any of my animals to ARH or recommend them to others.

Somewhat ambivalent about this hospital but gene rally feel that it was not especially good value for money, the treatment being for a cat which required an XRay and Ulrasound and a 4 night stay for over $1000.
Firstly I was told to take the cat home after megacolon had been diagnosed but on my insistence it was kept overnight "for observation"What was there to observe? It had already been constipated for nigh on 5 days. Why not immediate treatment ?It was then considered to keep it in until the constipation was relieved by medication which occurred some 4 days later!!Medication was arranged to take home.Thankyou.
Secondly the degree of difficulty in securing followup services with the diagnosing and prescribing vet proved very timeconsuming and the written takehome details did not clearly prepare me for changes needed to cope with overreaction to the medication.Yes we know each animal is different.
I commend the hospital for the politeness of all staff encountered. What I saw of the premises was clean and wellpresented. This is just what we would expect.

.What I would like from a hospital of this type which clearly has a monopoly of services is to see better facetoface communication and clearer information about what to expect
in the recovery period.Specialist vets have the advantage of experience and training to anticipate the needs of poststay care and we rely on them to do that.I am now trying to sort out with the referring vet just what I need to be doing for the immediate future.

Very unprofessional. Don't go there. Without asking for my consent a vet performed unnecessary invasive tests on my poor kitten and ultimately wanted to leave the kitten for another two days despite saying that he was well. Once I saw the bill I pointed out that I was not advised and asked for consent on these tests. I wanted to discuss the nessesity of these tests with the vet or any other vet. But the hospital refused to discuss it. They printed a new invoice without these tests and literally threw me with my kitten out. My main concern are not the costs associated with it but unnessesary invasive and painful procedures performed on my kitten. Apparently personal inconvenience of the vet ("..would finish at midnight if you come..") was the reason behind the desire to keep my kitten in the hospital for another two days. The style of her communication is a monologue where you have no chance to say a word. She doesn't give you any options and then accuses you that you didn't tell her that you were disagree (yes she attempts some communication once you complained on her).

Approximate cost: $1000

Our little dog Jasper became very ill after being bitten by something (possibly a tick) one evening just before Christmas 2014. He went outside to the garden and came back in paralysed in his back legs. Our vet was closed and so we were referred to the wonderful people at Animal Referral Hospital. From the very first they were amazing. Kind, caring people who made a terrible day easier. Long story short, they kept him there over the Christmas period and saved him. I will never forget their kindness and compassion, I was a mess and we had only had him for 4 months when this happened. Wonderful people.

Hi Karen, thank you for reviewing us. The many experienced and wonderful staff that work nights, weekends and public holidays are the true heroes and I'm blessed to work with some incredible people. I'm glad to hear Jasper made a full recovery and I hope the coming Christmas is kinder this year! Warm regards, Troy James

Ps - I will pass on your review to the Emergency staff

I visited ARH back in 2011 because my quaker parrot suddenly fell ill and it was on a Sunday and we knew a lot of Vet Clinics would not be opened. We were recommended by someone to take our bird to ARH because of how they are open 24 hours. Long story short, my quaker parrot is still with me today, all thanks to Dr Stacy who was the Exotics Vet at the time. He was so compassionate and he made sure to do everything he could to find the source of my bird's problem. I even rang at midnight once because I wanted to know of my bird's status and a lovely Vet Nurse kindly told me how he was going and was very polite and well spoken. I was also sad to find out that Stacy went to Melbourne, but I will still be coming to you guys if anything ever happens again.

Hi Kristina, thank you for the kind words. We love to hear stories like yours and I'm glad to hear that your parrot has and is doing so well. The ARH was sad to lose Stacey to Melbourne although we now have the lovely Dr Jayne Weller (Avian and Exotics). Ps I'll be sure to pass on your review to the nurses. Warm regards, Troy James (General Manager)

Like so many others, we were referred to ARH by our local Vet. Our little Poodle became very ill, very quickly. We were so scared that we were going to lose her. From the minute we walked into the hospital we were amazed at how compassionate, caring and understanding everyone was. The Doctors and nurses were amazing. They were professional and it was obvious that they knew what they were doing. I would not hesitate for one second to recommend ARH to anyone with a Pet. Lucy is doing well and is back home, thank you everyone at ARH.

Hi Julie, thank you so much for the kind feedback and its great to hear that Lucy is doing so well. I'll make sure your review is sent to those involved in Lucy’s care as our staff always love to hear about the happy endings.

Warm regards, Troy James (ARHGM)

I took my very sick cat in on Monday night, fearing the worst. He already has lung cancer and asthma, and I was afraid that I was going to lose him. He was very lethargic, drinking a lot of water, and had just thrown up.

An hour after admitting him, not long after I got home, they called me to tell me that it looked like he had pancreatitis, and asked if it was okay to book him in for an ultrasound the next day. I agreed. The next evening we were told that the ultrasound confirmed that he had acute pancreatitis, and he also had high blood sugar levels. The specialist informed us that he was hoping to keep my cat off insulin, as he'd had some success in lowering his blood sugar levels when he was on a drip. When we went in to see our cat that night, the improvement in him was remarkable. In 24 hours he'd gone from being a very sick, very unhappy cat to a very affectionate, very happy cat. I honestly felt as though I'd just been given my cat back.

The next day we learned that his blood sugar levels were becoming uncontrollable again, so he'd had to be started on insulin. I was a bit alarmed when I saw that he was in the cat ICU, until they explained to me that they'd moved him in there because it would be quieter and more comfortable for him, not because he actually needed to be in there.

Every time I went in and saw him, he was clearly happy and content, and was being looked after so well. It's Saturday now, and I just went in and had a member of the nursing staff teach me how to give him insulin. There is hope that he will not be diabetic forever, just for a while, as the diabetes has emerged as a result of the pancreatitis, but only time will tell. He will hopefully be coming home today.

It is a relief to know that such an incredible facility exists such as this hospital. Yes, it is a bit expensive. But you have access to ultrasound, MRI, Ct-scans, and x-ray imaging. They can do blood tests in-house. If you need a specialist, no matter what for, they have them there. They are open 24/7, and your pet receives around-the-clock care. And they always go that one step further. Even in the little things- for instance, when my cat had his CT-scans done there, they did a culture off the scope used for the aneasthesia scope, and discovered that he also had an e.coli infection in his lungs. My cat is alive and healthy because of ARH. And if you are concerned about the cost, there is always VetPay to assist with the payment.

So if you have a very sick animal, or an emergency, or it is outside of vet hours, I highly recommend taking your animal in to ARH. Because I can't fault any of them- from the reception staff, to the vet nurses, to the vets, interns, and specialists. I am convinced that the only reason my cat is alive and happy inspite of his multiple conditions is because of ARH. And Dr. Angles in particular has been so good in making my boy well again.
