Professional and empathetic

From the time my 97 year old mum entered Austin Emergency til she left she was treated with great professional and care. The doctor, nurse in charge, other nurses and Care coordinator were so kind to mum and our her at ease. The pharmacist on duty Sunday 3/12/23 went above and beyond to help mum get her correct meds.

I am an older person who had a fall last Saturday (16/4) occasioning a head wound. I like to express my sincere gratitude for the kindness and very thorough help I received from all concerned: the 4 members of the public, the 2 Ambulance Men, the various Nurses, the Care Coordinator and Doctors. I stayed at the Austin for about 8 hours and was kept regularly informed about the next step, was monitored and given check-ups. Truly I feel very fortunate to have been taken to the Austin and it's very caring and professional staff. Thank you so much to all of you. Christa

My 93 year old grandmother was admitted to the Austin on the weekend after she had a fall. The ER staff were very friendly and supportive in attending to her needs and helping to take care of her while she was disorientated and in pain. The nursing team in Ward 7 West have additionally been able to relate to my grandmother really well and have made her feel comfortable and are very competent in relating to the elderly with their clear loud speaking and understanding of her needs. One of the nurses, John, has been particularly kind and my grandmother really likes him - he is able to talk with her about her dutch heritage which has helped to make her feel extra relaxed and comfortable.

On my visit to the Austin, I was given very prompt and friendly treatment by the medical staff. I believe that the service may fluctuate depending on the time of your visit - as it is a hospital. However, generally the staff were very nice and kept me informed at all times, regardless of how busy they were.

To sum up:
1. Waited about five hours at the Austin Hospital Emergency Department/Unit
2.There was no meaningful communication on the part of key members of staff.
In particular there was very poor efforts at communication from one key member of staff
( a physician)
3.Felt that assumptions were made regarding my condition before efforts were made to collect evidence.
4.There were two staff members who interacted with me and were quite pleasant and competent this included the physician I did end up seeing for 5-10mins. This is virtually the only reason I have rated the service.
4. I witnessed an incident where one very frail and elderly lady in a wheel chair, was (in my opinion) berated by a staff member after having complained about the waiting time. Felt that the staff member could have handled that particular patient's concerns by communicating in a professional manner rather than reacting and divulging that patient's medical condition (to a full waiting room) in the process.
5. Other people in the waiting room were leaving or talking off leaving because they couldn't endure the wait.
