It's an ok place for the location. I mean what is there really to look for in a pub other than atmosphere and drinks?
There was plenty of both, but it just seemed to be missing something that would give it 5 stars

Decent pub! This place is pretty popular with uni students due to the drink specials. Drinks are fairly cheap and this place has a good atmosphere.

Yeah, it's not that I'm not a patient person, but when you have to wait a good hour before you get your food, it's a bit too long in the tooth. Food quality and drinks are good though, so that's no issue.

As a university student, I come to the Austral for the primary reason of: cheap, affordable drinks. I've been here many times to meet friends for drinks but have never actually eaten here. I love the environment, Lots of young people like me sitting around with their friends enjoying a drink. I particularly enjoy the atmosphere when there's live music as the performers are always great!

There's just nothing special about the Austral's food.

There are so many great places on Rundle street, where things are cheaper or better.

It's not terrible but it's just not standout.

But the Austral is a nice place for a beer or five, sitting in the alfresco outdoor area. Lots of people congregate there when it's warm. A nice experience, especially because you're more likely to get a table there than at other places on the street!

We went to a 30th birthday party here last night. A private room was booked on the first floor. The room itself wasnt that large, but it included a balcony with tables and chairs, overlooking Rundle Street. This made it a lot more spacious, as it was a pleasant evening, and most people were out on the balcony. It was very entertaining and colourful watching the activity of Rundle Street from this private balcony area.
A private bar with barman was setup in a corner of the room, for guests only. Also a stereo for music.
I thought the drinks were very expensive, but my kids, who frequent the city haunts a lot more than their father does, assured me that the prices were quite acceptable for such a venue, so there you go!!
The pub itself and main bar area downstairs are very old, as were the staircases and corridors upstairs, but this now makes it very trendy. The front to Rundle street opens out to alfresco tables under large market umbrellas out on the street, and these areas were all packed with patrons. A DJ was setup at the back of the front bar area, so the crowd was mainly young.
The party we attended had finger-food such as chicken wings, mini pizzas, meatballs with dipping sauce etc., I assume supplied by the hotel, and it was good quality and tasty.
A great venue for this sort of event, we are older than the usual crowd, I would guess, but we still enjoyed ourselves very much.

A nice place to hang out and have a drink with your friends. The food here is quite average. It doesn't look as "posh" and well decorated as your typical restaurant but it certainly is a great place to chill and relax.

Approximate cost: $15

This is a great pub. Often have live acts, quite trendy, friendly staff and good pub meals. Saw a couple of fringe acts here which were great.

A Monday lunch with friends where we needed to be able to talk. The indoor dining area (The Bunker) was perfect. We purchased meals via the bar so there were no problems with splitting bills; there was no loud music and the service was really efficient with very pleasant staff. Food quality was great - fish excellent. They don't serve tea/coffee as their main clientele (night time) don't want it. This doesn't create a problem as Rundle Street East has plenty of coffee places a few minutes away from the Austral. This was a great lunch venue with food quality that restores your faith in Adelaide restaurants being able to serve good quality food in price ranges below the 5 star venues.

Approximate cost: $25

The austral has great drink deals for a Saturday night- especially beer and cider lovers! the dance floor is rather small, however, still a great place to start a night out
