30 reviews about Backyard Chicken Coops

Ordered a 48m poultry fence on line and a 24m fence arrived a week later. When I call them to enquire I was then informed an additional fence would be sent. 2 weeks later it hadn't arrived. When I called again I was informed it hadn't been dispatched. They have now advised it will now be sent soon. Not a good experience so far, and only half a fence!

You know the legal term "unmerchantable quality"?
It basically means that a product is simply not good enough to be sold... it cant do what it is supposed to do.
The roof leaks
The nest box leaks
The catches rusted at once
The rain gets in the window
It twists when you try to move it and you have to try and get it aligned again
It is designed in Australia and made in China
I think these coops are "unmerchantable quality" and if enough customers complained to their retailer, and gave them enough grief, they might stop importing, selling and make a fortune on cheap chinese products.

Phew......I was just about to order a Mansion and the Mansion extended run....well over $2500 until I found this page of course. Ive purchased a few runs all made in China and you seem to get what you pay for. So to say I was completely sucked in by their web page is an understatement. Obviously wont be buying from them after reading the reviews here. I think I will have a go at making one myself.

Are these people serious? Imported rubbish that's no better than you get from eBay but costs ten times more. I can't believe they aren't on a current affair for selling their rubbish coops. Buyer beware! I'm glad I got the smaller, cheaper coop first, and didn't buy the mansion straight off. Money back guarantee? Yeah right.

Has anyone managed to get their money back I wonder ?

I bought the Taj Mahal because I liked the look of it.
However my chickens do not hold the same view. They HATE it & will not go in it. I have just checked with someone I see has the same coop advertised for sale & they had the same problem. Maybe some chickens are different, particularly if they are put into it when they are little.
I did find it quite easy to assemble, though one roof slat was cracked & another bit chipped, when it arrived. The ladder bits are also too flimsy & have cracked across the screws within a few days of assembly.
I will be interested to see how it weathers, particularly the sliding doors, which I suspect will warp.

The Penthouse: Creative design, but it really is a waste of money. So over-priced and only lasts 3 months. I never received the opener for the internal door - I was told to look harder in the wrapping...... It was NOT there. But I wasn't believed and they did nothing about it. It
is a very large key. If it's not there, it's not there! I didn't receive the swing in the order either but it came after I rang. Within 3 months, the back door had warped as it is not braced, and so the timber slats had moved apart. It is now loose and will not shut without effort as the screws for the hinges have come out because the timber has started to rot where the door frame is. The chimney area leaks even in light rain. The window slider has deteriorated, the handle on the window has cracked off, and the window won't slide because the masonite has swollen & cracked. I rang to tell them of these design faults and they wanted me to send photos or a video of closing the door. They suggested I put a hose on the roof so they could see where the water is dripping down in the video I was to send them. You've got to be joking?!! Bad design of the back door - it needed to be braced and not enough sealer used to seal the chimney area. Basically cheap timber used throughout. Then I was told that I needed to paint the house once a month to keep it in good order!! This type of upkeep was not mentioned clearly on their website at the time of purchase. This week, pieces of ship-lap timber have fallen off below the back door - they are not nailed on but glued on,and this indicates that the glue is not weather- proof. This is not part of my upkeep ritual of weekly maintenance, but their failure to build correctly so that it lasts. I paid over $1200 and I should not have to complain about an inferior product.
I gave them 1 star to leave this review but they deserve none. I cannot recommend them at all. Fortunately the 3 chooks free-range all day and only go home at night. The tarp over the house solved the water leak but looks terrible. The back door has to be rebuilt & braced at my expense. I hope this review helps others to make an informed decision before purchasing from this company

I wouldn't recommend at all. The Penthouse size is slightly smaller than advertised and it is flimsy. I don't know the type of timber but it doesn't have any strength to it. After unpacking and a careful examination of the parts I found some parts with cracked and splintered timber, one part of which appeared to have been repaired with wood filler. The slight size difference in width (50mm) is only a problem if relying on the advertised size for concrete footings. Instead of sitting in the middle of 100mm wide footings it sits on the inside edge.
I haven't built it yet but my initial feelings are it has been a big mistake.

I have just paid $1000 including freight to Perth for a Gorgeous Penthouse chicken coop. Beautiful to look at, a very practical design chicken coop. But the timber is cheap lightweight Chinese pine, held together by flimsy tacks. I have painted it with three coats of paint to protect it. Already three weeks later hinges are rusting, door is loose. Will it last in the elements for more than 12 months?? Anyones guess. Extremely disappointed with the quality. Would I purchase another one? NO No No!!!
On a more positive note staff were extremely helpful with all my enquires. Shame such a great looking practical design just doesn't have the quality.

Hello, I was seriously thinking about buying the exact same coop you did but having read your review I am now hesitant. I live in East Freo, do you still have the coop and how is it faring? If at all possible, can I visit to inspect your coop? Thanks
Barry

Very excited to see theTaj mahal coop arrive after a longer than stated time frame only to find that one of the roof panels had been split by a misplaced nail or screw on construction causing the loss of a roof panel for us. After sending photos and emailing and calling and emailing again and being assured that somebody from the " Warehouse" would get back to me I have felt impelled to write this review. The coop would have been great and indeed looks good in the yard but would I deal with this company again ? No definitely not

I ordered my coop online as the design looks to be very well thought out (I still think this, by the way). It was a little more expensive than coops of a similar size but seemed sturdier and as though more thought had gone in to it.

I was enormously disappointed, however, by the instructions and the after-sales service. I unpacked everything and was doing quite well until page 2, when it became apparent that there was no way in Hades that the ventilation chimney was going to attach to the panel - a panel which appeared in the illustrations but was not mentioned in the written instructions. After about 4 days I got an answer to my email query admitting that one step of the instructions had been left off and telling me that hundreds of other customers had managed just fine so if I sent a photo, I'd be told what *I* was "doing wrong."

I managed to hold my tongue on the tenor of the email, and send the requested photo. I got a 1-sentence response telling me to "swap and rotate the panels." I sought further clarification on this and asked what was meant by rotate the panels, since the instructions clearly state that the cut out pieces go on the bottom (and God knows, I'd read and re-read them when it all went wrong!) I then got another 1 sentence email admitting that that was the owner's mistake when writing the instructions.

Maybe it's just me, but I reckon that if you market a product as having easy to use clear instructions and being DIY, it probably shouldn't have 2 mistakes in the first two pages that require you to reassess where things might go and do the exact opposite of what the instructions tell you. Apparently the hundreds of other customers understood that by "make sure the cut-outs are at the bottom," what was meant was "make sure the cut-outs are the top." Perhaps they all have a background in carpentry. I don't. But I have constructed many things over the years, by carefully following instructions; ones that were actually right.

The company has also managed to ignore the part of my email where I queried why the discount for liking them on Facebook was not applied at checkout. I also asked in the additional comments of my order if we could try to get delivery to happen on a couple of particular dates when I could work from home. This was unacknowledged and ultimately ignored. Thankfully, the delivery guys dumped it on the verandah rather than taking the boxes back to the depot (which is what the checkout process advises will happen, for the security of your order), or they'd probably still be there.

Beyond disappointed, as I'd hoped to use this company again to extend our flock, maintain the coop with the oil they sell etc/. And I'm now very fearful of what other problems will arise when I take on the Chicken Coop, Round 2, this weekend, and attempt to complete it.

I highly recommend my fellow chicken breeders the coops from these suppliers. They are best I must say. It gives my chicken the security, enough freedom and space. The Mansion is just perfectly designed according to what I wanted for my flock. My hens cluck more now because they got nice home to live in and no predators to get in.
