A stylish french vietnamese eatery focused on small tapas like dishes. The decor is dark and elegant. Excellent value for money feed me menu for $25pp, 2 entrees and 2 main.
Service was disappointing, with staff/owners more consumed with internal discussions and how to work the ordering system on the computer. However, the Konju Varuthadhu (prawns marinated in a spice paste of chilies and onions) were moist and well spiced , and the vegetable samosas similarly well prepared. The Cochin Chicken Fry (described as marinated chicken drumsticks fried with chef's special spice mix) were dry pieces of breast meat fried to arid dryness. The Uzhunnuvada (lentils ground and mixed with salt, green chilly and curry leaves in deep fried in oil served with coconut chutney) were bland and dry. The coconut chutney seemed more like re-hydrated desiccated coconut.
The Chicken Stew (Kerala special chicken prepared with potato, vegetables and coconut milk) was very moist, well spiced and fresh, as was the Kizhangu Curry (a Kerala style potato curry prepared with onion and spices). I am not sure that anyone who has eaten Keralan food in and around Emakulam and Kochi would rush back here. Small but balanced and inexpensive wine list.
Approximate cost: $18
johnnyboy you are obviously not an indian and have no idea about north indian or south indian food! I had actually sent a complaint letter to this particular restaurant after my shocking experience here and till date i haven't received any acknowledgement or apology. On the day we had dinner there we were offered a complimentary mocktail to recompense for the pathetic food and service but that was all ! If you like the food at this place you are welcome to it but to all those Indian food lovers looking for authentic food and moreover good service one piece of advice - STAY AWAY FROM COHIN DURBAR !
another thing Johnnyboy - how do you know if a card is accepted or not at a business. Either if there is signage somewhere or if the person accepting it tells you its not accepted. Now if the person takes my card and swipes it as well - what does that mean? the card is accepted or its not accepted?? You really have no idea. Do you ??!!!
Looks like we have to agree to disagree on this one. I guess that the 17 or so friends that have has the orgasmic delight to sample the food there (some of which are Indian and all well travelled) would likewise disagree with your comments as no doubt will the twenty or so guests that will be dining there in the next few weeks. You see at the end of the day we all vote with our patronage and my vote and that of my friends is out there for all to see so get over it. Johnnyboy
This has to one of the most pathetic restaurants I have been to in Melbourne! I ordered a Masala dosa that was served cold and I was told the Sambhar is 'just coming'. When the 'Sambhar' came it was ice cold! The Chilli Paneer we ordered was cooked in a Chinese soy sauce the Paneer was cooked like Tofu !! Certainly not from Kerala !
We paid using an American Express card and the guy told us the card has declined instead of saying that they don't accept American Express. Overall in one word - PATHETIC !
I think I am qualified to cooment on this critique having been involved with 3 restaurants to date. I have had the food at Cochin Durbar and a number of guests and have always been pleased with the service and food. I had no idea about South Indian food before eating there and now start to scratch at the thought of butter chichen. I am a convert. Finally, it helps to know what cards are accepted before trying to pay.
