I thought they have a fabulous range and variety of fabrics. There's always something to settle for as an alternative even if you can't find a specific match. However, today l bought a remnant for the first time, and when l got into the car l noticed that a huge chunk was cut from the piece l thought l bought and paid for. Basically, it wasn't a full half a meter as tagged on the piece, and wasn't the last piece on the bale. It was a piece from which other chunks were removed, so l couldn't use it for the purpose it was intended for. We turned back and l was hoping to swap it for another piece for the same price. I do understand that the sign says no returns, but l thought that it was a little unfair not to allow me to change it for another scrap piece that was at least solid so l could cut something out of it. The sales lady was a little loud and rude and didn't even give me a chance to explain what l needed. I didn't want a refund. I just wanted a solid small piece. I think another sign should encourage opening the pieces and checking before buying. Now l am so glad that l didn't buy the silk. At least this was only 3 dollars. I still feel a little cheated. I won't go back there. Also, l am going to post this on social media so others will be aware.

Where else can you find a good quality silk for $9.95 a metre? Or Missoni prints for a fraction of the real price? They also have a huge variety of laces, trims, motifs and accessories - all the little things that will make your project special. As the name of the store assumes the prices are more than reasonable. The staff is knowledgable and friendly. Overall, it is my favorite sewing place in Melbourne. The only problem is how to make a choice - it is way too easy to be lost there for a couple of hours:))

I have been a regular shopper at Darn Cheap for about 10 years. It has the most amazing selection of sewing and dress making bits including everyday and dress fabrics, craft and quilting fabric, threads, a huge selection of unusual trims, ribbons, cords, zips, buttons and other little funky features you never knew you needed... it really is the place to stop if you're looking for something a bit different and want it CHEAP. I frequently buy the exact same quilting fabric here for $14.50 less per meter than other fancier stores. Buy that's only when it's not on sale, when it is on sale it's not unusual to pick up great fabrics at $2 per meter. They occasionally even have designer remnants.

The ladies in the store are knowledgeable and helpful and always go out of their way to find solutions to tricky questions. I especially like their colourful hair!

One thing I would say about Darn Cheap is, if you see something you like, don't think about it and expect to come back and buy it in a few days. It's an incredibly busy store and stock turns over quickly, there's always something new to look at!

This is fabulous information - fabric shops and accessories are getting harder to find, especially good ones with a wrap like this. I like to do a bit of sewing and craft, but it sounds like I should stock up on a trip here. Thanks about the tip about grabbing specials when you see one!

The girls at Darn Cheap are very helpful - they don't mind lots of questions, have an amazing range of products and are also happy to help with special requests. The only problem is that there is so much cool stuff in there, it's hard to pick! :)

This is a great store for anyone who loves to sew. They have a good range of quality fabrics for dressmaking, sheeting and loads of unusual laces & trims, buttons & patterns. They are very reasonably priced, you can get some good remnant bargains. All the staff are experienced in some form of sewing so can offer great advice. A bit hard to get a parking space on Glen Huntly Rd, but worth the trip.

Let's face it, for sewers these days there are not many shops left other than Spotlight and the odd Lincraft. That is why we should support these independent material shops! This shop has good value, some different fabrics and experienced and helpful staff. The trimmings are great particularly for any costumes you might need to make. I have also found nice cottons for summer dresses and useful remnants.

Interesting but eclectic range of fabrics. It's better to go with a broad general idea of what you want rather than highly detailed expectations. They often have really interesting fabric (not necessarily cheap) which you won't see anywhere else. The really cheap stuff is generally trashy - the $2 rolls. Excellent range of trims, etc. Some patchwork fabric, not a big range. Best for dress fabrics for adult females. They sell dress patterns, too.
