5 reviews about eBay Australia

Having a lot of trouble lately:
1/ They froze my account for sales until I provided photo id, which I wouldn't. I don't sell things, so I didn't see it as a problem. They kept sending threatening emails. Today they congratulated me, they've re-opened my account.
2/ Always try to buy from here in Australia. Last 2 electronic items bought listed as located in Australia but when faults arose the emails were Asian and the language barrier just too difficult (maybe intentionally) to deal with. One of the Stores was an out-right 'smart-ass', just re-asking the same questions and throwing up same excuses, for weeks. So, threw away both items and had to source elsewhere.
3/ Purchased a basket of good early in the week. The sales went through individually, though. Come Friday, my Debit Mastercard was overdrawn for the basket amount - yes, the bank let this happen and further, did not care. I immediately called ebay service and explained to the lady (yes - another, in this case severe, language barrier - probably why she was there) who investigated while on the phone and saw the 'double dipping' but wouldn't do anything straight away. I was left with no money until mid the next week (I'm a pensioner). These things happen at a touch of a button, what was the problem to credit the transaction? Anyway, asked ebay how many others had been affected this way, after all the short-term money markets do not close. There was never any acknowledgement or apology.

Approximate cost: $400

No complaints here! I have been purchasing items from ebay for some time now and always been happy with the service I have received. I did receive one damaged item and the seller refunded me the full amount without me having to send it back. Also, I purchased a dress but when it arrived it did not match the photo or description and once again I received a refund. Both refunds were deposited within 48hours. I love shopping with ebay, I can easily compare prices and delivery is usually prompt.

I will never buy on Ebay again. I was guaranteed reimbursement for $45.40 in postage paid to return a damaged item to a seller yet I have been struggling for five months to get Ebay to make good on its guarantee. According to an email from customer service dated 18 April 2018 “Since seller did not process the refund for return postage cost, eBay will cover it for you.” An email from customer service the following day states that a request was sent to Ebay’s Finance team and that it would take 10 to 15 business days for the money to be credited back to my PayPal account. As this did not occur I contacted customer service on 7 May 2018 and again on 22 May 2018 and was informed by representatives on both occasions that my payment was delayed due to a backlog of requests but that my request would be escalated. More than three months later payment still had not been made so I contacted customer service on 27 August 2018 (Ref #: 1-174772192037) and was told by a representative that he would “look into my case”. My request for an email update from him within forty-eight hours was also not forthcoming. Clearly Ebay has no intention of making good on its “guarantee” so I now have to waste more time lodging a complaint with Consumer Affairs Victoria.

Selling an item on Ebay safely costs you around 20% of the total cost for selling and posting the product you sell overall. It's a combination of the standard selling fee, the fact that Ebay takes a cut of the money you get for posting the item (? Go figure) and then they take a cut via PayPal (same company).
While eBay Australia and New Zealand provide an avenue for purchasing second hand or new goods online, or selling second hand or new good online; there are other options such as the new service by Facebook and Gumtree.
I recommend that as a seller, you educate yourself on the following:
> eBay take around about 9-10% of what you sold your item for. Fair enough.
> eBay tale around 10% of the money you get for postage. That is, the fixed, standard costs Australia Post will charge you for posting the item to the buyer. Seems pretty unfair that one.
> I have had two cases of rogue accounts buying goods and trying to get my bank details in the process of paging. Ebay was great in identifying this and cancelled the transaction before I even knew. There is a downside to the fact that they can't protect you from rogue users.....
> The safest way to get payment for your items is by using Paypal. Ebay recommends this - and it's a company they also own. Paypal ALSO take a cut of the total money you get for the item and postage. And! PayPal does not
release the funds to you for three weeks. I.E. They trade with that money on the stock market and make a profit from it..
Overall these are the costs for a safe sell:
- 9-10% of the final price your sold
- Around 10% of the postage money
- Paypal then get around a 10% cut for the total of the postage and sale price.
All up, that's around 20%.
Try other avenues.

I agree that ebay takes too much money off a product you sell, but I love making purchases from other users. I have never had an item lost and they are always good quality.
