This is a great steam preservation railway, and the only downside is that the ride isn't longer. They are working on remedying that and volunteers are working on replacing sleepers and pushing the line through to Baxter. It will take a while and they are always looking for able-bodied or retired person's help.

I remember the first time my son was on here as a baby - he cried so much at the sound of the whistle! Now he loves it and wants to be a driver. The staff are all so friendly and will talk to you and totally empathize anyone's railway passion.

There are steam (the reliable K classes) and diesel engines ( the stately T's) and they run the first three Sundays in the month. Coming up in July is a special "take your teddy on the train day".

Family ticket is $43 and a lot of that goes back into upkeep and refurbishment of carriages etc. Young or old, we all thoroughly enjoyed our ride and not one of us got coal grit in our eye which is the norm on these sorts of outings.

They are also available for charters, kids birthday parties and if you've got a special train lover in the family with an occasion coming up, you can buy them a "driver's experience" where they run the train. Pricey, but a once in a lifetime event.

A great trip and the photos are sensational.

Approximate cost: $43 family $16 adult $13 concession $8 child

The kids and I had a great day. We had never been on a steam train before. The smell of a steam train will last in our noses for ever. The kids enjoyed the sounds the locomotive makes. Was easy to get a ticket with not much waiting. Was kind of like it was back when I was a kid. It was disappointing that we were not on a longer train trip.

Approximate cost: $50

I have always had a passion for older trains and the mrs was interested when i said i'd like to hunt out some steam train adventures around the state, so off i went searching. My sister told me about the Mornington Railway and i looked it up. The price for the trip was reasonable, the place wasn't too far away and i planned a mini trip around it. We arrived at Moorooduc Station with a few minutes to spare. Paid for our tickets (which are quality, old style and look great) and boarded the steamer. It's a relatively short trip, only taking 15 minutes or so from memory, and takes you to Morninton Railway Station. From there a courtesy bus meets you and drops you at one of many points on the way through town. We went and got a milkshake, then returned to the bus, back to the station on back on the train bound for Moorooduc. It's a great experience, love the sound of the old whistle/horn. It's a bit of a bumpy ride (more sideways than up and down) so be careful walking around while in motion as you may bump yourself. It's kid friendly, well kept and worth the money. Give it a try!

Approximate cost: $35

Great steam railway ride from Moorooduc down to Mornington railway station. There is a bus waiting to take you for a trip into Mornington shops and beach. Friendly ticket sellers, happy railway guards. Great day out.
