10 reviews about RetroStar

Retrostar have a good range of vintage clothes, but the price tags don't match at all. Head to Fitzroy or Collingwood and you'll find similar stores with lower price tags. I'm not sure if it's the city location that drives up the dollars, but I couldn't really find anything worth buying for the price on it. Range has gone down hill in more recent years. Good for a look, but you're not likely to find a bargain.

I have visited Retrostar several times, and I always enjoy browsing the range of retro/vintage clothing, accessories, and boots.

Retrostar have a large range of authentic vintage and retro themed clothing, ranging through about the '50s to '80s, with a predominant focus on '70s and '80s items. As these clothes are authentic, availability of clothing from certain eras can often vary from time to time, as can quality. On some visits, I will leave with three or four dresses, and other visits I leave feeling disappointed with current availability. Prices on clothing is average - some items are priced for great value, while others could hardly be considered worth the price tag.

Retrostar also have a room full of band t-shirts, which feature artists from the '50s to current times. I suspect some of these shirts to be reprints created especially for the store, while others seem more authentic. They are priced around $40 a piece, which I find average for a band shirt. Unless I know an item is authentic, I would rather not pay so much for it. I tend to wait for sales to purchase from the band shirt collection.

As for accessories, I do not believe they are not authentic vintage items, I find them to all be reproduced costume jewellery with a vintage feel. However, they are priced accordingly and they have some cute designs available.

Retrostar used to have one of the biggest ranges of authentic vintage cowboy and cowgirl boots in Australia, however I do not believe this is the case anymore. On my past few visits, they have not had many at all, and sizes have been extremely limited. I had previously purchased boots here and they were great quality - I am still wearing them after almost everyday wear for 2 years. If you can find a pair in your size, I'd highly recommend them.

Staff are friendly and helpful, and make the experiences in store enjoyable.

If you are looking for an authentic vintage store, I would probably not recommend Retrostar, however if you are looking to kill time in the CBD, it is worth having a browse at the beautiful (and not so beautiful) fashion pieces from through the years!

Like other reviewers, I used to enjoy shopping here. However their stock has become more and more over-priced, as well as having poor quality. They need to improve to keep me as a customer!

Approximate cost: $60

If you're a vintage junkie, this is the store to shop at.. you can find anything from Charlie's angels' dresses and 80's style outfits.. Mix a vintage top with stylish pants and you'll be the talk of the day...

Years ago, I went to Retrostar and saw quite a few good quality clothes from the 60s and 70s in their store. The service was alright, not terrific, not terrible, and the prices were... alright too, but not as affordable as some second hand stores. But yesterday, upon visiting the store I discovered that the majority of the clothes on display were from the 80s (which actually isn't that old and frankly was an era I was happy to leave behind) and the quality was subpar and the prices were ridiculous. Sure, this store might be the largest second hand (I am reluctant to say "vintage" because 80s clothing is more retro than "vintage", particularly the repurposed 80s fabrics that were made into clothes FOR the store) store in Melbourne, but it is also the most boring and more outrageously priced. I mean, $15 for a fabric belt that is so faded, the print is barely discernable? $39 for a dress that you might need to get altered anyway... and probably reinforced in some areas because it is so threadbare? I used to shop for second hand or vintage clothing for financial reasons. These days, I guess kids shop for these clothes because it is a lifestyle option -- they couldn't possibly be shopping for the clothes because it is thrifty to do so or because of the nostalgic value because some of those children were not even born until 1990. I suppose if you are young and not working and you have money, you can dress how ever you want. But for me, I'm in my thirties and I'll happily pass on Retrostar to hit the Kooki sale, even if the clothes are $10 more expensive (on sale) and the designs are not always to my liking... at least the clothes fit and will survive a few spins in the washing machine.

Approximate cost: $39

Vintage lovers will enjoy the clothes here. I've been here several times and I always enjoy it. The clothing can be particularly expensive, however there are clothing here which you won't find anywhere else. If you are looking for something in particular, I'm sure you will be able to find it in stock. The store is well set out and colourful - making it very welcoming and friendly environment.

I LOVE RETROSTAR! There cloths are of great quality and they have SO MUCH STUFF! It literally is wall - to - wall. I have bought lots from here. Unfortunately, you do have to pay a higher price, but then again there cloths are v. nice.

You could find something smiler by scrounging around op-shops, but it seems they've done it for you.

Everyone I've been to RetroStar with has the same response: "Wow". You will be taken aback by the sheer size of the store, stocked wall-to-wall-to-ceiling with a parade of vintage gear. There will be something for everyone here, especially if you're into a boho-esque asthetic. At times it can feel a little like a vintage production line - a vibe somewhere between an op shop and conveyor belt retail, but you're sure to find something you like, even if it is a quite pricey.
