4 reviews about Royal Oak Hotel

It was a beautiful sunny Sunday, so we decided on a short drive to Clarendon for Lunch.
Chose the Hotel, as it didn't look busy, with only 4 cars parked there. (Was about 12.30pm).
3 couples sat outside in the sunshine and we were the only ones in the dining room.
The waitress was very friendly and like the previous reviewer stated, the dining room did indeed have a lovely country feel to it.
We both decided on the crumbed prawn cutlets, with salad and chips. When it arrived, it was a salt and pepper crumb, which wasn't stated on the menu. My partner loved it but I wasn't so keen - ok but would have preferred plain .
What we were both unhappy with, was the fact that we only got 5 prawns. As we had paid $21 for the main meal, I would have expected at least 8 prawns, as that's what most other hotels serve.
The Hotel is lovely, the service was great, the atmosphere was nice and the food quality was good too .... our only criticism - a bit on the expensive side, for what we got.

Approximate cost: $21

We eat here often and the food and service is always great. The dining room has the character and charm of a lovely country pub. The meals are generous and their daily specials are numerous.

Was great catching up with mates for a drink and something to eat recently. We sat outside taking in the views and enjoyed our steaks and burgers, with beer of course. Service was prompt and friendly. Have been here many times with my family and never been disappointed.

This place is always booked out every time we call, so it's got to be good! Right? No.
So we looked at an old menu on the line and it seems yummy, but they've since changed that menu and it leaves a lot to be desired. Most items are deep fried, so there's no real cooking talent here. And what's not, I consider priced well above average and hence wouldn't be ordered much, if at all. Think $35 for a steak, where I know you can get a decent steak close by for a lot less than that, usually around the $25 mark. Otherwise, the food is all on par with other deep fried food places.
The service at the start was good. We were welcomed, sat, well attended to. Things were explained and the waitress too the time to answer any questions. That was the start.
The end was a sad event. So we go up to pay and the guy asks us to sit and he'll bring the bill over. We sit and wait. And wait. Then he comes over and starts clearing up the table and asks us if we want to see the dessert menu, which we decline. Then he says he'll bring the bill over. Didn't he already say that? So the bill comes and he leaves us, so we put the credit card down and a voucher and he walks away with the bill, stating he'll come back with the machine. Then he processes it and calls me to come to the counter to finalise the bill. And this is the dude we think is the manager.
At least he thought enough to tell us Amex attracts a surcharge.

It's not somewhere I'll be coming back to. Ever.

I can understand why you wont be returning, I wouldn't either if I had experienced that. I have eaten here a couple of times in the last year and hadn't experienced anything like this.
