having a look around Carlton we decided to have a coffee here and decide what we would be doing next. Had we realised their breakfast menu was so good we would have arrived earlier and not already consumed breakfast. Instead we enjoyed our coffee and continued on our way.

Found the staff to be friendly and will return next time for a meal.

Just round the corner from the southern buildings of Unimelb. It is addictively convenient for anyone who studies, works, or lives in the vicinity.
They serve great coffee (original claim to fame), but equally good is the food on the menu. The kitchen is tiny (literally a small space behind the coffee counter, but the staff do a great job, in whipping up high quality meals from the concise yet interesting menu offering.
A favourite on a recent visit - Hand-made crumpets, with coffee infused butter, toasted hazelnut crumb and coffee caramel. Perhaps because of its freshness or the flavour pairing, but this was hands down the best crumpet I have eaten to date. The toasted edges were delicately crispy while the soft middle was slathered in a generous amount of melt-in-your-mouth-make-your-eyes-roll-backwards butter. The coffee presence in both the caramel and the butter was not overpowering.
There are savoury options too. Range of bread based, salad based, or brunch based.

very indie, hipster place, i like the enviro vibe to it and it's pretty casual but sophisticated at the same time

staff are lovely, on my first visit they recommended the hot chocolate which was absolutely heavenly (it had an actual chocolate stick dipped on the cup as well which melted and made it all the more indulgent!)

okay location close to melbourne university, hidden a bit which i guess adds to it's quirkiness

gets a bit busy sometimes, a bit pricier than other cafes around the area, but for the service and the quality it's pretty worth the value, depending on what you're looking for

A sister cafe to De Clieu (Fitzroy) and Brother Baba Budan (City), I have been here many times over the years since it opened (mainly due to the fact that it is so close to Melbourne University and around the corner from my study desk. Surrounds & decor wise, it is housed in a converted warehouse, and the furniture matches (high industrial timber tables & benches, tall metal bar stools). Communal dining is the order of the day.
Seven Seeds is predominantly known for their coffee, roasting their own beans on location. Coffees are reliably good ($4) as always, whether it is a long black or flat white.
The food menu has improved tremendously over the years, branching out from what was a Panini/Sandwich/Muesli only menu to one that is more comprehensive . On the day in question, our group ordered: Eggs scrambled with white miso, coriander and spring onions on crispy paratha roti served with a mild green chilli sambal ($17), Heirloom tomatoes with fior de latte, avocado, fresh herbs and vinaigrette on toasted sourdough ($15), Smoked ham hock salad with green beans, purple congo potatoes, mixed leaves with dijon dressing and sauce gribiche ($15). Prices have gone up, but it is still within reason.
There are definitely more waiters around and food arrives at a much quicker pace, however table service wasn't particularly attentive - water bottles were not replaced (despite the fact that our group of 4 essentially finished the bottle of water the moment it was put down...

A good friend of mine took me here once to have a cup of coffee.. When we entered the premise, it was fully packed.. we had to wait for about 15 mins.. Love the decor.. atmosphere.. once we ordered our coffee, surprisingly we only waited about 5 mins.. the coffee was nicely brewed.. very attentive staff.. Must try..

I've been here a few times, but today's experience convinced me to review.

This cafe is really close to the University of Melbourne Law building, and as such is filled with uni students most of the time. So if possible, you want to time your visit for when people are more likely to be in class because otherwise you'll have a hard time getting a seat/table. The seats are pretty high - it's almost like being in a bar/pub, except that they're serving coffees and cafe food.

The coffee: most people rave about it. I personally dislike it. It's bitter, watery and to me everything a coffee shouldn't be. But there are others who claim it's one of the best coffees in Melbourne. You'll probably just have to try it and make up your own mind! It occurs to me now that I think they do T2 teas as well, so perhaps next time I'll just grab some tea or a non-coffee drink. A cappuccino costs $3.80.

The food: Today was the first time I ate there. I usually just get coffees there when my friends do (begrudgingly). I had avoided the food coz it's gourmet sounding, expensive and we usually don't get tables. But wow - worth the money. The bread is clearly home made and tastes like it was just baked, with a crunchy crust and soft pull apart insides. The burger looked and apparently was amazing. The egg dishes also looked pretty good - would have loved to soak that fresh bread in the yolk! I had a gigantic toasted sandwich (ham, cheese and relish) which was really really good and came with a side serve of lettuce. Cost $11.50.

They do the full menu until 3pm, so pretty useful for us students who don't manage to eat breakfast before leaving home in our rush to get to class hehe.

Oh also worth mentioning, their minimum eftpos is $15. So if you don't expect to pay over $15, bring cash. I'm not sure, but I don't believe they split bills, so also worth bringing cash if you're eating with a group.

Approximate cost: $12

It is a very hidden cafe from the main road, but is surprisingly busy. I am not from Melbourne and only knew about it from a friend who lives in Melbourne. The food is extremely tasty and different to the usual cafe food. The inside decor is very nice - lots of plants and flowers. The meal I ordered was a "twice-cooked pork belly with braised split peas, ham cock, watercress and croutons" and was extremely delicious
