One of my favourite cafes in Hahndorf. My vegan friend and I enjoyed lunch recently, their salads are delicious, we enjoyed a platter together a quite a few cups of coffee. The staff were lovely and their prices are still very reasonable. Very relaxing atmosphere.

As we were too late for breakfast at the Mount Lofty House we headed to Hahndorf and enjoyed a delicious breakfast here. I loved my toasted cheese, pumpkin, beetroot and sauerkraut sour dough sandwich. I know the ingredients sound off together but it was probably the best toasted sandwich I had ever had. My girlfriend opted for the pancakes served with cream, strawberries and blueberries, she loved it. Priced at $15 each, we thought it a bargain. But then we tried out Iced chocolate, OH NO! They were terrible, but how? They just tasted like cool milk with a tinge of brown colouring, they were basically tasteless and at a cost of $10 each, absolutely ridiculous - don't bother with this.

Approximate cost: $50

Service was good, breakfast quite nice, my friend and I tried the pancakes, I think it looked better than it tasted. Coffee arrived and it was not to our liking, not hot enough, seemed like it had been sitting around and they had forgotten to give them to us. Prices are fair.

I have vegan friends so this really is a delightful cafe for them, not really my sort of food but on this occasion I tried their seasonal fresh fruit for breakfast, oh, the strawberries was so delicious, I just couldn't eat enough of them, it was nicely presented, generous and of course delicious. My friends tried the pancakes, which was also generous and certainly looked delicious. Service was quick and friendly.

My girlfriend and I enjoyed breakfast here, the girls were very nice and friendly, many tables available and even an area with a couple of couches to just sit and enjoy coffee. We decided to try the pancakes and oh they were so good, very nicely presented and very filling. We ordered two pancakes each priced at $12, the pancakes were huge, very fluffy and served with maple syrup, whipped cream, strawberries and blueberries. This is the breakfast I recommend you try, you wont be disappointed.

Approximate cost: $12

As a few of my friends are vegan I tend to be lunching in these cafes quite often. Not really my kind of food so I usually have a coffee and try to select something tasty (I really love my meat), so this time round being a cold winters day i decided to try one of their hot hearty soups. I was pleasantly surprised at how nice it was, I really did enjoy it. My friends love this cafe, so I better get use to the soup. Staff are friendly and service was prompt.

Just a week ago, my four year old daughter suffered a serious allergic reaction whilst at The Seasonal Garden Café in Hahndorf. The home-made raspberry cake was labelled ‘vegan’ and ‘gluten free’. I thought vegan meant that it contained no animal products. We didn’t know it contained cashews.

My daughter’s reaction to the cashews was immediate and severe. I had to administer her epipen quickly. A stranger called an ambulance whilst café onlookers and staff watched. For a little while the adrenaline from the epipen made her feel better. In the ambulance, she starts losing conscience and her body is twitching. The paramedic is trying to rouse her, she is violently sick, several times. Eventually, we make it to the E.D of the W&C hosp. She is given priority. Eventually, the drugs work and her colour returns to normal. Exhausted, she sleeps in my arms. The whole experience was traumatising and even a week later I cannot put it out of my mind.

I never knew much about allergic reactions until my daughter was diagnosed with allergies to dairy, eggs, cashews and pistachios. Providing nutrition, making safe meals, reading teeny tiny food labels & preventing cross contamination is a daily struggle. At childcare/school, there’s a blanket ban on all nuts. I was offered the choice of having dairy & egg banned or segregating my child. Instead, I have chosen to educate her about what she can & can’t eat. Invitations to parties mean I’m baking in the kitchen the night before.

Eating out is a nightmare. When I say dairy, eggs, nuts, you can see them blink at me in disbelief. Hot chips are the easiest option – just don’t drop the chips in the bucket containing milk solids in the chicken salt. Try explaining that to a 16 year old.

The Seasonal Garden Café has been able to provide a few options that have been safe for my daughter to eat. Over time it’s become a place where I’ve felt a level of trust as the food is labelled, uses healthy and seasonal ingredients. I am so careful about everything she eats and I kick myself over & over for not checking the raspberry cake. When I saw ‘vegan & gluten free’, I never imagined for a second it would contain cashews.

Once my daughter could return home, I asked The Seasonal Garden Café to display a label stating ‘contains nuts’. This would have triggered a ‘warning’ which would have prevented my daughter’s traumatic anaphylactic reaction and potentially save future lives. The Seasonal Garden Café refused, on the basis that they cannot state all the ingredients. I have made it clear that I am only requesting 2 words ‘contains nuts’ and asked The Seasonal Garden Café to re-consider their position for the safety of their customers.

The stark reality is 1 in 10 children suffer allergic reactions to a variety of foods and nut allergies are in the top five causes. The Seasonal Garden Café owes their customers a duty of care and now that they have had first-hand experience witnessing the consequences, they are aware of the risk. The Seasonal Garden Café made a conscious decision and refusal to do nothing to mitigate this risk. My daughter could have died from anaphylaxis. The Seasonal Garden Café applies lifestyle labels stating ‘vegan’ or ‘gluten free’ but refuses to apply a safety warning stating ‘contains nuts’. I am angered by their hypocrisy peddling healthy food yet for so many, it could mean an unnecessary loss of life.

I found your story to be both disturbing and ignorant. I myself have had some experience dealing with allergies, and fully understand the implications and seriousness of a reaction such as you have explained. Considering your 4 y.o daughter is totally dependant on your wise food choices, then it is therefore your responsibility to ensure the food which you have ordered and purchased is such that is safe for your daughter's consumption. I agree that this is an extremely difficult position, nevertheless I feel it is therefore unfair for you to put the onus back onto other people who would not know of your daughters allergies. GLUTEN FREE AND VEGAN does not mean NUT FREE. Caf owners should not be held accountable or for that matter be required to put ingredients on all their products. People with serious allergies need to arm themselves with knowledge, and ASK the questions.

This restaurant has relocated to a fabulous new setting and now offers an expanded menu with exceptional quality. My family had a booking on a busy mothers day. The service was excellent, food was delivered with little waiting time and there was a great ambiance in the restaurant. Great tasting and wholesome food at reasonable prices. Will be returning for more.

Edit: note that the expanded menu now includes several delicious meat dishes but staff are happy to adapt any dish in my experience.

Not my sort of cafe is I am not vegan but my friend insisted we go here as she is. Our coffee was enjoyable, the staff were great, very friendly and we did enjoy our salads. I just prefer to have a choice of meat with my salad.

While wandering along the Hahndorf main street we decided it was time for coffee. Popped in here and enjoyed our coffee but as noted in other reviews, this is an organic and vegetarian cafe so it was just as well we were not looking for steaks. Very friendly and well run, it would certainly appeal to people who like salads etc.

Had coffee here once, it was ok, but the menu was not for us.
