After a friend suggested a try Zimt for cakes and sweets (I love cakes and slices). I ventured down and was impressed by the layout and presentation of Zimt. It was a little pricey but we do not mind paying for quality. My partner and I ordered our cakes and hot drinks. It was a busy morning, so I was not too surprised that our order took a long time to arrive. When my cake arrived I found it stale. My cake was so dry that it crumbled. I could not eat it. I spoke to the waitress who replied,'everything is fresh'. No other comment. It was left as that. We left, disappointed. We could not get out of there fast enough. Do not judge a book by its cover. After I calmed down I called Zimt and asked to speak with the manger. They took my details and said they would return my call. Two months later and still waiting for a call. Many other better patisseries around.
(Added 09/06/09) After viewing my rating on WOMOW, Michael has returned my call. Customer service and satisfaction clearly a priority to him. I will consider visiting Zimt when in the area.

I did visit Zimt, I did have a poor experience, I did call Zimt, I spoke to a member of staff who did take my details. I did not get a return call. This is my rating from my experience. This is a rating website, not a discussion forum. Lets leave it as such. You can form your own opinion and rating. I am happy to deal with the discrepancies, with the appropriate people in the appropriate channels. Dan

Dan, do you need a tissue?

Since my previous review I have been disappointed to find that I also had a slice of sacher torte that I felt was stale. It happened twice and has put me off this place a bit - especially considering the prices they charge.

I love this place! Everything is delish! And all the staff are very friendly and hard working! The decor is amazing! I would give this place 10 stars if I could.

I walked into this shop with high expectations as it was so beautiful. The service was fantastic with all staff being very friendly. The only thing that let me down was being served a mouldy slice of cake. It is obvious with so much variety there is not a huge turnover! Not happy jan!

Approximate cost: $3-$5

We were very dissappointed to receive this review and we a little puzzed as we have not received any complaints of this nature at the cafe. Our turnover is very quick and if something appears less than perfect, it is not from sitting on the shelf. We have a five star food safety rating and are extremely careful with all our hygiene practices. We would have appreciated this anonymous customer to make us aware of this at the time so we could address the problem (which may be from a number of things beyond our control) and, if they were correct, of course give the customer a refund!

What a treasure this place is! Cakes, biscuits and pastries that are as much a feast to the eye as to the palate! The staff at Zimt display a wonderful blend of profesionalism and family in their approach to their customers and product. I have been to many a coffee shop in Melbourne and interstate, it's always a relief to come back to Zimt. Quality here is high priority.

I stumbled upon Zimt when running for the train at Mont Albert. It caught my eye as I ran past, and on missing the train, I decided to go back and have a look. What I found was a beautiful cafe that looked like it was straight from somewhere in Europe. An enormous glass showcase full of beautiful pastrys, cakes and chocolates is in the centre of the shop, with waitresses carrying trays of freshly baked breads (I recommend the fruit loaf and the rye with carraway seed) and things into the shop front as I tried to make my decision. From first appearance to the time you begin eating (which can be some time due to the endless range of delicious options!) it is an absolute delight. I could not recommend it more highly.

Zimt is one of my absolute favourite cafes in the eastern suburbs. Its a little chocolate covered haven. Not only is the coffee good, but the handmade delicacies are not to be surpassed. From traditional Austrian Sacher Tortes to the Ginger Bread decorations hanging in the window. The minute you step into Zimt, one is transported into a European wonderland. The smells, the sounds, the visual stimulation. I highly recommend finding solace and something sweet in the streets on Mont Albert if you are passing by.

A good tasting and looking cake was important to us for our wedding. We searched Melbourne far and wide looking for the ideal cake. Most places were pushy and tried to influence us into one of their standard recipies at a premium price.

We came across Zimt in a magazine and met Michael who is very passionate about what he does. After discussing what we were after, he listened(!) and suggested a Mille-Feuille (french vanilla slice) covered in chocolate shards.

He made it fresh very early on the morning of the wedding, even though I think it was meant to be his day off! He accepted final payment on delivery.

We served it to guests as their dessert and it went down very well. The cake exceeded expectations on look and taste.

I wish all businesses were like this to deal with. We could not be happier.

Approximate cost: $500
