This review is for Churchill Island Heritage Farm, Newhaven VIC

verified email - 12 Jul 2013

The heritage farm is one of the 3 Phillip Island Attractions included in the 3 parks pass (koala sanctuary and penguin parade are the other 2).

It's a relaxing way for families to spend a few hours. The entry is near the Phillip Island Chocolate Factory, and it is a beautiful drive up to the farm, looking at the water, cows and sheep roaming free.

The farm itself has some fun activities (mostly in the afternoon which is unfortunately if you have a child who still has day naps). They have cow milking, sheep shearing, wagon rides etc.

I'd go again if it was on the 3 parks pass, but probably wouldn't go otherwise, unless I could go at a time to maximise the activities.

Approximate cost: $12 per adult

This review is for Ramada Resort, Cowes VIC

This resort is set on 65 acres, in a convenient position on Phillip Island (near Cowes).
It's fantastic for families as there's a lot to do at the resort, tennis, swimming, playground etc.

Unfortunately some of the units are a bit dated, but I understand they are being progressively done up.

We went in winter, and our accommodation was a sun trap - lovely for winter, but it might get really unpleasant on a hot day.

Other negatives were ants in the kitchen/living room (hard to avoid in a natural bush setting), lots of rubbish everywhere around the bushes, and taking 1.5 days to get some of the extras that should have been included with my package. The cleaning could definitely be improved, ie the person before me left dirty cups, and these weren't checked by housekeeping.

I would definitely stay again, as it's great for the kids, but I wouldn't pay more than $160 a night (it's normally $260 on wotif etc).

Great place to take your bikes as it's easy to ride around. As far as I'm aware the resort don't have bikes for hire.

Approximate cost: $260

This review is for Werribee Open Range Zoo, Werribee VIC

verified email - 12 Jul 2013

Werribee Open Range Zoo is one of only 3 open plain zoos in Australia (Monarto in SA, and the Dubbo Zoo).
Werribee specialises in African animals, but I believe they are expanding their range in the next few years.

The highlight is a tour around the zoo in a safari bus to view the animals in their large paddocks. The buses run about every 10 mins and there's plenty of room on board. You get your safari bus ticket for a specific time (free) w

The zoo itself is good value, at around $26 Per adult and $13 for children. If you go during Victorian school holidays or weekends, kids are free.

It took us approx 3 hrs to see everything at the zoo, including the safari bus tour. We didn't go around the walking trails through.

We would definitely go again.

Approximate cost: $26

The few times I've been to this shop I have left disappointed.
The fruit and vegetables are not good quality (punnet fruit is often mouldy), and bread rolls are very expensive.
They have a good range of local produce, pastries, fruit etc, but it's not at the same standard as Hill St Grocer

This review is for Pensione Hotel, Melbourne VIC

I've heard mixed reports about this hotel and their tiny rooms, so I was rather hesitant to stay here. I booked a newer double room as I thought I'd have more space than the older rooms.
When I arrived they upgraded me to a triple and I have to say I was really impressed (maybe as I had low expectations to begin with).

For $115 I got a decent sized room with a huge TV, and some mould on the roof which I tried not to look at. The bed was incredibly comfortable and the room was clean.
The bathroom was very compact, similar to the size of a bathroom on a cruise ship.
The sink was impossible to use without wetting your feet, ie don't try to wash your face as there's no space to splash.

But for $115 I had a good night's sleep, breakfast at the cafe, free wifi and a glass of champagne.

The service at the front desk isn't the best, and I didn't get all the inclusions I had paid for but I couldn't be bothered to argue the point.

Don't bother with the cafe though. The breakfast is fine -European style breakfast, but the dinner is not worth the incredibly slow wait.

There's a tram stop right outside the door and it's a short walk to Southern Cross station, surrounded by so many other hotels, cafes, shops etc.

For that price I'd stay there again by myself, although I wouldn't stay there with my family.
For someone who doesn't intend to spend much time in the hotel room I think it's great value.

I would recommend you get one of the newer rooms by the sound of it though.

Approximate cost: $115

This cafe has a fantastic range of fresh food to cater for all tastes. It has hot food, a huge range of salads and fresh sandwiches, as well as oversized pies, sausages rolls, vegetables frittats, spanicopitta (spelling?).

The prices are fair for a Melbourne cafe ranging from $7-$10.

There are so many sweet treats to choose from, whether it's macaroons, biscuits, lemon tarts etc.

All the food I have had from this cafe is so tasty, and with such a large range it's hard to know what to choose from!

There's plenty of seats inside, and although they are busy there are enough staff to cope.

Approximate cost: $8

This review is for Salamanca Market, Hobart TAS

Salamanca Market is a Saturday morning tradition in Hobart. It's full of local produce, whether it's farm fresh fruit and vegetables, fresh cut flowers, handmade fudge, locally made kids clothing or huon pine wooden items.
It's not just for tourists. We often go to Salamanca to get breakfast - the mini pancakes are part of our Saturday morning breakfast traditions, as are the wraps from Gypsy Rolls.
There's something for everyone at Salamanca Market.

This review is for La Bella Pizza, Sandy Bay TAS

verified email - 04 Jun 2013

La Bella pizzas may not be as cheap as some of the Pizza Hut and Dominos deals you can get, but they do have a lot more toppings and taste than some of the big chains.

There's plenty of parking nearby in the Sandy Bay Woolworths carpark.

My favourite thing about La Bella is that you can buy pizza by the slice, so if you're just after a few pieces for lunch it's a great place to go. They have good value family deals as well.

Approximate cost: $4-$20

We needed some work done at our house and found it very difficult to get electricians to send a written quote or in many cases even just return a phone call!

These guys were prompt at turning up to quote, sent a written quote promptly, then followed up afterwards. We engaged them for the work - they turned up on time and did the job as per the quote. We were able to get them in to do the job quite quickly.

I would definitely use them again and recommend them to others.

This review is for The Transport Museum, Glenorchy TAS

verified email - 02 Jun 2013

The Transport museum is a great place to take kids. It is the only place in Hobart where you can ride a working steam train or diesel train. The trains operate on Sundays and alternate between a steam train one week and diesel the next.

The museum has various sheds filled with interesting Hobart historical transport items, such as the old double decker trams that use to transport people around Hobart, old buses, fire trucks etc.

It's a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Approximate cost: $10
