Some of the best concerts I've seen have been at the Corner, rightfully a legendary venue on the Melbourne music scene. In the last year, concerts by Yo La Tengo and the Mountain Goats at the corner really blew me away. There's always an interesting band to see at the Corner if you're into Indie music, punk, pub rock and things in that sort of vein - a lot of overseas bands also perform here.

The band room has a few problems with sightlines - the two pillars in the middle of the room can obstruct the view, but the sound has always been good, it's very pleasant now that smoking is banned inside and there's a good range of drinks.

The rooftop beer garden is surprisingly nice given the fairly rough fit-out of the front bar (this is a rock pub, make no mistake) and great for a drink with some mates on a warm evening, with good views of the city.

Like many other uni students, I've been a regular visitor to Brunswick St over the years. The Black Pearl is one of the standouts on a street packed with drinking options. The bar has a very cosy atmosphere, with good music and decor a welcome step-up from the dilapidated boho-chic of most other Brunswick St nightspots (not that there's anything wrong with boho-chic!). Comfy chairs are perfect for relaxing with friends or even having a cuddle with an amour while perusing the drinks menu.

This perusal can take a little while, as there's always a (shortish) range of cocktails, wine and beer on offer. The cocktails have been consistently very good and often feature some exotic ingredients (bison grass-infused vodka, anyone?). They also change regularly, giving a perfect excuse to come back.

Service is good and prices are relatively high (compared to other Brunswick St bars) but represent value for money - the quality of the drinks here is excellent.

Approximate cost: $15 for a cocktail

I am a regular visitor to Bar None, drawn back time and again by the relaxed, refined atmosphere, the great service and, most importantly, by the superb drinks menu that Bar None offers. This is definitely one of the best cocktail bars in Melbourne, with highly skilled bar staff concocting classic and innovative cocktails. Michael Cotter and his team show a genuine passion for the drinks they serve and are very knowledgeable - I have learnt a lot talking to them! A visit to Bar None is an educational experience!

As well as cocktails, Bar None also has an excellent wine list, a great range of Australian and imported boutique beers, exotic and hard-to-find rums, tequilas and more. You can also order from your seat and drinks are brought to you - a nice change from the hectic scenes you see in many Melbourne bars! The music is great, and I really like the relaxed and classy atmosphere of the half-underground bar. It's really well suited for a nice date or to catch up with friends - but don't expect to party or get rowdy. It's not that type of place.

Be sure to try the famous Sazerac. It'll knock your socks off!

Approximate cost: $12-16 for a cocktail
