I've been to this bakery a couple of times to buy pies/pasties/sausage rolls since Brumbys on Carlisle Street closed down, but the quality of their products is dubious indeed. Brings a new meaning to the term 'mystery meat'. Whatever they put in their pies and sausage rolls, it is not of high quality.
Pause a great little bar in Carlisle Street with a clientele more in the late twenties to thirtysomethings. It's not too noisy, so you can meet friends and sit and chat over drinks all night without yelling to hear one another. The seating is largely comfortable and cosy so you can easily spend all night here.
FEAST is a rotisserie Chicken store that serves dine in and takeaway. They have large range of tasty and unusual salads to choose from. A range of rotisserie chicken types that are generally succulent and good quality. The chips are quite tasty too!
Bakers Delight make reliably good bread + sweet and savoury treats. The Quality at the Carlisle Street branch is up to standard, however some of the young 'service' assistants leave a bit to be desired. Considering that old-fashioned bakeries generally offer a wider range and can often have a considerably better product, service is important to get right here.
The Coffee Company have the most comprehensive range of freshly roasted (on the premises) coffee beans in Melbourne. The breadth of types is almost overwhelming and the quality is extraordinary. So naturally the coffee brewed on premises is also preemo - and great for a takeaway or dine in with a bit of coffee cake! They also stock a comprehensive range of coffee accessories and sweeties!
The breakfasts at Gattica are amazing - home-made hashbrowns, mushrooms with rosemary. Delish! The menu is full of mouthwatering dishes at all times of day. Only downside is the great food attracts a LOT of business, making it very hard to get a table at peak times and somewhat slow service. Make sure you have time to enjoy this experience.
By comparison to Comics R Us down the road (and in the city) and with Minotaur, these guys come up trumps. They get in all the overseas and local titles seemingly without exception (whereas Comics R Us just brings in a selection). They'll always help you find what you want, are willing to offer a nerdy chat about the latest titles or movie adaptations and cover the spectrum of nerdy stuff (i.e. comics, mags, books, cards, role play, collectibles, managa, toys etc). Their computer system (or lack thereof) is quite backward, but they make up for it with a wealth of knowledge. Unlike Minotaur, they will give you the time of day. The also have great sales a couple of times a year.
