I opened a Citibank Plus account because it has zero transaction fees for international transactions (ATM withdrawal etc).
The application process was incredibly difficult and my documents were lost. The card was supposed to be sent express post because by the time they process my application (4 weeks) I only had 2 weeks before I was going away on holiday. The card did not arrive at all and I had to spend another week chasing it. The call center staff are extremely unhelpful and do not have an escalation process. The complaints department is the same customer service section so nothing is ever escalated or resolved.
They promised to send out my card same day service so I would have it before I left overseas... That same day service actually took 2 full days after I requested it because they didn't put the request in until too late. The only reason I have my card is because of the helpful people at the courier service.

Once I received my card and I activated it they told me I couldn't use it because my paperwork wasn't done properly... They were the ones that had done it!! Extremely disappointing service from call center and branch staff. They also use outdated 'one time pin' authentication that they don't send through wifi which means you cannot log on to your online banking without having your mobile phone working (when overseas this means roaming) Will avoid in future for all services.

What an absolute joke! It shouldn't be this hard to get such things done and executed properly. I understand where your frustration is coming from.

Absolute rubbush. I had a credit card with CitiBank few years ago. Probably the worst thing i did. I went across to an Amex which even though you sometimes have to pay a surcharge is fantastic. I tried for months to close out the account after paying what i owed on the card. After a year of repeat letters stating i hadn't, i issued to them statements showing i paid in full the account, and it was supposedly closed out.

Two years later i get a letter stating i still hadnt paid my account! I hadnt heard from them, received any letters in between, but somehow i still owed them money. I have apparently rectified the mishap, but thats what happened last time. Oxygen theives.

What a joke, where is the customer service? You think they would check their records before issuing debt collecting letters years later. I am yet to hear anything positive about this business from anyone.

Hi Anthony19831, unfortunately, many of the larger institutions fail miserably when it comes to 'basic' record keeping, communication and customer service. In order to protect one’s credit rating, reputation and avoid costly litigation; it is imperative that consumers remain vigilant when it comes to their own record keeping. E.g. retaining receipts that verify ‘final’ payments. We would also recommend that you request a letter of confirmation (written on the company’s letterhead) stating that your account has been ‘paid in full’ prior to being closed. If the matter remains unresolved, we recommend lodging a ‘formal’ complaint with the ACCC. Either way, this is a positively shameful manner in which to conduct business. Thank you kindly for sharing your experiences with the WOMO community and beyond. Regards, Reeces

Can I give a zero starts review? Even one is too many. Had the BP Card which was good value, but they stopped the program, so I called to try and cancel the card. The process is just soo tiresome. No help at all from the customer service person I spoke to. They tried to put me to a customer relationship person but the lines were bsuy. After a 5 minute wait they still coukld not put me through. To get a call back would be between 3 -5 DAYS!!!!

Stay away from them!

I agree Citibank is seriously the worst. Customer service is appalling. Good on you for your honest review!

Hi RajS, any business incapable of personal and immediate communication is not one that we would choose to support. Thanks for the heads-up! Reeces

Citibank made a mistake on my account, they admit it was their error. But even though I tried to resolve it straight away, they still called me after 9pm on several occasions, called me on ANZAC day, called me on the public holiday Queens Birthday and each time it was for the same thing - an error they created and would not fix up. I would say over 12 hours of my life was wasted explaining the same thing again and again.

Worse bank I have ever dealt with having call centres overseas doesn't exactly help things, as they don't care what time they call you here in Australia and are actually quiet rude and demanding!

Hi Parge, thanks for the detail and the warning. Given the various reviews on WOMO (and other websites), we will be steering clear of Citibank. Regards, Reeces

The Citibank group has a lot to offer but it seems that most things need to be done via the internet or phone. I went into the bank to ask for a statement print out and they were unable to access my account and print out the statement. It seems crazy that banks are no longer able to assist you.

Hi Fional12, this sounds very strange indeed and if this is their policy, then it will certainly work against them. Thanks for the heads-up! Reeces

Bank has so much promise, but just won't deliver. Indian call centre is efficient, but offers no flexibility. Solid products.

Yet you gave them 3 stars??? I would say this review would be worth 1 star myself.

I applied for a new citibank low-rate mastercard (the one they have been advertising on TV with 1.9% interest) and was appalled at the way I was treated. Despite having faxed through all the documents they originally requested (and there were a lot of them) they constantly rang me saying they needed more information, at night and during the day, despite me telling them not to ring me at work. They also rang my employer quite a few times and demanded that she tell them personal details about me, when they only needed to know how much I earned. I could not believe the questions I was being asked, mostly by Indians who I had trouble understanding. I applied for a mortgage several years ago and the process was simpler! I eventually lost my cool after I received another late night phone call while out with friends asking for documents I had already sent weeks earlier and told them to cancel my application, just not worth the hassle.

Hi Carolb4, what an absolutely appalling manner in which to conduct business. We can see why you canceled your application and hope that this prevented any further harassment. Seriously unprofessional! Thanks for taking the time to let others know of your most unsatisfactory experience. Regards, Reeces

I had to open a click bank account for one of the survey sites that i joined, I'm not sure if i can add or withdraw funds to my account as i only have an Australian bank account. I only opened it to claim all of the money that i was going to get paid for doing surveys. HAHA

I opened a ready credit account. They took nearly two months to create an account and without a business center you were always talking to foreign telephone answerer's. Very disappointed with there service.

Hi Emilyw6, in our opinion, any bank that takes this length of time to open an account is not worth the time and effort. Given that this banking institution seems to be incapable of delivering the most ‘basic’ of services, we will be steering clear of them. We would like to take the time to thank everyone who has gone out of their way to write about their experiences and register their concerns. Thanks, Reeces

I have a personal credit card with Citibank - They are pretty good and understanding if you have a late payment or you need to work something out with them.
Applying was easy and quick as well.
The staff are very friendly.
The interest rate is one of the best I've seen and I'm never surprised at the interest on my bill each month like I have been in the past. It's really very reasonable.
