Dropped into Carlingford as I've been away for a couple of years (in Canberra where we struggled to find a nice Chinese [or any other] restaurant. I wanted to have a nice hot-pot (roast pork & dofu) - I used to drop in here every now & then, I think it was called Cafe de Hong Kong, can't be sure, but now its a Chinese ceramic & furniture shop (great stuff). Ended up we went for Yum Cha at Fortune Palace. We have been there before & it wasn't 'to die for'. Actually surprised - Thursday lunch & the place was chockas. Only a 1 minute wait for a table. Usual choices - taste was better than last time. We had - prawn dumplings, chive dumplings, veggie dofu rolls, chicken feet (of course), beef tendon, cuttlefish tenticles, & they all tasted great. We will be going back. Fresh chilli was free & very hot.
We also had fresh jasmine tea. $51 for the both of us.

Approximate cost: $51

Love coming here for yum cha on the weekends when all dim sum are $5.90. Expect to wait for a table as it gets very very busy. The atmosphere is buzzing and loud! Trolleys full of an assortment of dim sum, noodles, congee etc are pushed past constantly so you never have to wait long at all to start eating once you are seated. Favourites are the xiao long bao (soup dumplings), prawn cheung faan (steamed sheets of rice noodles with prawns and sweet soy), steamed prawn dumplings, pork siu mai dumplings and of course mango pancakes for dessert! Includes free chinese tea.

I came here for a family dinner last night. I was able to have vegan dishes prepared for myself, including a mushroom dish and a bean curd dish. We got a section of the restaurant for ourself, which gave our family more privacy, although the noise level is not that much better. Food came at suitable times so that we weren't waiting too long.

I came here again yesterday for yum cha. There is a wide variety of food, but as a vegan the choices for me were limited of course. I was still able to order steamed rice from the kitchen to eat with the vegetables.

The place was very busy yesterday (Sunday lunch). One of my family members came earlier than us, and were waiting in line for at least 30 minutes. When I arrived, we waited a further 15 minutes before being seated. However, the restaurant did their best to accommodate us.

Came here on a Saturday night specifically for their famous chicken. I even made a reservation to check if I needed to reserve a chicken, they assured me I didn't. Arrived at 7:30 only to be told they've sold out. Even worse, I was served by the manager who was shouting at other colleagues, never made eye contact with me, kept bouncing around. I ending up leaving after the manager wouldn't even take my order without leaving my table. I would never come back to this place no matter how good their chicken is.

Wow, that sounds awful. I never had such a bad experience when dining here. Usually the service is great.

Hi Panda91, what a shameful situation. Good on you for leaving! We hope the business in question takes notice of the negative reviews and works toward improving their customer service, which is clearly unsatisfactory. Appreciated the heads-up! Regards, Reeces

I've heard that the service can be terrible here. A friend of mine came here, the food was too pricey so they got up to leave but were shouted at for drinking their tea.

My family and I love coming to Fortune Palace for yum cha and dinner every week. Lots of parking available at the car park underneath. We love it there because the dish size are relatively larger when comparing to other Chinese restaurants. We are always so full that we need to take-away the leftovers. The dishes are delicious too. A few of the dishes that we order every time are the steamed trout, Golden crab bowl with rice noodles and the Gwai Fei chicken. They also give us red bean soup as dessert. Staff are very efficient, serving teas and bringing out food quickly. The place does get abit noisy just like other Chinese restaurants.

I went here on a sunday for yum cha.

Sundays are the best days for yum cha. The atmosphere is buzzing and the food keeps coming out.

BUT, this did not happen.

I was sitted in the back of the restaurant where the food didn't really come to us.

The waitreses were trying to get rid of the food on their trolleys meaning we were offered the same food at least six times.

We waited for more than half an hour for more food but left with only eating two dishes.

My hungry boyfriend and I were annoyed the staff didn't really care about us.

And it's not cheap. If the price justified the quality and the service then I would be ok with it but saying that I was ok would be an overstatement.

Approximate cost: $40

Our experience was not as bad but we would not frequent this place often.

Hi EllyC, thanks for such a well written and detailed review which many are sure to appreciate. Hopefully the business in question will learn from their mistake. Regards, Reeces

I agree that service can make all the difference when going to a more expensive place. If the service isn't good and the food is expensive, sooner or later they will lose customers.
