It is the perfect place for special/nice occasions, either for a yum cha lunch or for a more formal chinese dinner. The setting is quite lovely and luxurious, the staff professional and the food really does deliver.

Such great quality food. The interior is nice and large and creates a very comfortable surrounding. The services was very great and although it is pricey I will be back on special occasions.

The best Congee outside of China. However you MUST make a book for Sunday brunch as this place is sooooo busy. dumplings yum - tea yum. Its a lovely restaurant - check out the vases and artwork which is overlooked by many.

Approximate cost: $40

Really nice place, very glamourous i think. The food was not the greatest ive had for the price, what annoyed me was my meal came out in about 15 minutes... waiting for my partners.. waiting... mines getting cold... ask the waitress whats going on and she has no idea. We waited literally 35 minutes after i recieved mine for his, so i just watched him eat. Not what you want on a nice date, we recieved no discount or apology.

Golden Dragon Palace was setup to be one of the top places for Yum Cha in Melbourne.

However we find that this place is similar in concept to Plume which is not too far away.

The place exudes luxury with its high class paneling and elegant tables and chairs, however the proof of any yum cha is not in the decor but the food and its offering.

We found that the dim sum was good but not as good as our number 1 place, Taipan. However the price does not reflect the value that they claim to offer. Some dishes also came out and were cold so we needed to send them back to the kitchen to be reheated. Basics such as har gao (prawn dumpling) lacked "springiness" and freshness in taste. Siu mai tasted overly porky (perhaps lower quality meat?) and should have shone through with a hint of prawn however we could not taste it!

It was also a bit frustrating as we had to also flag down staff to help refill our tea, which for a high class yum cha place we should not need to do.

The value vs quality equation did not match up for us, we find that there are other places that offer better service, better taste and better value.

Approximate cost: $10

One of my fave yum cha place, slightly more expensive but totally worth the money. They have so many varieties of yum cha items carted around the tables. Some of my fave items are the deep fried white baits, chicken feet, lau sar (coconut custard buns).

This restaurant is similar to yum cha in many ways. They have great service and their food is quite delicious!

Fine dining for yum cha = the higher prices. The decor inside this restaurant is amazing and very fancy. It really does feel a little like a palace for royalty with the heavy big chairs. The dumplings are one of the best I've had in Melbourne.

Dinner on the other hand is not worth the high price. We had the set menu for 8 and the menu consisted of very normal average Chinese restaurant dishes. None of which impressed us and cost us $400-$450.

Have been here a couple of times for Yum Cha. Their dim sum are definitely a step higher in quality than most other Yum Cha places...especially the dumplings containing prawn. The design/decor inside is also impressive - one of the more nicer looking yum cha establishments. But of course the higher quality food comes the higher prices. Its not cheap but it is worth the visit if you haven't been before for yum cha. (Dinner on the other hand is not worth the exuberant prices).
