Hi. Just wanted to point out that the idea of Lentil As Anything is NOT that just anybody can pay $2 for their meal if they feel like it. Customers of Lentil who actually have the means to buy themselves a meal in a restaurant/cafe setting, should pay an amount that AT THE VERY LEAST covers their meal (including ingredients, labour and service), and really if you have the means you should pay more. This is what allows those people who wouldn't normally be able to eat out (homeless, new migrants, people on a pension) to pay only what they can afford, and for the restaurant to still actually run.

Those who don't like the idea of paying a little more than what the meal might have actually cost to put on your plate, shouldn't really eat at Lentil because paying less than what you can afford here amounts to taking advantage. It is abusing the system of honesty and of contributing to the community that are the goals of this place. A donation of around $8-$20 would be appropriate if you have a big meal, with 1 or 2 drinks and dessert. This allows others to pay $5 when that's all they can afford.

There was a doco on SBS a while ago about the fact that Lentil As Anything is in deep debt because the amount that people pay into the box is consistently less than even just the ingredients, let alone the labour and service. So if you believe in this place, don't abuse their trust in you.

Lentil as anything is a great place for a get together, you choose what you want to eat from a kind of buffet, and at the end of your meal you choose what you think it was worth.
The food is great, natural and fresh. and the staff are all lovely.

Nice vegetarian food with a good choice of dishes. The staff are very friendly and always willing to offer suggestions. There are no fixed prices so it operates on an honesty system where you pay what you think for what you have eaten. Its nice to stop there for breakfast (great pancakes) or lunch after visiting the market.

Lentil as Anything is a fun experience, rather than fantastic food. The food is very enjoyable - tasty, healthy - and a few unusual dishes (unusual good - not unusual bad). This venue is more about the experience. At the end of your meal, you decide how much it was worth and how much you want to pay into the honesty box. It's located in the old Abbotsford Convent, which is now used like a local community centre. There are artists' premises and alternative medical practitioners on site, a radio station and a couple of food outlets, among other things. It's worth spending some time exploring the grounds and buildings. The restaurant itself is very basic with plastic tables and chairs - plus some outdoor picnic tables. They have live musical performances occasionally. Good fun - especially of you're vegetarian.

Thanks for this rating Luke - I had heard about this place before, but had forgotten about it until now. Will definitely have to check it out.
