Great fish and chips! The guy who owns it knows his fish! and he surely knows how to cook them!
The only downside would be that he covers them with far too much salt. His chicken salt is great.. but not in that amount!

Jonahs is a walking talking dictionary on fish and what goes best which way (fried, grilled etc).

He does it the old school wog way of cooking the fish and chips so the chips are thick and not as crispy as the new style fish and chips but the fish is AMAZING and always fresh!

I been traveling a bit and one of the things I love to try is good fish and chips! While some have come close, none of them can top Jonah's. The owner really knows his stuff and is always ready to recommend you a different fresh and tasty fish. He's always friendly and remembers who you are. And if your not in the mood for fish I highly recommend the burgers as they are amazing!

Approximate cost: $10

I go thru Ballarat a few times a year and always try to stop at Jonahs for a feed. I was first introduced to it by my mates who were doing Uni in Ballarat its in a good position easy to drop in a grab some golden fresh fish and chips on ya way. The old bloke knows his stuff and is respectful, to the point and business like, im always given options on something new to try but i cant go past the king george whiting, the battered flake and the chips, Ive had a burger from there too and they go pretty good. The place has great food and is very reasonable in cost and portion size especially when u consider what the big fast food places are offering these days and have a much worse effect on you health.

Great experience - the man is a veritable encyclopedia on fresh fish. Arguably as good as anything in NSW or Queensland. Competitive with another (2) outlets close by. Will definitely pass this on to friends when they visit Ballarat.

The man working there was rude and inconsiderate of other people in the shop as he was speaking loudly to one particular man and not serving others. He seemed to look through me instead of taking interest in what I was ordering. The food was terrible, overcooked and was NOT the price listed on the board. When queried he didn't apologise, rolled his eyes and slammed my change on the counter. Definately the worst fish and chip experience I have had in the last 20 years.

Every time my girlfriend (who is originally from Ballarat) and i go to Ballarat we stop in at Jonahs for some amazing cooked seafood, we usually get grilled dory, calamari some chips and potato cakes, which are fresh and super tasty they come wrapped old school style with white butchers paper, we also get a takeaway of freshly shucked dozen sydney rock oysters and around christmas time we grab a fresh cray and smoked trout which we book ahead. Its a great fish shop and we always tell our friends to stop by when they go to Ballarat too.

We were ordering fish and chips for lunch, for one of the guys birthday. This was a phone order, and was told about 15mins. When I entered the shop, I was informed our order had not been processed yet, as it may have been a hoax.

That's fine, but let me tell you, the smell of oil, and the colour of it, were absolutely dreadful.

The steamed dim sims were undercooked, while the chips were sogging and extremely oily. The only thing doing for it, was at least the flake was reasonable.

Approximate cost: $28
