I've used these people a couple of times for computer repairs, and I've noticed their level of care and customer service declining, which is a shame. When I first found them they were a great little family run business, and it was a friendly place where you felt comfortable taking your PC to. But I've had some bad experiences the last few times I've gone in, and because I'd recommended them in the past, a family member took their computer in and had a bad experience too...so I will not go back, which is a real shame, they had such great potential.
A few little things, like them forgetting to connect the harddrive again after taking it in for repairs...and they did it with a CDrom as well. Not a big deal for me since I know enough to see that was the problem, but generally people taking their computers in to be repaired won't be savvy enough to notice something like that nor know how to plug it back in themselves. So it means an annoying trip back, when it's something they should check. My computer went in with black plastic headed screws you can turn by hand, and came out with silver normal screws (a small thing, but still...). I'd asked for the black faceplate of my DVD drive to be used in my black case, yet they put it in with the beige one (and if I hadn't mentioned it, they would have kept the black plate since it wasn't in my pc box so they had to go out the back and find it)... like they didn't notice a beige DVD sticking out like a sore thumb in a black case? We'd discussed that I planned to sand back the case and repaint it, yet he stuck the XP sticker onto the side of the case - not only making it look unattractive, but pointless since I'd be sanding that case to repaint it, so would be repainting it! So all these things point to the fact they just didn't listen and don't take enough care making sure everything is as it should be. And given the amount of time I've spent there for those last computer repairs, I should be easily rememberable.
The last time I went there though was a bit of a nightmare. I'd bought a new computer, and had some other stuff done, like copying contents of one harddrive to another machine. They ended up installing windows ME over the top of my 98 because they couldn't find a driver, which made a VERY unstable computer... and while my computer was there, they accidentally broke the door panel off and tried to give it back to me without the door. When I commented on it I got no apology and he had to go off and search for the missing door. Its not repairable, so now it's stuck on with stickytape, and I'm *not* impressed about that. I understand accidents happen, but a simple apology would have gone a huge way to easing my anger over that.... and a discount on the work I had done would have been nice, considering all the other stuff that was going on at the same time.
What other stuff? well I also bought a brand new machine from them, I got it home and 30 mins later it crashed. Each time I rebooted, the time until it would crash again was dropping, getting down to around 2 mins. If I left it for an hour, I'd go back to getting 30mins from it. This said to me that it was an overheating issue (and I'm no computer guru). They assured me it wasn't, and tried changing the video card, motherboard, harddrive and reinstalling windows (?). Despite the fact it worked longer when the side of the case was off, but hardly at all when it was on, they refused to believe it was an overheating issue. Eventually they notice that the PSU fan wasn't turning at all (surprise surprise, it was indeed a heat issue). So finally after 13 trips there and back, and HOURS spent waiting there... I got my BRAND NEW computer home and working. Which really isn't good enough. They should have just given me a different new computer and tried to fix the issue with that one in their own time, instead of expecting me to keep bringing it in.
Which leads me to a tip... if there is a computer problem that a fixit shop can't duplicate, make them try with the case back on. It wasn't until the last visit that I realised all their testing was done while the case was off, which was why it wasn't overheating and crashing for them, when it did the minute I got it home.
