Stumbled upon this place while out exploring Fitzroy and was really impressed. I would describe it as an authentic Japanese experience. Cute, wee, eclectic restaurant with amazing food.

For only $15 Wabi Sabi does a great special of a miso soup and bento bowl. I had the vegetarian bento bowl and it was wonderful - fresh, tasty and heaps of variety in one dish. An ingenious idea of having a bit of everything in one meal in its own wee sections. Mine included rice, tofu, ginger, Japanese style salad and noodles along with a deep fried potato style cake.

What a hidden gem!

Approximate cost: $15.00

A fantastic dining experience.Great food and a very interesting and stimulating interior. The walls are heavily adorned with quirky old fashioned Japanese adverts and paintings. There are tables that you can sit down at cross legged, and the backgarden is a little bamboo heaven. The staff are friendly and unobtrusive.I have been going there for years and never had a bad meal.

Great food, friendly service in a really nice setting especially love the outdoor Japanese Garden.
The good: fresh fish and delicious traditional Japanese dishes, family friendly place. Easy to get a booking on the night if it's a last minute impulse to go out for dinner.
The bad: while it's lovely outdoors in the garden, the indoor area has a rather constant unpleasant odor (probably from all the cooking in the kitchen). Also there is a small variety of sushi dishes.
Overall, definitely one of the better Japanese restaurants.

I love Wabi Sabi - good food, great atmosphere, and great service. The menu is excellent and doesn't serve the same stuff as every other japanese restaurant in Melbourne. Good vegetarian options as well. The squid is excellent.

Approximate cost: $20 - 30

Great, funky retro Japanese restaurant on Smith St. Food is great - try the seared yellow tail kingfish if you get the chance. Staff are lovely. Only problem is that it's tiny and often packed. The courtyard out the back is gorgeous - book there if you can in summer for a fab night out.

Approximate cost: $20
