This review is for Capalaba Wreckers, Capalaba QLD

verified email - 30 Oct 2012

Capalaba Wreckers have acres upon acres of vehicles to be pulled apart and sold, bit by bit. So large are the premises that the employees take off on scooters to source the parts. Walking would take far too long! You have the option of either perusing by yourself and picking off your own parts, or having the blokes in the store do it for you. It's cheaper doing it yourself. Capalaba Wreckers also sell a large range of expensive high performance tyres for large vehicles. They have a nice assortment of ice cold drinks and magazines for perusal as you wait for your part to be found. Highly recommended!

Thanks to a review on WOMO I at last checked out this new Redlands business, Redlands Produce, today. I was knocked over by the range of quality food for both dogs and cats. Resplendent in large display bays are Advance, Nitro, Iams, Eukanuba, Royal Canin and Purina Pro Plan feeds, amongst others. They also sell dog beds and kennels, cat play gear and a wide variety of dog chews. 20kg bags of feed seem to be the norm and to this end there's a wide selection of feed stuffs for everything from guinea pigs to wild birds. Redlands Produce also stock a good variety of live fish, principally gold fish, together with tanks and associated paraphernalia. Bantam chicks, of several exotic varieties, are offered for sale, together with the usual produce fare of hay, straw and the like. This large, clean and new store is a pleasure to visit.

This review is for The Nook, Thornlands QLD

The Nook by Gislers takes one back to the old days of road side fruit and veggie stalls. With the ever expanding urban spread of Brisbane I'm amazed that this little gem is still in existence. The Nook prides itself on Farm Fresh Fruit and Veggies and together with a good selection of fresh, well priced produce, they also sell organic honey, organic yoghurt and free range eggs. At $5.50 a dozen I thought the free range eggs a little pricey, but that's probably because I've got my own free range hens laying for me :) The Nook also sells Ian Gisler's Home Made Pies, cold drinks, ice and a nice assortment of essential food stuffs. Everything is presented in a charmingly appealing way.

This review is for Jetty Store II, Redland Bay QLD

verified email - 30 Oct 2012

The Jetty Store II is both the closest and only shop near the Redland Bay Jetty. The passenger ferries and vehicular barges to the Southern Moreton Bay Islands (SMBI) depart from near the shop. It's for this reason that the Jetty Store II is such an integral part of this precinct of Redland Bay.

Whilst essentially a take-away store, the Jetty Store II has recently undergone renovations the aim of which, I'm sure, is to appeal more to the cafe society. Whilst burgers remain the mainstay of their menu, and the bain-marie holds an assortment of pre-cooked items such as dim sims, muffins and sausages, there's clearly an attempt to go 'up-market". A new shop layout and counters display an emphasis towards good coffee and quality sandwiches. Outside there is an ample supply of tables and chairs for alfresco dining.

Located on a convenient corner location opposite the Victoria Point Shopping Centre, Kiss My Fish is a licensed seafood restaurant. With plenty of alfresco dining, the store is popular amongst lunch-time shoppers. The menu is extensive and includes reasonably priced starters such as Octopus at $6.50 per serve. The scrumptious seafood meals are all served with beer battered chips, salad, tartare sauce and lemon with prices starting at $10.90 for a calamari meal. Kids' meals with beer battered chips and sauce are $5.90 and include chicken nuggets and chips, calamari and chips, dagwood dog and chips, and fish and chips. Burgers, snacks and breakfast is also served.

Approximate cost: $From $10.90

This review is for Newsworx, Victoria Point QLD

Located in the Victoria Point Shopping Centre, opposite Coles, Newsworx is a very large newsagents. Always very popular with Golden Casket product purchasers, you will usually find yourself waiting in line to buy the scratchie or lotto ticket that you hope will change your life forever.

Newworx has an extensive arts supply including many canvases of various sizes. They also sell children's educational books and supplies, shopping trolleys and currently have their very large Halloween stock at 25% off. They also carry an absolutely huge range of Hallmark greeting cards. In the lead up to Christmas and other festive seasons they frequently have trestle tables outside of the store packed with bargain priced games, toys and jigsaw puzzles.

This review is for Capalaba Tyre Service, Capalaba QLD

verified email - 30 Oct 2012

I've driven past Capalaba Tyre Service dozens of times and frequently pondered its somewhat bedraggled appearance. This, I thought, was my kind of tyre shop. No fancy laminated displays, just makeshift shade covers, worn lounges and hundreds upon hundreds of tyres.

When eventually I needed tyre repairs this was the first place I thought of and indeed I was not disappointed. In less than 5 minutes an unfixable tyre was replaced by a good condition second hand one, and I also had an extra rim and second hand tyre as well. I couldn't have been happier. I also had a good chuckle when the service person had to search for the eftpos machine lost amongst parts. A classic!

Approximate cost: $100.00

This review is for Sweet Corner, Victoria Point QLD

Talk about a kid in a lolly shop! This tiny little store is packed full of lollies, chocolates and fudge from around the world. Beautifully displayed, you can find anything from sugary Watermelon Slices to Harry Potter Chocolate Frogs. The variety of fudge is extraordinary and the lollies can be bought pre-bagged or individually. Prices start from a low 40c for your choice of 18 different coloured chocolate foiled hearts. I'm not entirely sure, however, how anyone could justify paying $25.00 for 2kg bulk bag of jelly babies. Check out Sweet Corner's Facebook page for a tempting photographic display of their goods.

This review is for Sew Much Easier, St Kilda East VIC

Sew Much Easier is a fantastic Australian sewing store and website. The store sells Batting & Backing, Fabric, Fashion Essentials, Feet & Attachments, Haberdashery, Mannequins, Patterns & Books, Sewing Machines and Tools & Equipment.

Without a doubt the best thing about Sew Much Easier are the incredibly detailed and user friendly descriptions provided for each product sold. These descriptions are pages long and resplendent with photos and diagrams to illustrate the uses and features of the items. It was from Sew Much Easier that I discovered the joys of the adjustable bias binding foot for my Janome sewing machine. It really is the "Dressmaker's Secret" and I can't imagine now how I ever survived without it. Previously bias binding was a "no go". Now I use it all the time and have the most professionally finished items.

This review is for PDF Classic Books, Lalor VIC

Are you after a long out of print book but don't have the money or time to obtain the original in the collectables market? Then look no further than PDF Classic Books as they may have exactly what you're looking for. PDF Classic Books have thousands of books which they have digitally captured from original library copies and transferred to PDF format. As these books are long out of print the copyright has lapsed and therefore the copies are entirely legal.

As a result of watching the brilliant ABC1 series "Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries" earlier this year, I acquired a taste for 1920's fashion. As a sewer I went searching for sources that could enable me to bring this period to life. After extensive searches PDF Classic Books was one of the only sources I found and to my complete joy they were phenomenally inexpensive. At the bargain price of $4.78 they have a 1910's 124 page textbook "Practical Millinery Lessons". Even cheaper, at $2.85, is the 1924 book "How to Make a Dress in an Hour: 17 Flapper Style Sewing Patterns". I couldn't have been happier with my finds. Now I've just got to find the time to get sewing and to learn the craft of millinery :)

Approximate cost: $2.85
