Great place to go for group get togethers. The atmosphere is very likeable and warm for a starters, with a bit of sophistication and a touch of relaxed easygoing vibes in the waitstaff. As for the menu, with a great selection of small share plates, as well as large table share platters/centerpieces ie. whole rib eye or whole suckling pig, you will be sure to gather the crew round the table.

I can see why they received 2 michelin hats. The entire experience really is sublime. You don't just do to spice temple to eat the delicious food, it is much much more than that. It is a real living experience, that you go to simple enjoy - from the atmosphere, hospitality, delicious food etc etc.

This review is for Ripples, Bentleigh VIC

Like all large established middle of the road chinese restaurants, Ripples can be a hit and miss sometimes depending on the timing of your visit, the floor staff on duty, the history of your patronship with the place etc etc.
On a good visit, you can have quite a pleasant experience. On a bad visit, you may find yourself waiting an inordinate amount of time for food to arrive, absent service, uncomfortable surrounds etc. For me, the risk/return does not balance, but for others it may work.

This review is for Shanghai Village Dumpling, Melbourne VIC

12 Jan 2015

I recently went, and can understand now why the place is so popular and well spoken of. The atmosphere is just very authentic, with that buzzing vibrancy and cheer that is present of any middle class yum cha establishment. Secondly, the yum cha menu (or offering rather) is vast. The dumpling menu itself is an essay, without consulting the vegetarian options, fried delights, and of course sweet delights. And you can afford to sample a lot too, so long as the stomach agrees, given the affordable price point.

I really love this place. It is a hidden gem!
The dining space is bigger than you initially think, with a alfresco tables out the front, a front room where the bar & coffee machine is with window bench or table seating, and then towards the back there is further dining space. There have created a lovely cosy local atmosphere and the menu is delightful. Those who love big breakfasts will be especially pleased, it comes with a fried egg, croquette, baked beans, breakfast sausage, black pudding, and streaky bacon.

This review is for Pantry, Brighton VIC

12 Jan 2015

I would agree that the food is not the centre of attention at Pantry. The place does feel somewhat more like a boutique or food providore. However, that is not to say that it can't be a nice place to go for a drink and a bite, in pleasant surrounds. The food whilst not groundbreaking in style, execution or presentation, is reliable if nothing else.
