Once weekly I get my hair blow waved and I get a friendly coffee at Carnegie Hair Place. All of the hairdressers and lovely, boys and girls , the jokes fly and we enjoy rating the atrocious fashion sense of many male and female fashionistas who feature in the mags provided for customers there. It's a great place to get your hair perfect and the coffee is good, too. My hair looks and feels a lot better since I started going here about a year ago and my stylist (Sophia - great at colour and TRIMS - understands the difference between TRIM and Whack all of my hair off please!) has talked me into a few new ideas that have looked fantastic. They're very creative, while respecting what you want to look like when they finish with your head! Talk to these people if you're looking for fashion bargains, too. I always feel utterly glamourous when I leave.

Really great pizzas, steaks and garlic prawns. I've been eating here for a number of years, it's priced pretty right for the quality of food. The service could be a little better, but they're friendly and the food is consistently good.

Approximate cost: $varies but generally reasonable

Great bookstore, great quality selection of photographic and music books. Very helpful staff. No damn parking though!

This is the best chicken I've had in Melbourne, great stuffing, and I'm completely addicted to the cheesy potatoes. Excellent stuff and a really nice greek guy behind the counter, the lady is friendly, too and the salads are nice and fresh.

Approximate cost: $10

I have been shopping at USA foods for many years, since I migrated from the States. I'm an Aussie Citizen now but I love knowing that I can drive over the USA foods and get Louisiana Hot Sauce and Pumpkin Pie Mix. I can't do a proper homestyle dinner without shopping here first.

It simply isn't authentic American diner food. We had frozen onion rings straight from a McCain's bag in the freezer, probably. We also had a burger which was remarkable only for being entirely unremarkable and a bit greasy. A formerly frozen corndog was served that was pretty awful and tasted baked as opposed to fried. i am from the US myself and I can promise you a diner like this wouldn't be open very long where I'm from. It's a pity the food isn't better because the people are lovely and the place looks great. I can cook frozen food at my own home for a lot cheaper, thanks.

Approximate cost: $12
