This review is for Ding Hao Chinese Restaurant, Adelaide SA

Ding Hao offer a solid and competent range of yum cha. Book if you want a table or be prepared to wait. As others have pointed out the staff often forget things but hey they are not being paid a kings ransom either (typically under award rates at 5 to 8 per hour in china town) it all helps keep prices under control i guess and gives students some jobs.

This review is for Standom Smallgoods, Kilburn SA

The best smallgoods manufacturer I have found to date – anywhere. I always miss their products when I am overseas. The service is reasonably friendly, but please remember to a number ticket to get in the cue. I have found all the meat products to be of a high quality and refined in nature. Vienna sausages have a smooth feel when eaten and are not salty like the ones you often get in supermarkets. The same for their hams and smoked meats, not salty like supermarket bought stuff. Bacon is also nicely done and not too salty. My favourites include: Chicken Vienna sausage, ‘cheese and chilli' Kranski, T-bone steaks, Polish sausage, ham of the bone and the double smoked ham. They also have a good selection of slightly unusual raw sausages too. Watch out for when they have specials on the likes of Kranski and Vienna style sausages as these store very well in the freezer. Overall the product is fresh and not salty, even my friend who doesn't tend to like the small and taste of pork as a rule will eat their stuff! highly recommended! Ignore the dingy location, but hey it helps keep prices down ;-)

This review is for Muratti, Prospect SA

Muratti is my favourite of the traditional European style cake and gateaux shops. They have a very rich selection of cakes from the very heavy to the not so heavy fruit and nut flans. Their mud cake is a favourite and will last for weeks – both because it is packed full of yummy sweetness and also because it is so heavy you can only eat a few bites in a sitting! Another favourite is a less heavy chocolate moose filled gateaux with white chocolate curls on top! Prices have gone up up in recent years and they have strange opening hours. You can order a cake be prepared to pick it up at an inconvenient time. Since the move (ok it has been a few years already) to the new premises the refit looks much nicer and now you can sit and have a slice and a coffee.

This review is for Royal Copenhagen Ice Creamery & Dessert Bar, Glenelg SA

Copenhagen is my favourite of the ice cream shops in jetty road, Glenelg. A good range of flavours to choose from, nice freshly made wafer cones and a small selection of toppings (a couple of fudges, nuts, 'hundreds and thousands' and chocolate prickles). Ask for cream on top so that the toppings will stick! I like to stand in the shop to eat the first round of toppings, then load up a second round and then go for a stroll towards the jetty. It is the stuff of good beach side memories :-)

This review is for Vietnam Restaurant, Pennington SA

The innovatively (not) named "Vietnam restaurant" is an Adelaide classic. A family run affair with the closely held secrets of a traditional family cook. It is showing its age for sure, the decor is very retro and tables are crammed in together but I think it adds to its rustic appeal. As they say in Asia, you avoid the 'pretty' restaurants because most of the time the food is rubbish! The food here is anything but. You will experience high quality authentic cuisine that has the obvious touch of a master in the kitchen – but the caveat is - provided you know what to order! Being an Asian restaurant they try to cater for everybody with a thousand versions of everything - nobody can do this well resulting in a high chance of a bad experience for the novice diner (frankly I wish they would just stick to the 20 specials!). If you go for the house specials you will be well rewarded. These are miles above the remainder of the menu. It helps to know a local who knows what to order, or look around at what the majority of the others are ordering...or ask the boss - the old guy who wonders around the tables periodically for a recommendation. Popular dishes seem to be – and also my favourites are BBQ quails - one bird per person. Because you won't be able to stop after just one half! Next would be the BBQ mice pork balls and/or sugarcane minced prawn. Both come with rice paper, a selection of fresh herbs/greens, some super yummy homemade sweet peanut sauce (the secret is in the sauce!) and a hot bowl of water. You need to hand wrap them yourself, which great fun too! A past favourite was the combination rice hot pot but I feel it has gone has gone hill down a bit in recent years as they don't appear to fire the ingredients inside the pot like they did in the past (thus loosing the yummy crispy layer at the bottom). As others have commented service can be lacking in busy times so be sure to order drinks in advance. Bookings are essential even on weeknights. Which shows its popularity and yes parking can be a problem on the extra busy nights. Last time I went there a few months ago there was a vacant block of land opposite that people seem to use for parking, otherwise it may be a little walk -it wont kill you. They also have a take-way service. If ordering take way a tip is to ask them to separately pack multiple orders of mice BBQ balls and/or minced sugarcane pawns otherwise they often only give you one lot of veg, and thus you end up running out! The price has also gone up in recent years above what you normally expect for an Asian establishment, but the quality is well worth it - and their customers obviously agree with the full house on many nights of the week. Overall a must visit restaurant in Adelaide, to which I bring all my out-of-town visitors.

This review is for Cold Rock Ice Creamery, North Adelaide SA

A good experience every time. Cheerful teens behind the counter .There are thousands of possible combinations of ice cream and mix-ins (additives such as gummy sweets, fruit, fizzies, biscuits etc) you can order. It is not the cheapest but the quality of the ice-cream is well worth the little extra. It doesn't leave an oily after taste like some can. The mix-ins are also a lot of fun. Rack your brains for the oddest combinations you can think of and have a go. Take at least two flavours of ice-ream and two mix-ins. I personally like a contrast of 'sweet' and 'acidic' ingredients e.g. a fruit and a tim tam to get a nice alternating taste sensation :-)

This review is for Rite Price Grocery Clearance Store, Prospect SA

verified email - 25 Nov 2010

I have shopped there reasonably often over a period of 2 years (prospect store) 2008-09, less so in 2010. The prices are cheap and the cashiers are friendly. You need to be aware that this is a 'clearance' store - but there is a difference between near to date and past date! so watch for 'out of date' items as there are many of those. Not sure about the legality of it... however use common sense to avoid things that easily go stale or off such as anything with nuts in it. other things such as sauces, cans, sweets, etc tend to last long after due dates so these are much safer bets. they also stock cheese, some of which is over date, but that is ok for most cheese it improves with age :-P a tip: you don't need to buy multiple of a given item to get the discount price (as suggested by most of the price labels). 1 item will be a fraction of the label price e.g the label may say 4 for 2$, but if you just buy one then it will be 50c. Buy one first, try it and go back for more if it turns out ok! I would recommend them for the budget shopper who has their brain switched on and flexible working hours. You will find the trading hours are not convenient if you work full time. Now that I work full time I am not able to get there often. It is a pity they didn't open on Saturday or one or two days after 5pm. Overall worth a go :-)
