This review is for Armadale Family Clinic, Armadale VIC

I'm afraid that my experience with Malvern Family & Women's Clinic hasn't been quite as good as the other reviews here. While the service was great (a text to remind me of my appointment, a very nice nurse who took my details), the doctor wasn't so helpful.

She disregarded the information that I gave her and ordered a test to be done for a condition that I already knew and told her wasn't the problem. When I returned for my follow-up visit, the only advice I got was that nothing was wrong with me. I wasn't offered further help or even medication to help with the symptoms that I was suffering from.

As you may guess, this left me a little upset. At least it meant that I had to find a different doctor (which I did) who would help me (which she has!).

I love frozen yoghurt and have been sorely deprived here in Melbourne, so I was thrilled when Cacao Green opened up! All of the flavours are delicious (the green tea is really well balanced and the strawberry actually tastes like- strawberries!), and if you're hungry, the parfaits are excellent.

There's more on the menu than frozen yoghurt, but to be honest, I've been a little...distracted. I'm sure that when the weather cools down, I'll try those delicious looking waffles!

This review is for Okonomi-Ju, Melbourne VIC

verified email - 01 Apr 2011

I usually have lunch in the city with my little brother at least once a week, so we are constantly on the lookout for new places to try. We both love Japanese food, so we were thrilled to find Okonomi-Ju.

Set under the rail bridge, Okonomi-Ju is a fun if noisy eating experience, and the fact that the food is top notch just makes it even better. The owners are from Osaka, so the must-try on the menu is the Okonomiyaki, a savoury Japanese pancake (sometimes described as a Japanese Pizza) made with flour, egg, dashi stock and cabbage, topped with your choice of pork, seafood, seafood and pork, calamari or tofu as well as Japanese mayonaise and a special house-made Okonomiyaki sauce. We've had a few dismal versions in Melbourne, so we don't hesitate to say that this is the best okonomiyaki that we've had so far here.

The rest of the menu is small, but perfectly formed. The croquettes are made of potatoes and deliciously sweet vegetables like peas and corn, shaggily coated with panko and fried to a delicious golden brown. The more adventurous will want to try the takoyaki, balls of batter-fried octopus which are crisp on the outside and soft on the inside with a deliciously tender piece of octopus in the centre.

I could talk more about how great it is, but I think this is most telling - after we told my partner about the lunch that we'd had there, he insisted that we should have dinner there so that he could try it too. If you call ahead, you can simply swing by to pick your meal up (though parking in the area can be iffy).

I really love Okononomi-Ju - it's fantastic food made and served with pride and passion, and I would dearly love for more people to know about it and try some authentic Japanese street and home-style food!

This review is for Trunk Diner, Melbourne VIC

verified email - 01 Apr 2011

Ever-ready to find a nice lunch location, I read about Trunk Diner in one of the newspapers. Despite the review, which wasn't terribly well written, I filed Trunk Diner away in my mind as a potential lunch location.

It wasn't long before my brother and I decided that lunch out would be nice, so off to Trunk it was. Trunk Diner is actually housed in a plastic-sided addition to a refurbished synagogue, so be sure that you enter where the sandwich board says Diner, not through the gates of the restaurant proper (though I don't imagine that it makes a difference as the two seem to share the garden space happily).

I wouldn't call the food at Trunk Diner real diner food, more a refined expression of the diner spirit. Servings are small (but satisfying), like the Wagyu burger served on a brioche roll. I thought I was sick of the whole Wagyu burger fad, but this juicy, medium-rare burger made me think that maybe there was something to all this fuss after all...

The Cuban sandwich is also excellent - made with a shatteringly crisp baguette rather than the traditional Cubano roll that you'd find in Miami. What's not to like about delicious pulled pork, cheese and chipotle mayonaise?

The only mar on the entire experience was the lengthy wait to service. There were three staff waiting on the 5 or 6 tables inside, plus the people who chose to sit outside. It was 15 minutes before our order was taken, a further 15 before our drinks arrived and 20 more for our food. By then, we were almost worried that my brother would be late back to school, and indeed, one table had enough of the waiting and elected to take their food away, presumably to eat back at their offices. Hopefully, this was a bit of a hiccup rather than a regular occurrence, though it'll take a few more trips there to see if this is the case.

Not that this is a bad thing, of course, I've already decided what I'm having next time...

This review is for Mamasita, Melbourne VIC

verified email - 01 Apr 2011

Mamasita is one of those places I keep reading and hearing about, but just haven't had the chance to visit. The right occasion finally presented itself last night. Knowing that they don't take bookings, I turned up at about 5.40 as our advance party to secure a place on the waitlist. The restaurant was already pretty full and the bar packed, I was told that we could have a table at 7 or 7.30, which suited us anyway as one of our party finishes work later.

Imagine our surprise then, when we got a call at 6.30 saying that our table would be ready in 5 minutes! Other than the fact that my friend and I had to chug down the drinks that we'd just started on and give up our coveted lounge seats at Bar Lourinha, we were pretty thrilled and hurried back over to Mamasita.

By now, the restaurant was truly buzzing. The space is small and noisy, and there's a certain level of shouting that has to happen for everyone to hear each other. However, given that we were so busy stuffing our faces full of food, this wasn't so bad.

The food - what can I say - each dish was delicious, and a good reflection of Mexican food. Don't expect Old El Paso-style meals here, the food is fresh, well thought out and tasty. Tortillas, whether corn or wheat, and beans are the stars of many dishes. I especially recommend the tostaditas - little two-bite sized deep fried corn tortillas piled high with delicious toppings like chicken and avocado or slow-cooked pork. And of course, the grilled corn is a highlight and must-have.

In all, we had a great evening, and other than the slight inconvenience of not being able to book ahead, I thoroughly recommend Mamasita for a fun night out with friends!

This review is for Tempura Hajime, South Melbourne VIC

Let's talk about how much I love this place. I adore Japanese food, and have been lucky to eat at many excellent Japanese restaurants around the world (though, sadly not in Japan itself).

I've been here twice now, and completely agree with another reviewer that it's all about the food. Each morsel is absolutely delicious, having been carefully selected, prepared and cooked by the chef.

The menu changes with the seasons - our most recent outing in December included sweet, succulent summer corn, carefully cut from the cob, battered lightly and fried. Simply speaking, it is a demonstration of the magic that can happen when simple ingredients are treated with the utmost care.

The service is also excellent - naturally, formal and deferent in the way that only the Japanese can do, but the staff are also not above the occasional informal Japanese lesson.

To be honest, I'm slightly embarrassed by all of my blather about this little restaurant tucked away in a South Melbourne office building. But I think it's telling that each time we go, all we can talk about for days after is how incredible the meal was.

All in all, this is my go-to when I want to treat myself to a true experience.

This review is for Sustain Health, South Melbourne VIC

I've been coming to Sustain Health since my chiropractor joined them, and the service is great! They are always pleasant on the phone and in person, and I really appreciate the texts I get the day before my appointments as a reminder.

While I've never tried the Chinese medicine or accupuncture side of things, I do wholeheartedly recommend WoonJee for chiropractic treatment and Stella for massages. Between them, they take care of my endless gamut of neck, shoulder and back problems with stunning efficiency - without them, I'd be like the Hunchback of Notre Dame!

Approximate cost: $55 for chiro, 80 for an hour massage

This review is for Fragile Removals & Storage, Dandenong South VIC

verified email - 07 May 2010

I have to say that I agree with the previous reviewer - we used Fragile for our move two weeks ago, and everything was excellent. Booking was quick and easy, they called the Saturday before to confirm the time, Darren and Colin were quick, efficient and didn't complain even once about the massive volume of stuff we have.

We did get charged for tape and bubble-wrap, but frankly, this was probably our fault for not wrapping things as securely as we should've. We were asked if we'd mind if they bubble-wrapped things, and while no charge was discussed, we fully expected to pay for it.

There was also no charge for travel time or any sort of depot charge, which we really liked especially as the two venues are on opposite sides of the city.

The only criticism I can offer is that they were late - our projected 1pm start turned into a 2.20 start, but to their credit, they did call before 1 to let us know that they were running half an hour late, then again at about quarter to two to apologise and let us know what time to expect them.

All in all, the service was professional and I was very happy with them. Though I don't ever ever EVER want to move again, at least we'll know who to call!

This review is for Let Us Do It 4 U - Residential & Small Office Cleaning, Moorabbin VIC

Can I talk about how fantastic Sandra and Barbara are? I found them on WOMOW after I found out that the cleaner we used last time for our end-of-lease clean no longer does one-off cleans.

Sandra was so easy to deal with on email, always quick to reply. She and Barbara did an incredible job cleaning our apartment, I don't think it's ever been that clean!

Frankly, the only downside of this is other people knowing what filth buckets we are. Bravo, Sandra and Barb, you deserve it!

I chanced upon Williamsons after an appointment on Chapel Street, and a happy find it was! The pies are delicious, and while I've not tried any of the large range of sweets they have, they look pretty good. Definitely a go-to for a good pie!
