I do not have a bad thing to say about this place. I was there the first week it opened and was amazed at the food and service. I have been back a number of times and they are still exceptional. The atmosphere in side is great. Great back drop music playing, but not too loud that you cant hear yourself think. Have been there with a group of 6 and it still works. Be confident in letting they waitor pick your food for you or getting some recommendtaions. You cant go wrong. The only problem is getting a table. We usually get put on their "wait list". We just go downstairs for a drink and they call us on the mobile when a table is ready.

Chin Chin has become our talk of the town for us foodies in the past year. My experience at Chin Chin is good but not overwhelming. Let me explain, first off you can not book for a table here; so, you might have to wait for an hour to get a table if you go after 6pm (even on Monday evening) But once you get in you will feed the energy inside, this place has such a great atmosphere and you can see their open kitchen as well. The food here is all about South East Asian cuisine especially Thai. Me and my wife like the food but not fall in love with it because we are big fans of Thai food BUT (a big but) by all means taste wise is really good, it's just suitable for anybody, not too spicy, not too hot it's just right. Service could lack a little bit when this place is pumped, which they always are. Price wise, most meals are under $20 but portion size could be a little bit bigger. To sum up, Try this place out for your culinary experience and see what's up with Melbourne trend this day. But to look for something authentic Thai here, you'd better off going elsewhere.

This place is amazing! Even though it is wildly popular, the service is excellent and every bite of your food is delicious. We will definitely go again, looking forward to it!

I must say, one of the best casual dining experiences I've had in a very long time. We went on s Saturday afternoon for a late lunch and cocktails. They made beautiful Berry Mojitos all round for us and then we began to share beautiful plates of Mordern Asian food. We started with the Kingfish sashimi, which is honestly the best kingfish sashimi I have ever had. We then shared a gorgeous salad of pork belly, barramuni and greens, that we refreshing and delcious. We had a variety of little dishes to follow, including the DIY pork rolls and chilli chicken wings. I would definately go back again and again. The staff were georgeous and friendly and the service was prompt.

Came here for a casual lunch last weekend and the four of us were lucky to be seated at a table right away! The food was delicious - the pork rolls to start with were amazing. We also ordered a fantastic orange curry with a whitebait omelette and satay chicken which, though slightly different to the usual Malaysian flavours I've been brought up with, was also good. Waiters were extremely friendly and the fun decor finished the dining experience rather nicely!

Had the most amazing meal at ChinChin. We did the feed me option for $66 per person and it was fantastic. The food is to die for. Beef that melts in your mouth, amazing pulled pork, the most divine pork and barramundi salad.

Hi, just saw your comment about the "Feed Me" option at Chin Chin. How many dishes/"courses" are there? Just looking for a place to have a get together but $66/person sounds a bit steep... Thanks!

Hi Ohthee.

As many dishes as you can eat. Usually its around 5 savoury and a desert or you can do lots of small plates. They just keep bringing out different ones until you are ready for your sweet. Well worth it considering that one main meal is $30 and the servings are huge. Go for the twice cooked Beef, it won't disappoint.

Went here on a Wednesday night with a friend. I got there pretty early (around 5:15pm) and by 5:45 pm it started getting really packed! Unfortunately you can't make bookings for anything less than 12 people, so be prepared to line up and wait, though it is well worth it!

There was only 2 of us, so that made it a lot easier. The tables were all full so we were seated at the bar, which was fine - we had plenty of room to eat. I would describe the cuisine at Chin Chin as “Modern Asian”; they play on Asian flavours but add a twist to it. The dishes on the menu are made to share, so going with a bigger group, I believe, would really enhance the experience because you get to try more dishes.

My friend's been here before, so I let her order. We started off with thinly sliced King Fish sashimi in a lemon and coriander dressing - it was absolutely divine, the perfect starter. We also ordered the fried Barramundi tossed in green apple and coriander salad with sweet caramelised Pork Belly on the side. The sweet pork belly helps to balance out the crispiness of the barramundi and sourness of the apple salad - a perfect combination! My favourite dish of the night. Our final main was Rice Paper Rolls with shredded pork, bean shoots, light green salad and xo-style dipping sauce. You make the paper rolls yourself, so you can put as much of each ingredient as you'd like. The rice paper wrap itself was a lot different, thicker than normal rice paper rolls but still very soft and tasty.

For dessert we order the dessert platter, which had 3 types of “desserts on the plate”: Chili-caramelised popcorn, coconut jelly circles and cinnamon pound cakes. The chili-caramalised popcorn was tasty but the jelly and cinnamon cakes weren't anything special. The pound cakes seemed a bit stale to be honest.

Service was great from the moment we sat down. Our waiter was attentive but not too “in your face”. Our starter came out pretty quickly after we ordered and all our mains came out the same time. I'd definitely recommend this restaurant to others and I don't think people should be put off by the “no booking” policy. The food is well worth the wait! If you get there around 5-5:30pm, getting a table shouldn't be a problem. Around 6pm, it starts getting really full and you can expect to wait around 30mins - 1 hr for a table.

Approximate cost: $14 dish, $30/person

Came here again a couple of weeks back. Wait was terrible... but after I have food in my belly I'm pretty happy.

Definitely recommend the banana and roti bread with condensed milk for dessert. It's so simple, but ridiculously tasty!

Hi Ohthee, while this place sounded quite interesting, we were disappointed to read that they do not permit bookings for under twelve people. Although we tend to avoid desserts from such establishments, the â??dessert platterâ?? you mentioned sounds appealing, excluding the stale cake! Thanks for the heads-up! Reeces

This place is fantastic, there is always a wait to be seated but it well worth the wait. The food is WOW and the chef is quite well known Ben Cooper. You will not be disappointed and the prices are great vs the quality of food.

I have given Chin Chin many chances to redeem themselves (3 in fact!) and I really want to like this place but it always misses the mark based on TASTE! The flavours in most of their dishes are not balanced and tend to be very salty. I don't understand why it is always so busy. The menu looks impressive but I am consistently disappointed.
To be fair of the 3 times I have dined there, I enjoyed 1 or 2 out of the minimum 5 dishes we have ordered but this is not good enough.
The service is great and they are attentive and 'get' the customer and anticipate.
Have made comments to the waitstaff but the taste still does not improve.
Would love to come back to bring my Melbourne visitors but at the moment, Chin Chin doesn't cut it for me plus there are way too many places that are better buddy.

Hi BlushingBride, thanks for your comments. The service element sounds impressive, something many other restaurants should take note of. Sorry to hear that the food has been sub par and overly salty. Having read your review, we will certainly take the time to read reviews (on other websites) before planning a visit. Regards, Reeces

This place is the best. Asian food Thai styled cooked by Ben Cooper has held many top gigs such as nobu, rock pool, st arli.
Pricing great for such quality.
