Love this place - always come here for a quick coffee. The staff are so friendly and they give a cute little cookie with the coffee too :)

A pleasant cafe. Good for a casual bite, with fairly middle of the road menu options, reliably executed if not superbly, and high st decor.

Good restaurant. Food and coffee is spot on, heaps of chairs and tables and service is super nice and friendly here too. Will be back when I'm in the area next!

We were looking for somewhere to go after spending the morning at the Camberwell Market, and the Short Black Cafe and Restaurant was literally bursting at the seams. We were seated all the way at the back of the restaurant and our orders were taken quickly.

The soy hot chocolate I had was on the small side. It was lovely and rich, but not a great size for the price it cost - especially with the surcharge for the soy milk. I indulged in the Salmon Stack and was rewarded with a really tasty brunch. On the small serving side it was just enough to fill me up though. Speedy service and a tasty meal provided a satisfying finish to my day out at Camberwell.

Approximate cost: $19.9

Stopped in here for a hot chocolate before a movie at the Rivoli. The ordering, as well as the receiving of the beverage, was quite slow. However, the drink itself was quite nice.

We also looked at the menu, and the prices looked quite good, as did the servings on the other tables!!

Approximate cost: $19.00

This place is consistent - that's what I like about it. They know me and they know what I like and they continue to deliver it. Because I am such a regular, I know that the food quality can vary from average to very nice - this this is wholly dependent on which chef is working that day. The place is large, so a nice ambience is difficult to achieve - however, when you arrive here first thing on a cold morning, the aroma of the wood fired oven is very pleasant indeed. The service can sometimes be a little inattentive - but again, this is usually first thing in the morning. Pricing is on the high side, but what you would expect to pay in this area. I'll keep going as long as they keep doing what I like. Coffee is good.

I used to dine here once a week and always found the food tasty and service friendly. Generally the prices are very good and they are more than happy to split the bill which is great!!

There was one night last year when I went with a large group of friends, they all received and finished their meals but I never received mine. I asked early on and was told it was on the way. It turned out there was some confusion and my meal was delivered to another table who had ordered the same thing. I was offered a meal on the house as compensation however by this stage I'd lost my appetite and as all my friends had finished their meals I couldn't see the point.

I have been back once since then and made it through over half my meal before I came across some broken glass in it. I alerted the manager who apologized and said he'd take care of it. When we went to pay I was charged full price for my meal. I queried this and the manager was called over again. I was asked what I expected him to do (which I thought was quite rude considering I almost swallowed glass!) and when I said I didn't think I should have to pay he offered to reduce the cost by half, then he came up with an amount for me to pay which was more than half!

I couldn't be bothered arguing any further but I have never returned and have told everyone I know about this experience and now I am sharing it here.

The Short Black is one of the nicest places to eat in camberwell. Far from your dingy cafe, it's large and clean, but with a lovely atmosphere. Great for coffee or a meal. Go for the scone, it's massive and super cheap.

We chose 4 different dishes from the All day breakfast menu - all were very tasty with fresh ingredients and generous servings. We had BLT on dark rye - great but difficult to eat with the 3 layers; Jumping beans - excellent; Vege pizza - excellent and very large! The only downside was my friend who had the smoked salmon and poached eggs found a hair in her food. We told the waiter who when he saw it on the side of her plate tried to suggest that it had blown in thru the door! No discount was offered. They did offer to replace it but by then she was nearly finished so couldn't be bothered making a fuss. I'd have given the place a higher ratng if the waiter had apologised but he didn't seem to care.

Approximate cost: $15.00
