This review is for Jintana Thai Restaurant, Doncaster East VIC

Great local restaurant with well priced, delicious food.

Jintana rushes about like a mad woman - seating customers, taking table and phone orders, cooking, serving and taking payment, all while smiling and willing to have a laugh with customers. She is amazing and so is her food. She'll probably try to talk you out of ordering the coconut rice because it's not traditional to have with your main meal, but get it anyway, it is delicious. The roti bread with satay sauce is a winner and I find it hard to go past the Don Thai Beef, even though there are plenty of other scrummy dishes on the menu.

There's not many parks out the front, but plenty just around the corner as part of the shopping complex near Safeway.

Highly recommend, in fact, writing this has made me decide to go there for dinner tonight!

This review is for Jorge Viota Hairdressing, Brunswick East VIC

Living in Donvale I don't tend to venture too far for a haircut, and ever since I returned to my natural colour over a year ago I haven't even been for a haircut (shh... I know it's naughty!) However the deal for Jorge Viota's salon on Living Social was too good to pass up so I went on a journey to Brunswick East.

My stylist was Ilaria and I couldn't be happier with my visit! I was made to feel so welcome on arrival and throughout my visit; we had a lovely chat but I was also given plenty of time to read magazines (something I reserve for salon visits and doctors surgeries). The coffee was delicious and presented beautifully - it's little things like that which make all the difference.

And my hair? My hair is amazing! There were no surprises either, Ilaria made sure I knew, before she started, that because of the length of my hair there would be an extra charge for the colour and also for the toner, which weren't included in the voucher. No worries, I'd read the fine print, but it's nice to be reminded.

I had balayage, cut and style. The colour is fantastic, I've never been so happy with colour application, the cut is spot on and the style prompted someone to come up to me in a bar that night just to say "you look phenomenal" - all thanks to Ilaria!

Thank you, I'm so happy with my hair and will definitely recommend you to everyone I see! :)

I used to use these guys years ago and was thrilled they still had my details on file. It was like catching up with old friends again. I went in with the idea of getting a wave put in, but left after having just a cut and treatment. Why? Because the team were wonderfully honest with me. Rather than saying 'no problem' and taking my money they talked about my wants, my lifestyle and hair history and explained that they couldn't guarantee the results due to the previous damage in the lengths of my hair. The ultimate decision was left to me, they didn't flat out refuse to do the work, but fully explained the situation and discussed it all with me at length. I appreciated this honesty and I'm glad I didn't go through with something that could have looked great or could have utterly ruined my hair. So instead I got a great cut, had a wonderful, relaxing treatment and head massage in their vibrating chairs, a couple of lattes and caught up on all the latest celebrity goss (yes, the magazines are current issues!) and left feeling wonderful and a part if the Quattro family. Highly recommend for anyone in the area!

This review is for Coldstream Brewery, Coldstream VIC

This was my first visit to the brewery and unfortunately, my last. The entire experience was a disappointment from the get go. It seemed as though out presence was an inconvenience to the staff. We were largely ignored upon arrival, vaguely handed some menus when we asked if we could sit outside. After about 20 minutes of being left alone we went back inside, and asked if we could have a seat inside. It took another 10 minutes before we were seated and another half hour before someone took our order. Thankfully we'd bought some drinks at the bar during one of our many waits as we hadn't been offered any, not even water. Another half hour and our starter was brought out (bread and dips), another half hour or so plus flagging down a staff member to ask where our main was, our pizza arrived.

So basically over three hours for bread & dips and one pizza, plus a drink we had to get ourselves from the bar. It wasn't even terribly busy and at no point was an apology made for all the waiting around.

On the plus side the cider was nice and refreshing on such a hot day - although I wasn't offered a pint, just given a glass of cider which isn't very enterprising.

I am all in favour of supporting local breweries but in this instance I'd recommend steering clear - buy Coldstream Brewery products if you see them in bars or stores but avoid the brewery unless you have hours to spare.

This review is for Hoyts Cinema Eastland, Ringwood VIC

I've been visiting Eastland for years (I'm talking the 1980s prior to the renovations!) and I still return on occasion to catch a movie with my family. Whilst the movies themselves are top notch entertainment, my last few visits have left me struggling to find a positive with the quality of service and cinema maintenance.

I agree with another reviewer in regards to the value for money with La Premiere tickets as soft drink and popcorn cup sizes have significantly shrunk over the years and it's a shame tea, coffee and hot chocolate aren't available anymore. Plus there's a high number of broken chairs which makes for interesting times when your neighbour moves and half your drink and food end up on the floor!

I've also had issues trying to book 3 tickets for La Premiere, I understand the seats are paired, but it's frustrating being unable to book online for individual or triple numbers; more frustrating when buying in person from the box office to find they've allocated 2 seats together & the 3rd separated by an aisle. The reason given? I didn't specify I wanted my seats together. Yup, for reals that's what their explanation was!!

More recently I was ignored by 2 different staff members who served the 'regular' line ahead of me waiting in the red carpet queue. I know this is a small gripe, but with the crazy price of a movie ticket and the extortionate candy bar prices, I find it ridiculous that Hoyts justify an online booking fee as paying for the privilege of a priority ticket collection service when this service doesn't actually happen (btw, this has happened to me before at Hoyts Melbourne Central - never happened at Village though!). Oh, and when I was finally called to a register and questioned the 'service' I didn't receive an apology, I was just told that everyone should be serving red carpet. Yep, that was it!

The one good thing about my latest visit was that they didn't try to push candy bar products/deals/upgrades on me... happy day for me but again, I suspect not the level of service Hoyts expect from their employees!!

My advice? Try Reading or Village (Doncaster is great now it's been renovated and doesn't look like a big screen in someone's garage anymore!) or buy in person at Eastland, take wet wipes if you're eating anything and BYO stable table for La Premiere - just to be safe!! ;)

Happy new year WOMOites!!

This review is for Sung's Kitchen, Melbourne VIC

verified email - 08 Nov 2012

Sungs Kitchen is hands down my favourite Chinese restaurant and it's the thing I miss most about moving out of the area (I miss it more than fresh groceries from Vic Market!)

I lived around the corner from Sungs for years but never tried them until a friend visited and told me he and his family were regulars there. I was hesitant at first because I tend to avoid restaurants with 'meal' fish tanks in them. It's just something i dont like. He made me try the Minister Spicy Wings and Spring Onion Pancake and I've been hooked ever since... I've also turned multiple friends and family into SOPancake addicts too! Possibly the best testament to how amazing the food is is that my mum, notorious onion hater, was made to try the SOPancake and is now hooked. Still doesn't like onions, but lurves the pancake!

I must confess I have only ever bought take-away, but I have never been disappointed. Living alone I was most impressed by their dinner boxes which came with rice; perfect for me because usually I have to buy a massive dish plus rice and I'm eating leftovers for days. The dinner box was enough just for 2 meals so it was perfect for me!

My favourites were the Mongolian beef (minus the mushrooms!) and the black pepper steak. It costs a little extra but it worth it for the sizeable pieces of oh-so-tender fillet steak. Oh I am drooling at the thought and it's only 7am!!

Admittedly the prices are a little higher than other establishments but it is worth it for the quality of meal and prompt service. I highly recommend you to try Sungs Kitchen - just make sure there's enough SOPancakes left for me!

With warmer weather approaching and some gorgeous new summer frocks in my wardrobe I decided it was time to look less like a fox & more like a FOX!! So after some extensive online research and weighing of options, I decided to try CF Salon.

I was first impressed by the ease of booking an appointment - all done online which I love and better yet, I was able to get the exact day and time I wanted at very late notice.

I was greeted by a friendly smile from a woman who was dealing with a customer on the phone. When the call ended she apologized for keeping me waiting, although there was no need as I had arrived early and really only waited a couple of minutes, and took me through to a private room.

Within half an hour I walked out a very satisfied customer having had a full leg & bikini wax, far less painful than I've experienced elsewhere in the past, and having had a great time chatting with Claire, my therapist.

I couldn't be happier to have accomplished summer legs on my lunch break and at a great price too! I will definitely be returning and recommend this salon to anyone in the Melbourne CBD area :)

This review is for National Zoo & Aquarium, Yarralumla ACT

verified email - 18 Sep 2012

It's amazing how many Canberra locals I have spoken to who were completely unaware they had a zoo & aquarium on their doorstep - let alone that it is one of, if not the best zoo I have been to... San Diego included!

I took my sister for her birthday this year (both of us BIG animal fans, especially felines) having bought her the Meet a Cheetah experience. Upon arrival we decided to make the most of our visit and bought behind the scenes passes for the sun bears as well (I was devastated to find out the red pandas were sold out for the weekend).

We hadn't been there very long when we heard roaring and we took off in search of the noise. That was the start of a day filled with big cats! I didnt realise until we were listening to the keeper talk at the lions that we could feed and have photos taken with various animals for the bargain price of $20.

There's so much more to see than we expected, and after planning our day around meeting various animals we ran out of time to visit the aquarium! Not that we don't have every intention of returning in the near future so there'll be time to see all the water dwelling critters then.

Aside from the thrill of getting up close and personal with such amazing animals, it's also wonderful that all the profit goes back to the animals and their welfare.

There are also zoo volunteers wandering around all day and they are a wealth of knowledge that you can tap into, so don't be shy, if you've got a question - or 50 - ask away!

This is a MUST DO so stick it on your bucket list :)

I used to dine here quite a bit but the last couple of visits have been quite disappointing so I wont be returning in a hurry.

It starts in the carpark which is very tight on space. Entering the premises isn't so bad in winter, however in the warmer months you have to walk past the smoking section which isn't ideal if, like me, you're a non smoker.

Once inside you're faced with a large, mostly open plan dining space, and depending on where you're seated you might be lucky enough to have a view of the pokies room!

The food is generally overpriced for the quality and standard of presentation which is unfortunately inconsistent and often below par. That said, my friend was greatly entertained upon discovering that the pastry on the top of my pie was rock hard and experimented with using it as a hat, frisbee, drumkit etc throughout the course of our meal!

If you're into quantity over quality then you will fare better here as the meals are quite substantial.

This review is for Yokohama Teppanyaki Japanese Restaurant, Glen Waverley VIC

verified email - 18 Sep 2012

A friend recommended this restaurant to me, though she had the Teppenyaki experience and I chose a la carte (not being a fan of seafood this is a better option for me!)

The food was fresh, well presented and tasty, although when asked I requested my beef cooked well done & I'm almost certain I heard it moo... The main thing that bothered me were the overly attentive waitresses. We were asked at least 10 times by different staff if we were ready to order and this was before we'd even opened our menus!

Despite that it was a pleasant evening and it's always fun to watch the Teppenyaki chefs do their thing - especially from a safe distance!
