Soul Mama's is a great Vegetarian Resteraunt with a romantic feel and a great view of the bay.. its a baymorie sort of affair where you choose from a variety of curries, pasta's and vegetables.. It's a good place for a date or a generally relaxed and enjoyable experience..

Great ambience, fantastic views. Good selection of vegetarian meals, both vegan and lacto-ovo. Competitive advantage is definitely the sereneity and surrounds of the restaurant, with outside balcony and views to the sea.

One of my most favorite places to eat. The atmosphere is very comfortable being near the beach with fabulous decor, and I've always found the service to be great, with delicious meals!!

Wow, what can I say. I REALLY loved their food. It seemed to me to have an African influence. Vegetarian food with such terrific flavours that you forget it's vegetarian and the wine list really complimented the food

I've been going to Soul Mama for several years, always for my friend's birthday. I moved away from Melbourne 5 years ago so I have a bit of a soft spot for going to certain places, and this is one of them, however...

The food is average. I'm not a vegetarian but my partner is and she does all the cooking. Let's just say I've been to MANY restaurants, vego or not, that have done a LOT better than Soul Mama in terms of the taste of the food.

I tend to always get 4-5 small servings of the different meals on offer, and usually only like 1 or 2 of them. I find many of them a bit bland. Several of my vegetarian friends find the same thing.

The dessert, which I usually pig out on at other places, has always been disappointing to me here. Last time I ordered an apple crumble with ice cream. It was $10 and I couldn't even eat it because it had so many seeds and nuts in it, and barely any apple. I just ate the ice cream.

I actually love the ambience of this place though. I ADORE the view. Even if you're not seated by a window, you can still see out easily. The walls are all windows for most of the eating areas. You can see all the way out to sea and also look down on St Kilda below.

I also like the atmosphere inside the restaurant itself. I don't mind the fact people are often bustling around you.

I had heard many great things about this place from friends and was eager to give it a try.

We were seated in the middle of the restaurant where throughout the night people were walking past us constantly. The staff are friendly and willing to help out with the menu for first timers. The restaurant runs on a ticket system. You queue at the buffet and exchange your pre-purchased ticket for a meal of your choice. The line to the buffet can get rather long though.

Although the portion sizes of the food are large, I was rather disappointed with the taste. There is just something unappealing about food that is sitting in a bain marie all night.

The dessert was probably the most appealing part of my dining experience. There are a variety of appetizing cakes on offer.

Don't believe the hype surrounding this place. It's really rather average. The restaurant has a great view which can be peacefully enjoyed if you are lucky enough to get a window seat.

Went to Soul Mama for a birthday celebration, so the group included friends who had never eaten at a Vegetarian Restaurant. The non vegetarians were pleasantly surprised at the vast variety of food available. They also found their meal very tasty. Most of the food was delicious although I seemed to have gotten the last of a mushroom pasta in the bain marie, so it was chewy and quite dried out.
It is very noisy so it is hard to hear the waitress. This was not great because some of our table missed out on hearing the various options available and therefore missed out on ordering the lunchtime special deal. If you know how their dish ordering system works it is great, however for newcomers it can be quite confusing.
Dessert was divine.
The views were great and was even entertained by a pod of dolphins frolicking close to shore.

A different concept in eating out. You order the size bowl you want (3, 4 or 5 choices), then go to the staffed buffet and choose from the ever-changing menu. The options depend on what is in season, so it is a different experience each time. It can be a bit noisy if the place is busy, but there are fantastic views over the bay.

Soul Mama is a very cool place, looks awesome, healthy fit staff. The food is good, it is a kind of buffet - bain marie so it didn't knock my socks off -- but it is all veg, its very modern and fun to hang out in. Deserves loyalty and heaps of respect.

This is the best vegetarian restaurant I have been to in Melbourne. Food is just amazing. Tastes great and healthy. Amazing variety. They don't appear to use too much oil or salt in there food. Has a home cooked flavour to it. And the view overlooking st kilda beach is great. I go there all the time. And on top of all that isn't too expensive.

Approximate cost: $17
