Sushi is pretty decent, not one of the best. The rice dishes are also pretty average. One of the dish I usually order is the oyako don.
This is my favourite sushi place in the CBD. Very good quality fish, expertly sliced, and at amazingly low prices. I've paid much more elsewhere for sashimi which hasn't been as good as this. They also have a very good variety of things in their sushi packs. My favourite packs are the Salmon Deluxe Bento and the Yoyogi Roll.
Their non-sushi dishes are pretty good too. I can't remember what the proper names are of the dishes I've tried, and there's no online menu, but I've tried a steak dish with rice, the teriyaki chicken, and a couple of noodle dishes, and all were excellent. The tempura and gyoza were pretty good too - not the very best I've ever had, but certainly more than acceptable at the price.
A small nitpick - they don't seem to grasp the concept of sharing, which is unusual for an Asian restaurant. I tell them when I order that my companion and I will be sharing all the dishes, yet the dishes they bring out don't naturally lend themselves to sharing, and the wait staff don't think to bring any extra plates. I invariably have to ask for an extra plate.
Service also tends to be fairly abrupt. Not rude, exactly - more a noisy, slam-the-plates-down-on-the-table sort of abruptness. I'm sure there's no intention to be rude; it's merely a no-frills sort of service. Maybe I notice it more because it's such a contrast to the quiet, gentle sort of service I'm accustomed to at other Japanese places I visit, such as Yamabuki in Williamstown and Shinjuku in Brunswick. Then again, at Yoyogi's prices it would be asking a bit much to expect five-star service. The food more than makes up for the lack of refinement in the service.
The atmosphere can be quite chaotic at busy times, but amazingly, they've never made a mistake with my order, and they manage to get everything on the table surprisingly quickly. I often eat here if I'm in need of a very quick meal before going to a show. I've never been late for the show, and I've never been disappointed by the meal.
I've never eaten in at Yoyogi before but I do love their brown rice sushi rolls which I'll grab for a quick takeaway lunch when I can. I'll have to try eating in next time!
Very large sushi rolls and a great price. $2 each!
They have the best tuna rolls I've ever had.
Their sea weed is fresh, not chewy and hard to bit into.
Approximate cost: $2
Great place for cheap and easy meal. Very fresh ingrdients. Love the bento. It's a no fuss place, so the service and decor are consistent with the price
Approximate cost: $10
love coming to this place! lots of food for a good price and a cosy restaurant to sit in.
will definitely dine again A+
ordered a bento, was great to get to taste a few different things and very tasty! service was ok, not overly friendly but i think thats a cultural thing.
food came out quickly even tho was very busy!
I love this place. The food here is awesome. Huge meals for relatively cheap prices. Heaps of different dishes to choose from. When ever I go to Melbourne i always make sure i stop by for a feed
I've only ever bought the sushi from Yoyogi, but each time it's fresh, tasty and usually there are special deals available e.g. 4 rolls for $8. The staff are enthusiastic and I would definitely go back again.
Approximate cost: $2.20
I've been to Yoyogi for a few years now. The service there is always terrible but I can't help but like the noodles they serve there. I love the yasai ramen and i always order it there. The service is terrible as I have asked for water a few times and never got them. The food takes long to come out even though there are not many customers and also the service staff are rude
Approximate cost: $8.50
I've been trying to eat more vegetarian food recently. Yoyogi isn't a vegetarian restaurant but has quite a few nice vegetarian dishes such as the buck wheat noodles with wild vegetables and the eggplant entree. Some other fellow raters gave them pretty bad scores for their service but I found the staff there to be quite quick and helpful (not sure if my good looks play a part =P.. jokes!). I wouldn't call myself a Japanese food expert but the food here suits me perfectly. The price is very reasonable as well. Lunch or dinner, this place will most likely offer the value for money. Since I study around there, I will most likely visit the place once or twice a week and try more dishes.
The food doesn't taste authentic at all with poor customer service. Used to go back in high school because it was a cheap popular choice for dinner back in the days. Once had yakitori chickens delivered to me when they were still half raw. Never went back since.
This is a cheap eat Japanese restaurant. The food is good value for the price but don't expect grand decor or great service. People just do their job and serve the food. Otherwise it's good value decent Japanese food for a quick feed.
i love yoygi, ive been there countless times, i always pretty much order the same thing all the time which is C4 tonkatsu ramen, which is always the same standard everytime, theyre quick & i can never get enough
Approximate cost: $9.00
Ive been here a couple of times mostly because im looking for a cheap eat. The service is definitle appaling, sometimes i feel as if the staff are just ignoring me. But the food is not too bad so i will come back.
Approximate cost: $7-10
I have been here one time, but never want to go back.
Because I couldn't taste Japanese food, it was too strong Chinese food.
Also service is no good, the staff attended so late for us.
Yoyogi is a famous place in Japan, but not in Melbourne.
Approximate cost: $12
You know - with the number of Japanese eateries and sushi places around Melbourne-town, it's easy to make a wrong choice. No chance of that at Yoyogi though - the sushi is great value for money here, with sizes that would actually be able to fill you up. There is also a filling selection found here which is quite rare to find at other places (soft-shell crab roll comes to mind).
If you're after something fast, the home made Dim Sims are exceptional value at $0.80 each and it only takes a few to get you full.
Best of all though is the hot food menu which offers exceptionally large portions of great tasting Japanese fair at insanely low prices. Take for example the Yikunku Don (fried beef with rice), at approximately $8, the serving is so large that you'd think a whole cow went into it. The chicken curry is also exceptional value at only $6 or so.
While the service may not be flash, and the upstairs seating somewhat stuffy during the warmer months, once you've tried this place, it'll sure to become an easy choice for regular eating when you're in town.
Approximate cost: $7
