Kafe Krave is a lovely little cafe with excellent coffee. They provide a range of beverages and food options, ranging from cakes to paninis, are generally fairly tasty. They serve campos coffee, which gives it an extra little tick of approval in my books. I haven't tried a proper sit-down meal here, so I can't really comment too much on those - but the take-away options are generally lovely.
This little kebab shop does kebabs and pizza, mainly. While the food is fine enough, the service definitely leaves something to be desired. Once, when we went in, the girl dropped the kebab on the ground, and looked to see if we saw before offering to make a new one to replace it. It doesn't exactly imbue a huge amount of confidence in you to see that.
This place sells the BEST CHIPS IN BRISBANE. I'm not even kidding. A large chips and a medium gravy is our regular order for this place. It's really all you need. The chips are perfectly cooked every time - nice and crispy on the outside, and soft and squishy on the inside, with lots of little crunchy bits. Perfect, perfect, perfect chips.
Overall, as a local fish and chip shop, this isn't too bad. I like the snack pack with calamari and chips. However, although the chips are nicely seasoned and there are some cheaper options on the menu, for what it is, it can be a little expensive. Overall, not terrible value, but it doesn't exactly make it onto the list of places I particularly recommend.
This is a lovely little gyoza bar, at a convenient location in Fortitude Valley. The place is always full of people - it's a very popular spot, it would seem. Sometimes hard to find a spot. The staff are lovely, and the place always has an energetic vibe. The food is tasty - I highly recommend the duck gyoza. Deeeelicious.
Ok... these pizzas are HUGE and absolutely exceptional value for money. My favourite so far is the fiery Indian pizza. The pizzas range in price from about $10 up to $18, and there are a variety of sides to choose from. One pizza (they are New York style, so thin base and big) would easily feed three hungry people. Soul Pizza also does regular specials, which you can follow on their Facebook fan page. They do deliver, but they have a very limited delivery range. This place is serious value for money. Highly recommended.
Approximate cost: $10 - $18
If you want a giant slice of pizza, this is the place to go to. With long opening hours and a convenient location, it's a perfect place to pick up a little something to eat after a night out, before heading home. The prices aren't what I'd call exceptionally reasonable, but the convenience factor is definitely good. I've never had bad service, so that is a plus too.
The Mana Bar is a unique experience, and one I've only had the pleasure of coming across in a couple of places (the other being in Nakano, in Japan). The place is set up with a number of gaming consoles where you can enjoy a drink and a game with a few friends. The drinks are a little expensive, but there are a variety of unique gaming-themed cocktails to choose from. The bar regularly hosts events, such as trivia. The bar is not very large, but it does seem to be a rather social space. Be warned though - sometimes the bar is closed for private events. It is best to follow them on their Facebook page if you want prior notification as to these times. Because of these sporadic closings, it can get a little annoying if you've organized to meet there, and suddenly show up to see that it has been closed out for a private event.
The Normanby is great if you particularly like the sports crowd or a bunch of popped collars surrounding you... but in reality, that just isn't my scene. The drinks are overpriced, the food is standard pub fare, and the desserts cost more than bears thinking for the tiny portions of substandard food. They occasionally have a deal worth peeking in there for, but the majority of the time, I'd generally avoid the place. It works for some, just not for me.
I've been there a few times for drinks, and a few times for meals. Overall, it's pretty standard pub fare - the steaks aren't bad, and the appetizers are tasty. The prices are about standard for pub food, for the most part, and the service staff are nice enough, so overall, not bad. Just nothing really to write home about either.
