Sambal sotong in a cardboard container

Very disappointed today with my take away food spilling everywhere. They should not put a food with a sauce in a cardboard container as it end up destroying the container and spilling everywhere.

Great authentic Malay food for a reasonable price. Make sure you get on time as there can be a waiting list to get a table.

Tasty Malaysian food in the city. Now an iconic destination. Sometimes the queue stretches all the way around the corner. Take some good friends so you can chat while you wait in the queue.

This place has been a favourite for many years. I've visited this place several times and I'm never dissapointed. Roti planta (buttery roti), rojak salad and roti tisu (dessert roti) are my personal favourites. The roti is to die for and is excellent value for money ($6-11). There are very long queues here - luckily there is also a Chatswood location which is larger and has the exact same dishes with the same high quality!

Very affordable and the food is very nice. You have to wait on a long queue though. People start to fall in line as early as 30 minutes before the opening

There is always a queue outside Mamak even on a weekday. The food is authentic Malaysian/Chinese, it's great to watch the Chefs making the roti at the front of restaurant while waiting. Must try their Tea Tarek for takeaway if you want a quick bite/drink.

Malaysian restaurant near china town. More people raving about this, also when you pass by the area you can see a lot of people patiently waiting to have a table. So , I thought it must be good!

But when I tried one of my Malaysian fave dish chicken satay, I was disappointed. My husband tried Nasilemak and it's just fine nothing special. So I think it's a bit overrated.

Mamak is one of the best Malaysian restaurants in the city. This place gets really busy, so you'll have to be prepared to wait. The roti and side sauces are delicious and I really like their fried chicken too.

It's open to the piddling hours of the morning is it's a good place to go if you're out of the house at 1am. I go there for the dessert which is great.
It's almost always packed so it's noisy but it's cheap and tasty so it's worthwhile overall.

Good Malaysian food, quick service, friendly staff.

Worth the wait? Maybe...depending on your taste.

My opinion is they have good selection, food taste great and have tried the curry, roti bom dessert with ice cream, the drinks. However I think they charge too much for dessert especially or the entree.

There are other places to get Malaysian food in Chatswood or Sydney.

Have heard fave reviews about this Malaysian Restaurant so had to come and see what the fuss is about! My friend pre-warned me about coming at peak hour at this place has queue's miles long, must be a good thing! Arrived at 1.30pm , they had a queue there still, but about 6 people in front of us and we managed to get a table withing 15 minutes.

Upon walking in you see the staff hand rolling out the roti as through the glass window and it was intriguing to watch.

We ordered the Kari Ayam which was the chicken style curry served with potatoes and spices! It was indeed spicy. The chicken was moist and tender, the rice calmed the spiciness of the curry for me . It was about $11.50 and came with rice - was part of the lunch menu.Mum ordered the Roti Canai for about $5.50 . It was a simple looking dish with roti , 2 curry sauces and a spicy sambal style sauce. The roti looked like a ball of fluff but you simply had to peel away pieces and dip with the sauces of the curry.

I was impressed with the staff - very friendly and prompt with the service. The food was very authentic Malaysian cuisine, very tasty too. No wonder they have queue's daily!

I don't understand the queue line. It just ridiculous. I have been to many really nice Malaysian restaurant and I can tell you if this one just way overrated. tried their nasi lemak and roti but it was just ordinary.
If I have to recommend two dishes, then I would recommend the Mee Goreng as its quite tasty, and also recommend any of the rotis and the Nasi Lemak is also very good.

It was a very popular Malaysian restaurant in the city. The roti is quite yummy and fresh, you can see how they make the roti in front of you and while you wait for the queue. I went there around 5:00pm, so not too much waiting. The fish curry and satay was OK too, I am not impressed as I can get something nicer and cheaper with the Thai restaurant. This is a restaurant that you always want to try when you see the queue, but been there done that. If you want to go, I would suggest you get there before 5:00pm for dinner, otherwise You will be frustrating about the long queue that you have to wait before enter the restaurant.

What I really like about this restaurant is the roti and how they make the roti right in front of you. It is amazing. The food here is just ok. I would certainly go again but it is not on my top list.

what a looong queue!! If you wanna eat there better be prepared to wait for a long time as the queue are endless. In term of the food itself, I don't find it really special apart from the roti canai that the one they spin in from of their shop. overall it is a very decent place to have a malaysian cuisine.

A solid place for Malaysian food. Kinda overpriced, but about average for this sort of cuisine here.

Canai is good, nice and fluffy. Telur bawang gives you the flat version, not my favourite. Servings for curry are kinda small and not very impressive, overall. Kangkung belachan is good, mee goreng a bit spicy, also not bad.

In terms of desserts, love the roti tisu (get it with condensed milk instead of ice cream if you have a sweet tooth -- not only does it taste great, it doesn't make your roti soggy as quickly :)). Roti bom is a bit like a danish..not all that great but very sweet. Chendol was disappointing, hope the only time we tried it was an off day/they changed the recipe.

Approximate cost: $12

I love, love, love this place!!

The food is amazing here and I want to eat all of it!!

The line to get into Mamak can take a while if you go at a peak time (the longest my friends and I have had to wait is about 45 mins or so), but it is worth the wait!

Once you are seated, they take your order pretty quickly and the food comes out within 15 mins of your order being taken.

The staff are always flying around as it gets really busy, however it's not too hard to grab their attention.

I find their prices quite cheap for the quality and service you receive.

I would definitely recommend everyone and anyone to this place!

My absolute favourite dish is the nasi goreng. They can make it quite spicy though, so if you don't like hot food, I would ask them to tone down the chilli :)

Mamak have opened at Wynyard now and are also very good, amazing how quick they are.

eh.. Haymarket one is better than the one in chatswood. in fact I think Chatswood one is getting worse.

A very popular restaurant in Chinatown and rightly-so. The food is extremely satisfying and tasty, it comes pretty quickly too. The prices are extremely low too - ate with a few friends for a total of less than $50! Highly recommended.

Mamak has o be my favourite restaurant in Sydney. It is affordable and delicious. You must try the roti canai (orignial roti) as it comes with beautiful dipping sauce. I would also recommend the beef or chicken skewers as the nutty satay sauce is amazing and comes with chunks of cucumber and onion. Also try the chicken curry (kari ayam)- it's a real winner! Apart from the wait, the service is amazing and staff are efficient. For dessert- get the ice cream with the roti cone (sorry forgot the name) its amazing! Mamak also tends to be quite spicy so order a drink!

If you want to eat at this place, be prepared to wait. Doesn't matter what time of the day, or whether its weekday or weekend, there's always queues in front of this shop. It's my must go to place when I am in sydney. The roti canai is heaven, and cheap too. Goes great with kari ayam or kari kambing. And oh, do order teh tarik with that too. YUM

I'm trying this place out on Wed. We liked the Chatswood one. I hope they're as good as the one in chatswood.

Mamak is yummy! The roti chennai with accompanying curry sauces are really good. The service is really fast, you order one minute and the next minute your meals are in front of you. It is a really busy place though and you generally have to line up for a while unless you come the second it opens.

Great venue for a quick tasty meal. Joined the lunch time queue a enjoyed watching the Roti making for 10 minutes before being seated by a beautiful young waitress. The service was swift and friendly although a mix up with desert caused an extended delay. The portions were generous and delightfully spicy. The prices are really cheap.

Not usually a malaysian food fan but this place just gets it right. Although they don't have a wide selection of food, each item i've sampled has exceeded my expectations. Bare in mind though there is a lofty wait for tables/

I don't like the fact that they don't take booking .But other than that i love their Roti. Nice place to go for lunch but dinner is too crowed. Will go only if I don't have to queue for more than 15 mins.
