We have been customers for a number of years. Last night I ordered a take home meal. Food good but was dismayed to find that there was an EFTPOS surcharge on the $105 meal. For that reason I will not return again. No reason for that sort of charge on an already expensive meal

Approximate cost: $105

Worst experience I’ve had in a while. The prices are towards the costly side, considering other cheaper Vietnamese places. I ordered a special fried rice, it was quitr average. Since I could not finish, I wanted to take it away, but chose not to when I found out that it cost $1 for a plastic container. Quite disappointed that even a takeaway container has to be double the cost of other restaurants.

Have visited this restaurant a few times over the years and always been very happy with the food. The staff get a bit snooty if you haven't made a reservation but have always managed to fit us in.

Really nice atmosphere - can get quite busy and is a small restaurant so would reccomend booking if in large groups.
Food has great flavour however for vietnamese food it is a bit more on the pricier side.

Consistently great food. Usually have their Hanoi spring rolls, bun and/or special broken rice. Food here is authentic. Service is average, communication is sometimes a problem. They don't really modify their dishes to suit, for instance this one time I wanted the beef in my soup fully cooked, had to send it back to the kitchen three times before they got it right.

Nice place to come and eat Vietnamese cuisine. I had the fried rice, a little over cooked but is made up by the liveliness of the establishment

Four of us went to Tien Dat on a Friday night. We had booked the early 5:30 pm sitting. We like to share so we get a range of food but one person is gluten free and another doesn't like spicy food. However apart from the pancake which the GF person couldn't eat we managed to find middle ground and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Spring rolls were tasty with lovely crisp lettuce and mint; pancake very yum but not enough of it! Curry wasn't too hot for the non-spicy person and ok and the stir fry was great. Everything was fresh and the servings were quite generous. I decided that next time though I'd like to just go through the entrees - they looked very interesting!

Tien Dat is popular because they really do make fantastic Vietnamese food. As such, they are very busy, and basically always overcrowded. Trying to get a table without a booking is nearly impossible, and the staff can be quite rude.

The decision to go to Tien Dat is always difficult. Do I want great food, or a nice restaurant where I can hear myself think?

Really amazing Vietnamese food, loved the green chicken curry however (like the previous comment) we found it to be suffocating at times. Tables are placed too close together so trying to communicate with one another is difficult at times since it's easier to hear the conversations from table behind you! Staff aren't at all pleasant, when asked about a particular dish and it's ingredients she pretended not to hear the question!

If you want bad service and to eat in a cramped, loud space - this is your place. The food is great but it's not good enough to make up for the attitude they give. These guys used to be amazing 10 years back. But they've grown too big for their britches.

I've been to this restaurant before so was looking forward to a good meal. However it wasn't has good as usual. The restaurant as 2 sittings: 6.30 & 8.00. We were booked for the 6.30 and got there about 6.35. Our orders were taken at about 6.45 and even then we had to catch the waiter's eye. There were 6 of us so we had 2 servings of the spring rolls for an entree and ordered 4 mains and rice. The entree came fairly quickly and was really good. About 10 minutes after we finished that we got some rice and one main - a chicken curry - which was quite tasty. We consumed that in a short time and waited ... and waited ... and waited for the next 3 dishes. By now it was about 7 20 and the waiter came and told us they were having some difficulties getting the food upstairs - something to do with the lift. Eventually the next 3 dishes arrived. We asked for fresh rice as the last lot had gone cold and this was given. The other dishes were ok. Vegetables were lovely and fresh but overall the flavours were bland and not very interesting. The waiter took our coffee and dessert order just before 8 (we'd eaten the mains quickly!) but after waiting a few minutes we were told we had to leave because it was 8 o'clock. We did mention that we'd waited ages for our meals but it made no difference. No coffee, no dessert ... not happy! I think they could have a contingency plan for such situations - it'll be along time before we go back there.

We've been going to Tien Dat for quite a while now - before it made the cheap-eats guide! Great food, great prices, decent service (considering you're in Box Hill, that is) and it doesn't make you wonder if you'll contract something after eating there. Every time we go there are always multiple orders of broken rice (with the fried egg or with the lot which gives you a egg pate as well) and there's a reason for it - it's very, very, very good.

Nice food - the thai red beef was very good, the fish was nice and the spring rolls were good. There was no hassle with the bottle of BYO and the staff were effective given the place was full (as usual). I have been there a few times - it's just a nice place to go for quality Vietnamese / Thai food.

This place has been in Box Hill for 30 years, surviving and even flourishing in the light of competitor after competitor. It has even outlasted its competitor across the road - a restaurant once called Sunny Court. The only other place with equivalent longevity is Indochine (please see my review of this place)

As a testament to its consistency and quality, the restaurant is busy almost every night which means that bookings are be best way to ensure a seat. Whether it be a Tuesday night or a Friday night the place is busy.

Favorites at this place include the Vietnamese crepe - a nutritious and tasty blend of prawns, lean pork, bean sprouts, and veggies all wrapped in a golden yellow, light and flaky crepe. Cut a piece, add the sauce and lettuce and away you go - textures of crispy crepe mixed with the smoothness of the veggies, prawns that are cooked just right and crunchy bean sprouts provide a taste sensation.

Sizzling Rockling fish is another recommended dish - add the fish and the sauce to bowls of rice and the flavour shines through the rice and the fish pieces.

Chicken Maryland with tomato rice, a traditional Vietnamese dish is also recommended. A piece of deep fried chicken with rice infused with tomato flavour blends well to make a great dish if you are not sharing dishes but ordering single serves as does the broken rice with its mix of fried egg, various meats and veggies.

Some may complain about serving sizes - they re not large by any means but can be considered sufficient given that prices have not risen significantly and remember you are looking at quality over quantity.

The longevity of this place reflects its quality, however from time to time service can be slow or abrupt as there are so many diners in the place whether it be 6pm or 8pm dining - especially on Fridays or Saturdays. Sometimes there are insufficient staff for the floor when the place reaches peak capacity. On a value for money vs quality comparison, it represents good value for money for good quality food.

Had my first meal in Melbourne here in this restaurant.

From my memories the price wasn't exactly cheap for the quality or the serving (don't get me wrong food isn't bad). I've dined here probably 3 or 4 times ever since then.

I wouldn't recommend getting any entrées from this place. had spring rolls once, regretted badly.

They offer tables outside, which can get a bit busy (path is narrow to begin with, then add all the population that travel through BH Metro, you have a disaster).

Service was quite alright. I remember tipping a few times, I only tip when I'm happy with the service.

Have been here many a times and recommend it for the variety and yummy Vietnamese food, quick service and very reasonable price. Only draw back is that it is busy and parking can be tricky. Book ahead and be prepared to pay a little for parking if the street is full.

Have been here many many times. Food is amazing and fantastic value. Have been there with the family (6 adults), shared entrees of Vietnamese spring rolls, variety of mains, drinks etc. and spent approximately $20 per head. Always busy, usually queue waiting, advisable to book. Can be a bit noisy.

A great Vietnamese restaurant. There are a plethora of great Asian restaurants in Box Hill and this is one of the best!l The food quality is exceptional and it is incredibly reasonably priced. It is a noisy restaurant, but the food makes up for the, at times, loud atmosphere. Staff are pretty blunt, but who cares when the food is so damn good and cheap!

Tien-Dat is a premier Vietnamese restaurant in the area. It is only matched by Indochine down the road, who is owned by the same family. The food is the best, and prices are reasonable. You can get a large rice noodle soup for around $10.

tien dat has quality food at good prices. it is small and tight fitting and you feel as though you are sitting on top of the next table but the food is worth it. great rice paper rolls.
