Went there with a group from our Retirement Village and had a wonderful day. The staff were all fantastic, even offering those of us that couldn't walk far to be transported around so we didn't miss anything. The lunch served at the Cafe was enjoyed by all and was really good value as well. The bus trip through the place gave us all lots of good photo opportunities of the animals and the information along the way was clear for those of us that are hard of hearing. A great day was had by all who went along and we still rate it as one of our favourite outings.

Werribee Open Range Zoo is one of only 3 open plain zoos in Australia (Monarto in SA, and the Dubbo Zoo).
Werribee specialises in African animals, but I believe they are expanding their range in the next few years.

The highlight is a tour around the zoo in a safari bus to view the animals in their large paddocks. The buses run about every 10 mins and there's plenty of room on board. You get your safari bus ticket for a specific time (free) w

The zoo itself is good value, at around $26 Per adult and $13 for children. If you go during Victorian school holidays or weekends, kids are free.

It took us approx 3 hrs to see everything at the zoo, including the safari bus tour. We didn't go around the walking trails through.

We would definitely go again.

Approximate cost: $26

Loved the little meerkats in the glass enclosure as you walk in. Went on a safari ride in the jeep which was lots of fun. Got close to some animals. Great to see the freedom of animals while also being able to look at them. The enclosures are excellent. Great day out.

Werribee Open Range Zoo is my favorite zoo because you get to see the animals in a way that is the closest to their natural habitat as possible. Part of the visit is done on a Safari Bus that takes you into the actual enclosures. You can also arrange to do close encounter tours where you get up closer with the animals. These are great for photography to. I can't wait to go back again!

The Werribee Zoo is well worth the visit. We went out on a safari truck thing and saw lots of animals close up. It is quite amazing coming across Rhinos, giraffes and buffalo, all just doing there thing.

The grounds are spacious and the pathways are easy. There are lots of surprisingly good displays. Personally my favourite was near the african huts where there is a bird sound walk.

Have been a few times with family and I recommend it. Just near the Zoo are some beautiful parks, including the Rose Gardens. The Mansion has tea rooms and historical displays as well as wine tastings (worth a visit).

You can make a full day of a trip to Werribee and take in more on your trip than just the Zoo OR better yet stay at The Mansion in their luxury accommodation to get more time out.

We visited this zoo with family after being told this zoo was better than Melbourne zoo. How wrong that person was!

We decided to go on the bus tour on arrival and was really disappointed with how far the animals were from the bus, although the commentary was quite good. After the tour we decided to visit animal enclosures, but was again disappointed as most of the animals were in hiding. Probably because they'd been feed at the earlier shows which we had missed because we were on the bus tour.

Will have to try Melbourne zoo next time.

Great, accurate review! I have visited this zoo twice and would definitely recommend your latter suggestion of visiting the animal enclosures before going on the bus tour (as I did on my second trip!)

Never been to the Werribee Zoo before. So I really didnt know what to expect. The queue to get in was long even after buying the ticket online. The staff and keepers could not have been any nicer. They were more then happy to help and answer questions. Took a bus tour and we got up very close to the Rhino. Sadly the big cats were asleep some distance away . Gorillas were active and i filmed a charging Gorilla beating his chest. Only down side was the talks given by the keepers in various locations were all held at the same time. I would have liked to see and hear all the talks

Approximate cost: $26

I was so excited to visit as I've always wanted too. Took my niece and my partner, it had rained a little the day before and after we'd purchased our tickets we were notified the bus tour would end early as they said the bridge was flooded... we went up to the bridge.. it was not flooded.. at all! We wern't happy, didnt get to see the giraffes or rhinos, wish we had been told before purchasing tickets

One of my favourite places to visit. I've been to Werribee Zoo many times and always enjoyed my trip. Better quality food and more variety in the Meerkat Bistro would be nice but it's still nice to eat there either before or after seeing the animals. I've done just one wild encounter at Werribee Zoo and that was the Giraffe Feeding. To actually be able to go out and feed these amazing animals was such an incredible experience. The staff were great in giving informative descriptions and warning all of us that when we held up our branches for the giraffes to eat we needed to hold on tight! They also kindly took photos of people visiting together which I really appreciated. I want to try the giraffe feeding again one day, truly an amazing time

This Zoo is great. Awesome range of animals, great activities, great value when purchasing a year pass and the open range is awesome. I've taken the two year old multiple times in the last year and each time he experiences something different and gains new appreciation for wildlife. A must visit.
