I've been to the curry house about 8 times - it's fairly good value and high quality food. Though basic, it manages to satisfy very well. A fantastic venue for a large function or banquet, it's very easy to keep the price below $20 a head and come out very stuffed. They also offer prompt take-away, and lunchtime/dinnertime deals.
Hog's breath is worth going to a few times a year - the steak can be anywhere from mediocre to absolutely breathtaking.
Curly fries are always delicious, the best way to experience this restaurant is with a group of people, preferably after a few drinks so you don't notice how much the staff are pushing more food/drinks on you.
Approximate cost: $15-35
This restaurant is very good for a special occasion, however much too expensive to consider coming here regularly. The teppanyaki grill is an experience and worth trying at least once in a lifetime.
We came here for a bachelor party, and were very well treated by the staff. It's a performance as much as it is a meal, as anybody who has experienced this style of dining will be familiar with.
Try not to get the egg in your eye.
Approximate cost: $55
Was treated to dinner at this restaurant by a friend. Even though I wasn't paying for the meal, it was not a pleasant experience.
We ended up waiting around 45 minutes to have our food brought to us, though the restaurant was half-full. I had ordered the seafood pizza, and the only way to describe it was pathetic. I could have done a better job (and saved some money) buying a base and some prawns from coles. None of the ingredients were identifiable, and it tasted like aluminum. The salad was a few leafs on the side. Drinks standard restaurant prices, all beer from CUB (not worth it).
Friend's meal looked very basic, and was barely passable from reports.
Approximate cost: $16-35
If you have $10 and a hungering for a gigantic meal that mostly consists of potato, look no further. Hop into Moos and pick whatever takes your fancy - it's all fantastic. Great heaping piles of coleslaw, cheese, meats, sauces, whatever. Most people will shy away from paying what they are asking, but believe me it's fully worth it.
Approximate cost: $9-12
I visit Porkys every couple of months to pick up a pizza with the lot, with anchovies, extra crispy. The price has crept up over the years (I think it's $10.30 now) but it remains the best pizza in Ballarat.
The pasta here is also very good, and the gourmet pizzas are worth trying at least once! Staff are always glad to see you.
I usually order by phone and drop in 10 minutes later, to pick up the perfect pizza.
Approximate cost: $12 - 30
I stop by here 4 or 5 times a week for a coffee, or to pick up a new tea. I challenge anyone to find a better cappucino or iced tea in town.
Their teas are slightly expensive but very high quality. The staff are very knowledgeable about what they are selling, and how to make a great coffee.
Also, there's fishies, and local art.
$3 for a small coffee, $3.50 with a double shot. $4 for a large, $4.50 for a large double shot.
Grab a cap, sit outside the front and admire the view.
We went to Zaragosa's one night for a work function, and despite there being 20+ of us it all went very smoothly. The staff are all very helpful and friendly, and were able to get a discount for us due to numbers.
The entrees were very tasty, and small enough to get you hungry for the main meal without causing too much of an impact. The Nachos are the best i've seen at any venue - a large serving is more than enough for 4 people, and you probably wouldn't need a main afterwards - heaping piles of corn chips, guacamole, salsa, and sour cream.
The main meals are all reasonably sized and high quality spanish/mexican food.
There is a wide range of beers that are mostly unavailable in other places, including the chilli beer which is an experience best to have for yourself.
Approximate cost: $20
Marty's is amongst the best in the country, no questions. Their gluten-free batter is amazing, and even their normal stuff is way above par. The service is prompt, friendly, and they have great value deals for large orders. There is a very large variety of food available, some of which is unavailable anywhere else in town.
Mr rice is some of the best quality food, value, and service in town. Fresh food, fantastic service, fast, tasty, no MSG, preservatives, or colors. Constantly changing range.
I am updating this review to lower my 'quality' rating from 5 to 4, as recently some claypot beef we ordered was not properly cooked, and contained red, almost raw meat, which smelled kind of funny. I'll give them one more chance but this is the kind of slip up that causes days off work...
Approximate cost: $6 - 12
