This review is for The Lady Nelson Visitor & Discovery Centre, Mount Gambier SA

This visitors centre is more spectacular than most, with the tall ship outside. It really looks nice at night too, all lit up. There is plenty of local information available and there seems to be heaps of things to see and do in the area.
There is a Discovery Centre tour you can do at the visitors centre, and we found this very interesting and quite fun. The price wasnt too bad, about $10 for adults and $25 for a family, I think it was. We spent an hour or so in the centre, rather than just picking up brochures as we usually do.

This is a really nice family park. It has lots of big shady trees and plenty of lawn. There is a swimming pool and childrens playground. It is near the highway, but is fenced, and we had a site reasonably close, but didn't find it to be a problem. We had a site with its own ensuite facilities, which were clean and roomy. The sites can be a little tight, though, if somebody doesnt park their caravan straight.

This is a quite a big caravan park, with lots of sites. It is set on a hillside, and the sites are cut into the slope, so that just about every one has a really nice view of the sea and Boston Island and the surrounding coastline. It is all grassed and the toilets and showers are large and modern and clean. It is quite steep, but all the sites are nice and level, and I didnt find it a big problem to manoevre our van onto the site, as long as you take it steady. The roads are all bitumenised.

This review is for The Big Galah, Kimba SA

verified email - 29 May 2009

You do a double-take as you drive through Kimba. You tend to look at the big grain silos first, but look the other way and there is this great big pink Galah. Its really quite impressive, and makes you smile. Its probably not as well known as some of the other Oversize Aussie attractions, but I reckon its better than some of the better-known ones. The gemshop behind has a nice range of local gemstones, including really nice Jade pieces, and opal. There were also carved emu eggs and other souvenirs. Well worth a look if you're travelling through.

This is a really great country pub. Plenty of room, clean and tidy, and the food was fantastic. We were in a group of 6 and all of our meals were top notch. Really good country food, generous serves, at a reasonable price. The staff were very friendly, polite and helpful. The decor was also very nice, a lot of country farm pieces made it feel very comfortable and inviting. Could really feel the 'country hospitality' you read about or imagine.
We broke down in Kimba for 3 days, rather than being a disaster, we found the town inviting and friendly, with several pleasant surprises like this Hotel.

Although the caravan park doesn't have much grass, it is neat and has plenty of room. The toilet and shower facilities aren't flash, but are clean and respectable. And the price charged is very reasonable. There are also Motel units that I have stayed in on an earlier trip. Once again, nothing flash, but quite respectable and clean and well priced. We broke down there and spent 3 nights rather than 1, and it was quite pleasant. A lot of overnighters on the highway to/from WA. Better than many I have stopped at or seen on the more isolated highways of Australia.

This review is for Brambuk - The National Park & Cultural Centre, Halls Gap VIC

verified email - 29 May 2009

Brambuk is owned and operated by the local Aboriginal people. There is a nice range of displays and information about the Grampians (Gariwerd, as the Aboriginals call it), and the National Park, and the Aboriginal culture of the area. There is a Bush Tucker Cafe there too. We didnt eat there, but it looked interesting. There's a gift shop as well, prices about average for a tourist attraction, and books and maps on the area were available and very handy. Would be a great place to take OS visitors.

This mini-golf course was really well set up. It had really fun holes, with hills and water features and interesting hazards. The gardens around the holes are really beautiful as well. And the views of the surrounding mountains are stunning. You can easily spend a couple of hours there. The Jackpot Hole at the end was quite fun too, but near impossible. Still gets you in, though. Great fun for all age groups, the kids loved it too!

This is a really nice park, plenty of space, clean toilets and shower facilities, and the view in 3 directions from the park of the Grampians towering above is really spectacular. It has a pool, tennis court, jumping pillow for the kids and BBQ areas, plus plenty of space for kids to run around and play ball-games etc.
Its just out of the town, perhaps 1km, so is nice and quiet, but an easy and pleasant walk into town on a paved path/cycleway.We had a great time here!

This is a very clean, fresh, vibrant cafe, with great menu choices, at reasonable prices. The owners Nez and Maz and their staff are all very friendly and make you feel very welcome.
