$15 dumpling buffet is a steal, but can't expect the best quality. Dumplings taste average but really can't ask much for the price.

Dumplings are pretty good here. Their vegetablr mushroom and sweet pumpkin are really good. Just dont expect any service from staff. They can hardly speak english

Visited a few months ago. Very crowded restaurant so they must be very popular. Ordered the mushroom and vegetable dumplings. They weren't bad but have definitely tried better, also the soy sauce tasted a bit strange? The service was very quick but sadly won't be back.

This place is well known to most as a cheap no frills decent feed. I first started coming here 6-7 years ago and I am happy to say that the service has actually improved from way back then.

Last visit a week ago had me bewildered when the waiter asked if everything was ok and did we need anything? Never heard those words uttered in the unusual decor walls of this place...

The beers have gone up to about 6 bucks??, so best BYO drink...but the dishes seemed to be araldited on the same prices as years ago...The fried or steamed mushroom and veg dumplings with a splash of chilli sauce are a personal fav. You will have a laugh at the strange music played for a Chinese eatery here...Love it!!

I went here last night for the first time and even though the staff and surrounds left a bit to be desired, the food was tasty, cheap and fast. I agree with the other reviews, the place does have a smell to it and it is by no means 5 star, however you dont go for the service.

"Dirty dumplings" is its colloquial name and if that puts you off - then it probably isn't the place for you.

It's single best feature is price. The meals are served fast and they fill you up. The smell takes getting use to (at least to my western nose)

The service is well documented – bizarre at best, non existant at worst.

Do I recommend it? yes, on price alone – but there are much better places to eat (peer down some of the neighbouring alleyways and explore)

The wall plaque commemorating its opening by Jeff Kennett is perfectly at home in this surreal little word.

Approximate cost: $8

Worth a visit for the experience, it really is a Melbourne icon :) the host of the restaurant has to be seen to be believed, I had read many reviews of Camy and heard many stories but nothing substituted for the actual experience. The food was good, I have had better but it was still nice. Perhaps a touch of MSG? Or at least something which upset my stomach, though my stomach is very sensitive so others may be fine!

Approximate cost: $7

I've been here countless times. Many uni students go here for the cheap dumplings. Huge serves for somewhere around $6. The dumplings are usually out within minutes of ordering, sometimes even within the minute. There is free tea which you help yourself to (don't even think about asking the wait staff, they will just point and walk away).

Beware that this place is well known for its lack of hygiene or service. It smells fairly bad (vinegar smelling) and you're often forced to share tables. The cups and bowls are not dried after cleaning, so you need to wipe them out before use. Luckily there are tissues at the table.

There are much better places to eat if you care about service and cleanliness. Certainly don't bring anyone here that you want to impress. But if you're after a quick cheap meal and can laugh at the dodginess of this place, you should try it. The dumplings aren't amazing - but they're good enough! I personally like the steamed mushroom and vegetable dumplings and the prawn and pork wantons.

Approximate cost: $6

One of my least favourite dumplings restaurant in Melbourne. We ordered the fried pork dumplings and they arrived with a grainy, burnt breadcrumb-like base filled with oil. The bowls and eating utensils were wet and somewhat cleaned.
Not a fan no matter how cheap the prices are.

I agree with you completely! So many better dumpling places in Melbourne!

Lots of food for cheap! Camy Shanghai Dumpling is known for terrible service but if you can accept that it's a budget dumpling house it's great. There's a variety of dumplings, stir fried noodles, pot stickers and soup on offer with the focus on large serving sizes quickly and cheaply.
This isn't the sort of place you'd go if you wanted to take your time with your meal or if you wanted to impress someone, but if you were looking for a quick and cheap meal in the CBD this is a pretty good option.
They're quite popular as well and fill up quite quickly on Friday and Saturday nights so either allow time or possibly avoid. I've never tried to go there on those nights because the line runs out into the street, I'd imagine the line would move quite quickly but it's something to be aware of.
