Amazing experience. They care about animals and are less concerned about money. Went here for a second opion and this visit saved me spending $1700 on my dog, plus putting him through painful surgery

Approximate cost: $45.00

We took our puppy to lort smith animal hospital as she was very ill. At the time we didnt know this but later came to realize that the doctors their did not know what they where talking about. I had one doctor ring me up and ask me if i wanted to put my puppy down as she had cancer, this is after she had been in hospital for a week and had many different tests done from x rays to ultra sounds to even opening her stomach up to see what was inside. After all that they had no answers for me and my puppy was getting worse by the day! Thats when I recived a phone call saying she has cancer do you want us to put her down? After some thought I asked if we could do a byopsi on her to see if their was cancerous growth? The vet said they can but that she was sure it was cancer. Anyway after the results came back their was no cancer found. Wow what a surprise! After that i went and picked my dog up as sick as she was and took her to another vet. My bill at lort smith was already close to $2000 with no result and actually more damage. One day after being at the new vet she was on the way to recovery, all they did was take a stool sample and then they saw that she was suffering from salmonella. Lort smith opened her up, gave her ultra sounds, x rays said she had cancer when all they had to do was take a simple stool sample. I rang them up to complain but it fell on deaf ears and when finally I got a phone call from the head vet, he told me that they followed correct procedure.... hmmm ok correct procedure is to open a dog up before doing stool and blood samples especially when the dog has been in your care for a week and she was opened up on the forth day. So why wouldnt you do the samples before you opened her up, you had plenty of time I asked? He said he would investigate and call me back, wow surprise again, never recived a phone call back. Imagine how many other pets have been put down their and did not need putting down. If your pet has been put down at lort smith I would really be asking myself the question... was it necassary? If you want your dog vaccinated or micro chipped take it their. For anything else DO NOT! They might be cheap but at the end off the day they could cost your pet their life and with all the miss diagnosis and unnecessary treatment and operations it can cost you alot more taking your pet there than anywhere else. The only good thing about this hospital is that they are the absolute last resort for people. I would only use them again as a absolute last resort!

Your experience sounds very fustrating and concerning. I hope they actually cared enough deep down inside to review the way they do things. They obviously did not want to admit fault to you. Hope your dog is doing well!

Steven, I am very sorry to read this. I, too, had a frustrating experience with the Lort Smith. I hope your pooch is doing well now.

Hi Steven1, Thanks for such a detailed, albeit troubling review. Unfortunately, we have discovered many vets who care more about accruing massive (obscene) sums of money from the suffering of innocent animals. It is interesting to note that your subsequent veterinarian diagnosed the problem with one simple, inexpensive stool sample. Shameful behaviour from a Lort Smith employee. Thanks for sharing. Reeces

I recommend Dr Sascha for small animal vet care_especially for rabbits. She provided a great level of care and dietary information for my pet rabbit. Lort Smith were excellent in providing information.

Update 27 Jan 2011: Their chaplain is fantastic too. Dr Sascha has since left Lort Smith.

the excellent chaplain has now 'left' as well.

Their Chaplain helped me grieve with the loss of my Romeo. I was sorry to learn that she had left.

Lort Smith has been excellent in treating my dog. He had knee surgery there a few months ago as we couldnt afford to have it done anywhere else. We have since just been going there as the service is great and its much cheaper than a normal vet. They also give discounts for Health Care Card Holders

My kitten reacted to her worming tablet and our local vet was closed for the night. We had no money at the time and the closest after hours vet would not help us unless we paid $130 up front. Lort Smith allows you to pay a deposit and then pay it pff on an installment plan. If it wasn't for them, our kitten would have died.

My housemate and I adopted a cat from them years ago and we found them to be fantastic. The staff were all really friendly and helpful when we were choosing a cat to adopt (so hard!) and the vet was great when we had to bring our cat back a week later or so with a nasty abscess. It's been years since I've been there, but if I was ever going to get a cat again this is where I'd go.

We adopted a kitten (6 months old) in March 2007 and since then have always been taking her there for annual check ups. Doctors are very nice and friendly, also the girls at the adoption centre. The reception girls are usually very busy (not that friendly), but you want them to help you, not be your best friend. And they always do.
I would certainly recommend this hospital. Make sure you make booking beforehand.

The staff are sooooo incredibly sweet and lovely and caring. They have an appointment system now and I have found getting an appointment to be fairly easy and the vets have been fairly punctual with their appointments. The vet nurses are beyond compare. Their compassion and dedication to the animals is inspiring.

I found the Lort Smith a horrible place to take your pet when they are really sick. I was happy to have my animals de-sexed there but when it comes to life & death moments I have found that they have offered me to put my pet down. One of the times I took my little girl (dog) there as she was very unwell and they suggested to have her put down as they said she was suffering. I took her home to think about it (she was medicated) and then took her to my favorite vet the very next morning and they took care of it & advised me she didn't need to be put down. It's 4 years later & she's still with me. The next time I went to the Lort Smith they advised me my boy (dog) possibly had mouth cancer, I then took him to my favorite vet and guess what it was a mouth infection caused by a bad tooth. I only use the Lort Smith in a emergency when no one else is open.

Hello Chinabear, thank goodness for a second opinion! So pleased to hear that your little one survived her condition and Lort Smith. Thanks for offering such a detailed and well written review. Regards, Reeces

I have my own vet in Sunshine that I usually take my cat & dog to but my cat needed emergency attention one night and I was happy to know that the Lort Smith Animal Hospital was there for our emergency. They were kind, caring and helped me through my worries until my cat was safely back in my arms!
