My husband and I had dinner here last week. We were seated quite quickly and the waitress was very attentive and helpful (she offered to help us choose something because there is a lot on the menu and it is hard to choose!)

My husband had deep fried chili chicken which he liked (although it was a bit salty, but in a good way). I had the Char Kuey Teow which was tasty and full of seafood (but the menu doesn't mention this so avoid if you don't like seafood!)

The portion sizes were quite big for the price. It's a good, cheap place to eat if you're looking for something quick.

Approximate cost: $10

Not withstanding the unfortunate name, my husband and I chose to have dinner here a couple of weeks ago.

The restaurant is clean and well presented inside. We were seated quickly and given complimentary prawn crackers and green tea to start. We had spring rolls and dim sims for entree. The spring rolls were fresh & hot but my husband was disappointed that they had no meat inside. There were three different varieties in the serve of dim sims (prawn, pork and shark fin) which were quite tasty.

For main we had lemon chicken and Mongolian beef. The lemon chicken was REALLY lemony (not in a good way) and the batter on the chicken was slightly doughy. The Mongolian beef was satisfactory and the meat wasn't chewy like it can be at some places.

We had green tea and black sesame ice cream for dessert. They both appeared to be freshly made and the green tea was especially tasty. You would be good to avoid the black sesame unless you really like the taste of sesame because it was really strong.

The service was OK, the food was OK, but it just wasn't outstanding. People eating seafood dishes on other tables looked to be really enjoying themselves and their food, so perhaps seafood is the specialty of this place. An average experience.

My husband and I had lunch here on the weekend while shopping along Centre Rd. The place was REALLY busy when we got there, so we figured it must be good. We were seated quite quickly by a friendly waitress. There is a lot to choose from on the menu so it took us a while to decide. You have to place your order at the counter and pay in advance, which is annoying because it deters you from ordering more as you go. It was fine on this occasion as we only wanted a quick lunch.

The lunch rush had started to clear soon after we had arrived, but the meal still took quite a long while to get to us (long after we finished the drinks we had also ordered). We were starting to get a little antsy, but when the food did finally arrive we were really happy with it. My husband's Club Sandwich was fresh and hot, and a really good size (very filling!) My chicken risotto was delicious! It was also fresh and hot, cooked perfectly (not mushy!) and the chicken was delicious. We were both really happy with our meals and so we ordered takeaway coffees before we left (coffees were OK; not bad but not fantastic)

For the cost of the meals, the quality is very good. They could probably speed up their service a little, or at least tell customers if there is a delay.

We would consider going back again if we're in the area.

My family have visited Alderson's Pharmacy for many, many years. It is an established family business (I believe the owner's grandfather opened the pharmacy many years ago!) and Kent and his team are absolutely brilliant. All of the chemists are experienced and friendly. They will sit down with you and give you all the information you need about your medications and they really go out of their way to provide you with excellent customer service.
When I was caring for my elderly grandfather, they provided me with a lot of assistance and even delivered medications to our home on a couple of occasions when we couldn't get to the chemist.
I highly recommend this business!

This review is for Poppets Pet Supplies & Grooming, Beaumaris VIC

Poppets is a family-run pet store in the Beaumaris concourse. I have found the owners to be friendly and helpful every time I've been there. They have a pet grooming service which I have recently used for my dog. In the past, my dog has had to be sedated because he is really scared of the clippers and hairdryer and won't keep still. They took me and my dog through to see their grooming area a week before clipping so that he could meet their groomer and have a positive experience that he would associate with the venue. Their groomer, Nicole, is a dog-trainer and managed to groom my dog successfully without sedation. I felt confident in their ability to groom my dog without the need for sedation. I was very happy with the results and will definitely take my dog there in the future.

Approximate cost: $69 for my dog (small breed) to be washed and clipped

This review is for Istanbul Guzel Turkish Restaurant, Mentone VIC

verified email - 23 Jul 2011

We came across this restaurant while we were trying to find another Middle Eastern restaurant in Mentone (that appears to have closed down and turned into a Thai restaurant at some point). We figured we'd give it a go because we had nowhere else to go by that point.

If you're looking for something fancy, this is definitely not the place to go to. The decor looks like it hasn't changed since the 70s; its faux-wood panel walls are covered in faded tourist posters that look as old as I am. Don't go here for any special anniversaries or anything, lest you find yourself in big trouble with the missus. But, if you are looking for a cheap, neighbourly, ethnic restaurant this is right up your alley.

We had the banquet menu, and the food was satisfactory. There was plenty of food, from dips and bread (HUGE basket of bread!) to meze/entrees to a heaped up plate of meat and sides for main. We were lucky we had enough room left for turkish delight and baklava for dessert. If you're looking for fine dining, though, this is not the place for you. The food served is better suited to that of a home-cooked meal by your Turkish grandmother. It is not going to wow you, but it'll fill your belly if that's what you're after. The prices are reasonable for the quantity of food offered.

If you like entertainment while you eat they do have it; there was a belly dancer who performed while we were having our meal, but we found it made us quite uncomfortable as the tables are quite close together and there wasn't a lot of space between us and the dancer when she came by.

We wouldn't rush to go back there, but it's not a bad place if you want something cheap and local.

This review is for Hairy Canary, Melbourne VIC

verified email - 23 Jul 2011

My husband and I went to Hairy Canary for the first time many years ago and we were pretty disappointed with the experience. We found the food to be lacking and overpriced at the time, and it wasn't somewhere we thought we'd ever return to.

As we were catching up with some friends this week who suggested the place, we figured we'd try it out again since it had been a few years and you never know, it might have improved over time. The service was definitely better but the food and the pricing hasn't changed.

We didn't have a booking but the friendly bartender/waitress suggested a table that she knew would be free in a couple of minutes. When another patron tried to poach the table, she told them that it was reserved and made them move. We found her to be friendly, prompt and attentive throughout the night (especially considering how full the place was) so our view in terms of service is very positive.

When it came to the food, however, it was still a very disappointing experience. The tapas servings were tiny, considering the prices. We got a small bowl of sliced chorizo that wouldn't have been enough to feed one person, let alone share with friends, which cost around $18. The croquettes were around the same price and there were only three small ones in the serving. Neither of the dishes tasted of anything much, definitely nothing special.

Usually with tapas we'd get 5-6 dishes but the prices make that very restrictive. So we decided to get some pizzas. My husband got an Italian pizza which he thought was nice. I was stupid enough to get a "chippie" pizza, which was a big mistake. It was basically a dry pizza base with dry potato crisps on top. There was supposed to be some cheese and onion marmelade on it as well but there was so little that you would be surprised to taste any. It was just so dry, flavourless and terrible! I would not recommend anyone to order that pizza.

Finally, we figured we'd get some dessert to get the taste of the chippie pizza out of our mouths. Who can get dessert wrong, right? Little did we know that they could. I got a rosewater halva trifle and about 80% of the dish was cream/almonds and the rest was the trifle. It also tasted pretty flavourless and was drowned out by the cream. My husband ordered churros which were OK but had way too much cinnamon sugar and pistachios on them so they just tasted like powder and nuts with a bit of chocolate sauce.

We walked away feeling completely unsatisfied and we won't be going back there unless it's only for drinks.

My husband and I had breakfast here last Saturday. The service was fine and the wait staff were pleasant. I found the quality of the food to be very good but the dishes overpriced. The portion sizes were very disappointing considering the prices. I ordered an avocado ciabatta with goat's cheese and a poached egg on the side. I basically got one very thin piece of ciabatta with avocado on it and four small dollops of goat's cheese on top (definitely not worth the extra $4 for the goat's cheese). We also found out upon paying the bill that they charged us an additional $4 for the poached egg!!! My husband's big breakfast was nice but, again, the portion size was definitely not worth the almost $20 it cost. While the quality of the food was good, we won't be rushing back as it is way too overpriced.

I have visited this practice for years, for both myself and for my elderly grandfather who I was caring for. Dr Petrovska is such a caring and considerate doctor. She really takes the time to check you out and make sure that she diagnoses you properly. You never feel hurried. The only downside to this is that you often have to wait a while past your appointment but I never minded much because she's such a good doctor. She has a really friendly team working there as well, it is a real family atmosphere. Dr Petrovska is quite popular so you should try to book ahead if you want to see her, but the other doctors on staff are good too. They've also got in-house pathology now so you don't have to go elsewhere to get blood tests, etc. And they bulk bill. Highly recommended!

This review is for The Bread Roll Shop, Ormond VIC

This is such a lovely little shop! They only make bread rolls and pastries, so you can't get loaves of bread, but everything is fresh and delicious. The first time I went there another customer started telling me about how wonderful their mini pizzas are. I tried one yesterday and I must agree, really delicious! It also came out fresh from the oven just before I bought it so it looked especially appetising. The staff are super friendly and there is a really nice atmosphere in the store. Recommended!
