This place is a paradox - loads of money spent on doing it up nicely, much talk on their website about their great chef, use of local organic produce etc - but our food was very average, and people around us had real issues with the service. (We didn't, our waitress was lovely.)

Strangest of all - after all the police warnings about never losing sight of your ID due to ID theft - what kind of restaurant asks diners to pay before eating or HAND OVER THEIR LICENCE AND CREDIT CARD to their waitress until the meal is over and paid for?! Our jaws dropped when this was explained to us.

We ordered the tasting platter for two - quite reasonably priced at $25.90. We were both really looking forward to the arancini balls and the creamy garlic prawns. Most of the platter was OK (cajun chicken strips, chorizo, salt and pepper squid) - not great but OK. But the arancini balls were dry and completely flavourless, and the prawns were a disaster - undercooked, no flavour, strange watery texture - like those cheap Thai prawns you find in the supermarket. We abandoned both dishes after the first bite.

I wish I could give them a better rating - who knows, maybe we caught them on a bad day... But at the end of the day there are some issues they definitely need to sort out if they want a reputation for high standards as their website suggests.

Great value Singaporean/Malaysian food - dine in or take away.

We haven't dined in - only ordered take away, but we've been very happy with the smiley, helpful service, good quality food, generous serves and great value for money. Our all time favourites: bbq pork, mee goreng, crispy skin chicken and combination omelette.

Open Monday-Saturday: 11am - 9pm, closed Sunday and Public Holidays

This review is for John Hughes Service Centre, East Victoria Park WA

23 Jun 2012

Like insurance salesmen and second hand car dealers, the Automotive Repairs Industry has developed a bit of a dodgy reputation for ripping off unsuspecting clients if they can possibly get away with it. Those of us who don't know a lot about cars can be easy prey for 'over-diagnosing' and unscrupulous service mechanics.

Twice recently the John Hughes Service Centre have saved me a lot of money by refusing to do unnecessary work on my car that my previous service centre told me was urgently in need of doing.

On top of that, they have gone out of their way to explain exactly what needed to be done and why - right down to going out to the workshop and retrieving the damaged part they have just replaced, showing me the damage and explaining how that was affecting the safety and performance of my car.

It's hard not to be impressed with this level of honesty and accountability, and also the speed with which they deal with warranty issues. Two thumbs up from me! :)

Delicious! Obviously a very experienced chef out the back slaving away to produce top notch authentic Malaysian cuisine.

We love sharing dishes, and that's exactly what they expect you to do here. Our favourites would be the kway teow goreng, the fantastic roti, and their signature satays for which they are rightly famous.

Top place for family get togethers and work functions.

This review is for Balmoral Hotel, Victoria Park WA

22 Jun 2012

We visit the Balmoral regularly for early family dinners with my folks. The staff are lovely about seating us in a relatively quiet spot, nice and close to the aircon in summer!

Our meals have always been excellent, a bit on the large side which makes the boys very happy. We've enjoyed some fantastic steaks and burgers, and the seafood dishes have been consistently great.

On the downside, given the prices, we think they need to address the dry, pre-made salad situation. Nothing like a crisp salad to add a little crunch to your dinner, but finely shredded salad vegies dry out quickly if they're left sitting around, as these obviously have been.

All up though, it's a great dining experience, and after reading one of the reviews below I need to get back soon on a Saturday morning to try the eggs benedict!

This my favourite Bunnings - it's ginormous, and the staff are super nice. So friendly and helpful, and I've never been made to feel a nuisance when I have lots of questions.

I've always received great DIY advice - even on a busy Saturday morning, they take the time to make sure you're getting the best paint for the job, help with colour selection etc.

Very good for craft supplies, and an excellent garden section.

I just love visiting this place! I relax as soon as I walk in the door. Something about the relaxed staff, all the cosy nooks and crannies stuffed with comfy seating, and rustic tables groaning under the weight of the latest and greatest books just waiting for me to discover them!

The outdoor area is very pleasant for most of the year, and inside it's always homey, filled with the chatter of friends and family enjoying each other's company over beautiful coffee and simple, authentic home style cooking.

They're surprisingly kid friendly for a book store, and outside in the covered courtyard there's an interesting supply of toys and books to keep the little ones occupied.

This review is for Jewel Of The Park, East Victoria Park WA

21 Jun 2012

We always seem to take home left-overs when we visit Jewel - and they taste SO yummy reheated the next day!

We usually order a selection of dishes to share, which works well when you're not all that familiar with the menu. So far, we've had great success - the Butter Chicken would be our all time favourite, mouth-wateringly good every time! The Naan breads and the Mango Lassi are firm favourites as well.

The decor could do with a lift, but to be honest the atmosphere really pleasant and the staff are so sweet and friendly that we always walk away feeling that we've had a good evening.

Planning to go back one weekend for breakfast.

This review is for Dome, East Victoria Park WA

20 Jun 2012

This place has a warm atmosphere and is a really great spot to meet friends. The coffee is excellent of course, and the menu is Dome's usual. What is different about this Dome is the layout - it's quite complex, creating a U shape around a small courtyard. The overall effect is of many small rooms offering lots of privacy.

Seating arrangements are quite varied, both indoors and outdoors - from booth seating, to large wingback chairs, to the usual Dome tables with bentwood chairs.

Because of all the "hidden corners" I thought we would not be seen by the wait staff, but they attended to us just fine, clearing tables with a smile whenever needed.

This review is for Kabuki Japanese Takeaway, Victoria Park WA

20 Jun 2012

We really enjoy the sushi at Kabuki. The decor looks a bit tired, but we rarely eat there. We usually just pop in on the way home from work to pick up a healthy, delicious dinner.

Dine-in or take away. The usual Japanese menu is available, but the sushi and the teriyaki chicken are our favourites.

Tip: If you come at the wrong time and the sushi in the cabinet doesn't look inviting, ask for something to be made fresh for you. Takes a while, but really worth the wait as the sushi just melts in your mouth.
