This review is for Khokolat Bar, Melbourne VIC

verified email - 25 Aug 2013

I've been here a couple of times over the past few months with mates for a bit of a night out. First heard about Khokolat Bar (pronounced Chocolate bar) through a friend who recommended it for a night of old school RnB.

The music was really good although not as old school RnB as I hoped. They primarily play recent top forty pop RnB mixed with some of the classics. Like any club it does get pretty hot in there when it's packed which on a Saturday night is pretty full and can attract a line up at the front but it moves quickly. If you are there earlier in the night (around 10ish) they serve finger food like mini quiches. The bathrooms are also kept relatively clean throughout the night and not as skanky as some other clubs in the city. A couple of things that disappoints me about this club is that it takes forever to get a drink as it seems that they are under staffed or they're really slow at serving. The staff are also not particularly friendly either and I found the people manning the cloak room particularly rude and uninviting when really there is absolutely no need (granted I know they may deal with some undesirables and drunks throughout the night but I have never found them to be friendly at all even at the beginning of the night - does not hurt to crack a smile and wish us a good night!)

Not sure if I would make a beeline to this club again - I reckon there are better RnB clubs in the city.

Whenever we get out of town and down the coast we like to spoil ourselves with seafood dining. The Vista was recommended to us as the best seafood restaurant in Apollo Bay.

We decided to share the seafood platter for two given we were craving seafood (without the half lobster - this would have set us back an extra $60). I was really excited about it as I saw another couple feasting on it on a nearby table. It was certainly plentiful and we left completely stuffed! Unfortunately it wasn't the best seafood I've had and I'm not not if I just had high expectations or they were just having an off night. I felt the bugs on then platter were overlooked and the muscles weren't amazing. Usually when ordering a seafood platter you get bowl of water to lightly clean your hands to wash off the crab or prawn juice but we weren't given one which made the dining experience a bit messy. The food was great - just not amazing.

The service was great and the staff very friendly, warm and really attentive (although throughout the meal we were asked half a dozen times how everything was going which I thought was a bit OTT. I know they had nothing but the best intentions and wanted to ensure we had everything we needed but sometimes you just want to eat your meal and enjoy your loved ones company in peace. :/)

I would give them another shot to sample the other menu items :)

Approximate cost: $180 for the seafood platter for two

This review is for La Bimba, Apollo Bay VIC

We down the coast for the weekend and were really craving seafood - but good quality stuff not just some imported deep fried variety served in yesterday's newspaper.

We found La Bimba on the main drag and was impressed with their European inspired seafood menu so decided to give it a go. We were instantly amazed by the soft romantic ambience as we walked upstairs to the restaurant. We were greeted warmly by the wait staff who immediately cleared a table by the window. I love great service and this instantly won them brownie points with me. After a moment to ponder the menu we decided on the muscles (in tomato and white wine sauce) for entree after our waiter sold us on it. It was amazing and I instantly wished we had more. Waiter gave us extra bread to mop up the remaining sauce. We selected other items from the specials menu for mains but it was equally delicious. Overall we had a fantastic fine dining experience at this restaurant and would not hesitate coming here again. In fact the next night we went in just for dessert as we weren't overly enthused by the desert menu at the previous restaurant we were at.

I highly recommend this place to anyone in or going to Apollo Bay :)

This was my first try at having African cuisine and so I went in with an open mind. This place was highly recommended to me by server all friends and colleagues and I can confidently say that it certainly deserves the high praises I have heard people sing of it.

Dining at this restaurant is an experience as soon as you walk in. I was with group of work colleagues and we decided on ordering the platters of food which consisted of the traditional Ethiopian bread and a selection of delicious meat curries and condiments from the menu. We were served a calming and fragrant tea - similar to chai - while we waited for our food.

We ate the food with our hands using the bread to scoop up the African cuisine before us - it was simply delicious and packed full of flavours and spices. If your a fan of spicy food you will love it!

We were treated to a traditional coffee ceremony where they roast coffee beans. The coffee aroma mixed with the buring insence drifted throughout the cafe and was very relaxing. We were served some Ethiopian espresso at the end of our meal and it was a great way to finish it off.

Will definitely come back here again for sure!

i was excited when i found out that the owner of the property i rent decided to switch to a different real estate / property management company.

I've lived in the property for a couple of years and unfortunately don't remember having had any good experiences with their service. When i first moved in they the property was not clean (the bathroom still had soap scum, as did the kitchen sink, the oven was sticky, the grill had remnants of what looked like a cheese toastie, the blinds were dusty and the list did not stop there). I was honest on my inspection sheet and raised all these issues. When i questioned if the place had been professionally cleaned they advised that it had and that given the age of the property i shouldn't expect that everything would be squeaky clean and brand new (one would expect a professional cleaning company to put a little elbow grease to clean soap scum and mould). They arranged for the cleaners to come again before i officially moved in but they never showed up - instead i found a business card in the door saying that no one was home and they couldn't get in - No one at Pennisi arranged entry for them.I told the property manager that when i eventually move out, it was my obligation to leave the property in the same condition as i found it - i certainly didn't want to leave it dirty! I figured if you want a job done right, do it yourself so i cleaned it myself.

I went through the inspection sheet with a fine tooth comb (usually i wouldn't be so thorough but given the initial bad experience i was not going to take any chances). There were so many incorrect observations on that sheet. Fly screens on the windows were not in perfect condition, some of them were broken, the doorbell did not work, there were scuff marks on the wall - i noted this and they said that they will be fixed, to this day they have not (hopefully the new property managers will get onto this pronto).

Another frustrating experience i had was with the master bedroom door which had lock on the doorknob. Given that it was on the knob, it also required a key to unlock it from the outside the room. I asked where this key was when i first moved in and Pennisi did not have it - instead they advised to put tape over the push-in lock to prevent us from locking it, how ridiculous. As Murphys Law would have it the door was accidentally locked and when i called about it, the property manager was nothing but rude and treated me as if i was an irresponsible child. "How could this possibly happen? Did you put the tape over the lock like i told you? This is just riduclous" Needless to say i gave them a piece of my mind. If you've lost a key to the door - replace the lock!

Also their so called 24 hour number is pointless - you get transferred to a call centre who just take a message and advise that we will be called back within one business day. Seriously what is the point!

My partner and i are now in the market to buy a house and stay well clear away any listings by Pennisi.

In a word AMAZING! The cupcakes at Paulos are simply a work of art - i almost feel bad eating them but sometimes its good to be naughty! The cupcakes are always moist and together with a latte, its just heaven (despite the location... i agree with the previous review, the location does suck given the lack of parking but don't let this deter you!)

My fave is their red velvet :)

This review is for The Plough Hotel, Footscray VIC

After recently undergoing some recent renovations, the Plough is quite the classy establishment. The decor is simple yet chic and does not feel as if you are dining in Footscray when you are there. The service is very attentive and friendly too.

The food is good but nothing i would rave about unfortunately. I felt the prices i paid were way too expensive for the meals. I was excited about the chilli and lime calamari ($23) and decided to go the main size assuming that given that it was a mains serve it would come with a side salad and perhaps maybe even chips. The staff advised that it didn't so i asked to include a side salad - i got iceberg lettuce sprinkled with a bit of parmesan, and an olive oil dressing with lemon rind... It was $12 on the menu... really for iceberg lettuce!

A friend of mine decided to get the chicken parma - a classic pub meal but not for $25... i thought that was pricey for a parma but at least the serving was generous (i stole a few chips off them - they were nice and crunchy).

Despite my issues with the overpricing i did like the calamari (not the side salad as much) and my mates enjoyed their meals as well. It wouldn't be the first place i'd choose to go but i would go back there to give it another go.

This cafe really is one of Torquays hidden gems. Tucked away within the Surf shops between Oakley and Rip Curl, it offers a nice little relaxing place to take a load off when shopping.

My partner and i were greeted warmly by the staff and asked to take a seat anywhere as they do table service (There is just something special about a cafe that will come to you to place your order as oppose to going up to the counter). We had a nice little chat with a staff member before ordering our coffees. The coffee here is seriously the best that i've had in Torquay - really delicious.

They have a great menu with gourmet cafe style meals. After settling down we decided to order and i was torn between the pork belly and the open grilled chicken sandwich. Being mindful of my expanding waistline i decided to go with the latter and enjoyed it very much. It was served with a side of chips / chunky steak fries and they weren't bad... but nothing to rave about unfortunately. They had that unusual taste as if perhaps the oil they were cooked them with was not fresh (or they had been double fried after going cold). But this one small thing wont deter me from visiting again. Next time i'll get the pork belly... will just need to book in a hard PT session at my gym :)

This review is for Cafeteria Luis - Boulangerie Patisserie, Moonee Ponds VIC

I've been here a few times over the past 12 months and have always enjoyed the food. Last time i was here i thoroughly enjoyed the french toast. It was a generous serve, garnished with fresh strawberries, delicious salty crispy bacon and dusted with icing sugar. It came with maple syrup on the side as well as a side serve of cream cheese and the best strawberry jam that i have tasted. I washed it down with watermelon and mint juice which probably isn't the right drink to have with such a sweet dish but the juice was lovely nonetheless.

I couldnt help but feel that the atmosphere in the cafe has somewhat declined over the past 6 months which is a shame and i'm hoping that this will improve and get back to the cute boutique french patisserie it once was.

A lovely and quaint cafe offering a delicious selection of breakfast/brunch/lunch meals and great coffee. It has a great vibe about it with friendly staff and relaxing cafe environment. This is a place i would recommend and often take friends, colleagues and clients out for coffee (and cake if you're feeling bit naughty or in need of a sugar hit - they have an amazing selection).

Be sure to check out the back seating area - my fave area to dine - a bit of a hidden gem.

The food is simply delicious suiting all tastes (i recommend the beer batter holumi or something as simple as the Tuna melt is delish!)

Approximate cost: $10 - 15
